  • In this video, we fit a larger front sprocket to the Meteor 350, for more top-end. We've already fitted a DNA air filter. This combination should give us good performance and a higher top speed. Let's find out...

    Some time ago, I put a one tooth larger front sprocket on a Honda Rebel 250 with the intent of making the engine run at lower revs at 55-60 MPH. I was happy with the result. I didn't notice any gain in top end, but that's not what I was after. Since you seem to have noticed a similar effect with the Meteor, I'm seriously considering a switch for my bike. Thanks for the video!

    Good vid
    At least you were careful cracking the sprocket nut .
    Saw one guys post with a chrome classic saying put it in gear and a bar throught the spokes onto the swinging arm
    It made me wince to say the least.
    How to knacker your wheels pronto.
    Will I change mine?
    Don't know.
    DNA filter? yes.
    Cat replacement pipe? yes
    Then I'll decide as for me they make the biggest difference
    But thanks for the over view of this little job .
    Saves others running into hiccups as you would have found them first😊.

    So higher top end at the cost of lower acceleration and throttle response, also any improvement on the air filter side will be negated by the sprocket switch, seems counterintuitive for 3-4 mph

      I Totally agree with that as I know for a fact that during the first stage testing of the platform that it was running round capable of 90mph top speeds. so they know how to set an ecu up for that speed . which would give us an awesome touring capability being able to hold motorway speeds, with enough in reserve for any overtaking we would have to do.@@MotorcycleFettlers

      Top speed was 77mph (on the clock). Defintely worth doing if you want a little more from your Meteor and it's great fun doing it. The air filter is simple to change. You need to be a little more mechanically-minded if you want to change the sprocket and you needs some tools, including a torque wrench. For the sprocket, a second pair of hands is helpful.

      Yes, We've done the first test rideout. Excellent performance from this upgrade, when combined with the DNA air filter. She now tops out at 77MPH.

    Have you done research on how to get more linear torque, as meteor has smaller wheel the gear ratios are lower resulting faster acceleration compare to classic 350 which has same engine but bigger wheel, meteor setup is not a true characterstics. Of cruiser. I want the tune or setup jus like classic 350 on meteor - any ideas thoughts please

    • @MotorcycleFettlers
      @MotorcycleFettlers  Před rokem

      I found that the mods I have made have increased the cruiser feel. When the DNA filter was fitted the bike seemed a lot more revvy and 1st and 2nd gears were very short, as in that you had to change very quickly, so I changed the sprocket and this gave a much more relax feel to the bike but I lost what little power I had at the top end. It wouldn't pull the top speed unless I was going down a slight slope. When I changed the tail pipe for a less restrictive one, the bike became lively again and will now pull a lot better and will pull on an upwards slope. The top speed has increased but not by much. It's only an extra 5 mph but it will cruise down a motorway at 65/70.

    sadly, a bigger sprocket won't allow you to exceed a certain speed coz there's a built in electronic limiter in the engine. personally, i'm ok with 70 mph.

    • @MotorcycleFettlers
      @MotorcycleFettlers  Před rokem +1

      I believe it's rev-limited, so it does make a difference; especially with the DNA air filter. I'm more than ok with 70mph on something like this, but it's nice to have a little extra when you need it. It's surprising how many very low-mileage Metors are for sale, which a dealer told me is because a lot of people think that these just don't quite have enough go.

    • @philelliott5327
      @philelliott5327 Před rokem +3

      It has an engine RPM limit plus a speed limit set by the ABS ring pulse signal. Until someone brings out the bypass for that no amount of sprocket fiddling is going to give it more top end speed. I imagine RE know how to switch the limiter off but are holding back for later generations of this bike.

    • @MotorcycleFettlers
      @MotorcycleFettlers  Před rokem

      There's seems to be some discussions on whether or not it has a rev limiter, a speed limiter, or both, and how this may vary between countries. Hitchock's Motorcycles have said that it is not a speed limiter, when we asked. What I can say for sure is that, with the smaller front sprocket, it does record a higher top speed on the speedo.

    • @OddSpanner
      @OddSpanner Před rokem +1

      @@MotorcycleFettlers If you watch the video Hitchcocks put out they do say there is both a rev limiter and a speed limiter and they are separate. I'm intrigued by you claiming that it has made a difference to top speed as the 3 I've done this to have not made any difference to top end, but have reduced the revs to a very comfortable pace at cruise.

    • @MotorcycleFettlers
      @MotorcycleFettlers  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the comment. I shall have a look for the Hitchcock's video. That would be at odds with what I was told. The top speed difference that I have observed is not huge. I can only go by what I've observed whilst riding, and this may be subjective and condition dependent, but my overall impression is that these changes have made a useful and meaningful difference.

  • @grahamtodd2335

    Never ever going to get higher top speed just with gearing alterations. The bikes are not rev limited !!! They are speed limited with the readings being taken from the ABS sensors. And even the removal of the sensors simply puts the engine into limp mode . Until someone starts selling replacement ECU units with the speed control function removed there is no way to get this engine to do what we all know it should.

    • @MotorcycleFettlers
      @MotorcycleFettlers  Před 11 měsíci

      We hear so many conflicting and strong opinions on rev limited vs. ABS sensor vs. both. Whether the top-speed is higher, lower, or the same, it was never going to become a fast bike. With the sproket, DNA Air Filter, and exhuast, I'm much happy with the overal performance.

    • @grahamtodd2335
      @grahamtodd2335 Před 11 měsíci +1

      Oh yes those mods have made a big difference to my Meteor Too. I have just purchased an uprated camshaft from Hitchcocks I'll let you know what I think in due course. I don't particularly Want a speed machine but would like it if I could sustain long milages at a lower R.P.M. Apparently the new cam enables a smaller rear sprocket to be fitted ,although I guess that would reduce acceleration in lower gears, but with torque coming in lower down the rev range. I'll have to experiment and see what is most comfortable for touring and everyday use.@@MotorcycleFettlers

    Unfortunately a larger sprocket is a waste of time and money. The engine doesn’t produce enough torque to adequately pull the taller gearing. All that will be achieved is to load up the big end bearing.
