  • This is a simple move that many people play but I refined it with Barry Harris, especially the descending part. It's useful in so many places. In this lesson, we will learn what it is, how to find it and examples on an intro and on 2 tunes.

    0:14 - that move there is insane. It would interesting if you just posted a video of you simply playing your own arrangement of some tune; you could pull out your entire bag of tricks. I learn so much just by watching the intros to your videos haha.

    Having retired from 54 years drumming, I've been learning piano by ear since last year (I can pick up chords and melody lines by ear quite easily as I also played guitar) and of all the online tutorials I've encountered, I must say I've learnt more in a week from yours than any others.

    Hi Shan! I"m in my second year of piano study after a career as a drummer. It was Barry Harris who came up when I did my first youtube search for piano lessons.. So...I set to...learning the secrets of the 6th. Then I found Oliver Prehn, Adam Maness, etc etc and I'm getting better. Every teacher has something different to show me. I welcome your videos and am glad I found you.

    Fantastic - this kind of movement is exactly what I’ve felt has been lacking in my playing. It really feels like a lot of this stuff has become over complicated when taught in universities and in that sense you’ve put across Dr Harris’ work in the spirit with which I believe it was conceived . Many thanks !

      Yep and it’s the main reason why I can’t get with this method. It’s too pedantic, cerebral and complex! This method seems to thought out and the lines sound to rehearsed!
      Jazz and music in general should be EASY to understand and not so complex that you have to think through EVERY MOVE, chord change, progression or modulation!
      Unfortunately just about every pianist I see playing this style, seems to caught up in theory to make effective meaningful improvisation’s. I honestly believe that the only people who will progress with this method are the jazz pianists that are ALREADY super advanced and to that end really don’t need a method. Last but not least, you have to find your own way. Currently I’m working on a system that seeks to address this and it’s simple and can be started from beginner to advanced!

      @@mrquick6775 I find his approach very revealing and much easier to understand than most jazz theory teachers. But why do you assume it should be easy to understand? It's complex music. Understanding it requires development of your ears and theory.

    Very nice video again, have been following your channel for quite a while.. I am just curious, where would I get such a nice backing track that you jam on in the beginning of the video?

    • @michael-solomon
      @michael-solomon Před 2 lety

      If you buy the Ireal pro app, you have the chords for basically every jazz standard at your disposal. The charts also serve as backing tracks. I'm not sure if this is what Sean is using, but it's an option. Also you could probably look up on CZcams whatever tune and then backing track. Works like a charm 🙂
