How to throw REALLY far | Disc Golf Basics

  • Hey guys! 😀
    I´ve been wanting to make this video for a while now. As a disc golf beginner there´s just something about throwing the disc far. Or wanting to throw the disc far I should say. In the video I´m trying my best to do just that - with the help of Tomas Ekström. If you have any other tips then let me know in the comments.
    A tip:
    I think it´s a good idea to watch some of the other videos in the "Disc Golf Basic" series prior or in combination with this video.
    Like Throw better with this run-up:
    • Throw BETTER with this...
    And Throw really straight:
    • Throw REALLY straight ...
    Then you´ll get a better picture of what it takes to throw further as we didn´t go into those steps in great detail in this video (so it wouldnt be a 2 hour epos).
    I hope you like this one and if you have any other suggestions on what you´d want to see or learn more about then please let me know 😀🤘

    Finally someone espousing the anhyzer. I tell all beginners to throw enough anny to get an S and resist the immediate fade. 97% of them say “THAT’S TOO HARD” and then proceed to throw the same 175 foot noob hyzer over and over

    • @kejerith
      @kejerith Před 3 lety

      Well, this isnt the type of shot beginners should get into the muscle memory early, this is much more technical and wont give you the precision you would need on tight courses. BUT... Im fairly good at throwing far, my regular distance is 420ft/130meters and my max is now 544ft/166meters, and i see alot of people complaining about why they cant throw further, but they still keep to their straight shots with a destroyer or something high speed, and it keeps fading like it should on a straight shot and ends up around 350-370ft.
      If you see Simon, Eagle, Drew, GG or any of the furthest throwers, they always throw with a big S curve with a starting anhyzer angle to push out the most distance. So for the beginners out there, if you want to increase distance, start experimenting with a anhyzer release on your drives.

    • @dr05guitar
      @dr05guitar Před 3 lety

      @@kejerith Or another option is learn to hyzer flip, you can mash something understable on a hyzer, get a flip up and ride right for a while, and get a lot of distance, although depending on disc stability/how much hyzer used/speed you throw with, your mileage may vary... for me I feel like I can smash on a hyzer angle more than an anhyzer. But maybe in time I can feel more confident and consistent with the anny release.

    First of all, you guys are fuckin hilarious. Second, I would kill for private lessons from a pro. When I was young (19 or 20) I played disc golf everyday for like 2 years. Life happened and I stopped playing. Now I'm 37 and I'm picking it back up again. I realize even after all this time I'm locked into many bad habits. Back then a rip for me was 270-300. I also was aware I was doing something wrong I just didn't know what. I had a flip phone in my pocket so it wasn't like I could check the internet 🤣 Anyways I guess I just wanted to thank you guys. After my first two practice sessions I'm already consistently throwing it 290. I'm trying not to think to much during the throw. Changing little things step by step. Way harder than it sounds. Anyways, I could ramble about disc golf all day. Thanks again guys. 👍👊💪

      Yes times ten. Been playing five years now at social level. Ah, but not arguing with you just throwing out there the value of some distance that it took me a while to develop. All those bird-eligible holes that are 270 to 350. My circle 1 putt is third throw. I enjoyed this vid thinking, hoping to practice ideas to get into the distance. I am still a noodle arm to would enjoy being on tee pad at a 350 hole and have a chance that second shot is a circle 1 putt. Again, not arguing with you. Putting is only thing I practice off the course. I do work on drives and approaches but while playing. Improvement in putting over the last couple years, to your point, has gotten be to be that social player that can regular shoot a 52 to 54.

    • @Derek_1111
      @Derek_1111 Před 3 lety +1

      You are supposed to hyzer flip using a hyzer angle. That's why they call it a hyzer flip (it flips from hyzer to flat). You just have to use an under stable disc for it. If you use a stable to over stable disc then the disc won't flip to flat as well and if it does flip to flat it won't hold that line long before fading. An under stable disc will flip to flat and fly nice a straight for quite some distance before fading a bit at the end.

    • @akselim7403

    Wow that’s a major difference in your distance!! Thanks for your videos, I am a beginner. Never grew up playing frisbee even. I was a quarterback and a pitcher all my life and I get so frustrated with disc golf so far because it’s wayyy harder to control where I want the disc to end up then baseball and football haha.

    Best thing said in this video was Beginners should focus on consistency. Timing is one of the most important parts of generating the velocity to throw far. If your form is different every time you will never learn the timing to syncronize your upper and lower body and generate real velocity.

    Tomaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas where is all that hair? hahahaha Looking good bro! And as a former european master champion I can tell you that distance was the weakest part of my game but I did won that tour 3 times. And that was all due to accuracy. Having a decent putt also helps but parking, more or less, every shot from 300 feet out wherever you are or whatever type of shot...that is key. And you can ask Tomas, I am not a big guy but throwing in between 300-400 feet was enough for my game. I also have a mean roller lol
    So work on accuracy I would say :-)

    See how much better the throw got when he was given the tip to run sideways towards the shot. The over-emphasis on reachback has people running backwards and putting the disc right behind them and rounding, and it really sets a lot of people back for no reason. The "reachback" is just a byproduct of turning your hips and shoulders nothing more. The same goes for the head. You don't turn it 180˚ backwards, it just turns whatever amount is necessary to allow your shoulders to turn. Unless you are the creature from the excorcist or an owl it is impossible to look forward while turning your shoulders backward.
    For me it really clicked when I just started trusting my body to throw an object from a backhand position, putting the disc firmly in my hand pushing it down with my thumb (with most pressure between middle/ring fingers and thumb) and making sure that the disc passes my right pec during he throw. And I look at the line for as long as possible before my head is turned away by my body. *Do not* pre-turn your head and/or body to start the "reachback". That's like throwing a ball and keeping your arm straight out behind you for several steps before you throw. The rest just works itself out.

    The “going fast” thing is very eye opening. That explains why the disc doesn’t go far when you muscle up because you’re taking away your momentum

    I liked the concept of this video. Explanations tended to get more technical than a beginner can easily understand, should maybe break this into a few videos: disc selection and physics, footwork (standstill, one step, x-step), launch angles and grip, etc. Also, couldn't really see the discs in flight. :(
    Congratulations on adding 80' to your drives, that's amazing! Good job!

    • @Latitude64
      @Latitude64  Před 3 lety

      Thank you for your feedback, John. I initially thought about adding more of that within this video (Tomas did mention it as well). My thought was to not do a stand alone video as it´s within the "basic" series. But we maybe should have added some of it in this video as well :). And thank you! /Jonathan

  • @jeremyhagen7684

    There needs to be a video for disc golf video creators that shows techniques to zoom in on the disc flying so you can see it after it’s released. 👍🏻

    • @Latitude64
      @Latitude64  Před 3 lety

      I totally agree....And here comes the accused 😂. The place where we shot the videos are perfect...it´s not ideal for shooting video as the tee pad is usually in the shade and the field is in the sun/light. So as soon as the disc is released it goes in the light and exposing the shot gets really tricky. Dosn´t really matter how much zoom we use. But this bugs me every time I edit for sure. /Jonathan
