IMPORTANT NOTE:
My equating frequency with volume was WRONG.They are separate things. The tutorial works great but my terminology was wrong.

To get the "gray boxes", click the tiny arrow at the top left corner of the audio track mixer (if you hover above it it will say "Show/Hides Effects and Sends"). By double clicking you can edit the effect like in effect controls.
Thanks Ben! Also make sure you're in the audio TRACK mixer and not the audio CLIP mixer (which I was lol)
thanks man you saved my day! Now i can continue :D
Thanks a lot , I can continue finally
Thanks i was going mad 😃
Thank you so much! Couldn't figure this out
You have no idea how much time this saved me. I was manually trying to level out each track for a documentary-style voice-over but realised it was taking me far too long. That's when I decided to look up ways to make this process quicker and easier. Thank you so much for sharing this. You're a total day saver!
Also if you have several audio clips on different audio tracks (let's say A1 and A2), you can create an audio submix track (in Sequence -> Add Tracks).
Then from the audio track mixer you can redirect A1 and A2 to your submix (click on "Master" above the circles of A1 and A2 and select "submix 1") and be able to use the multiband compressor on it so that it affects all the tracks at once and not separately.
Explain How in the audio track mixer
I love u. Thank u so much
I haven't freaked out this much from seeing a tutorial since discovering Warp Stabilizer! OMG I wish I would've known about this years ago! This tutorial just saved my life
screen shots that are crisp and easy to read, a cool host thats clear and to the point while still having a bit of fun. This is a truly awesome helpful video. you rock.
I have a 45 minute live presentation where the speaker was all over the place. I had a lavalier on her so I had a good signal, but smoothing out the volumes was going to be a keyframe frenzy just like you said in the beginning. This technique will save me probably 2 hours today!!! Thanks again for another greta tutorial, Josh.
This is 3 years later, but this is the best/quickest video on this topic. I've seen others, and they go too deep into things the average person doesn't need to know (It's great that they exist for those wanting to learn more). Often we just need a quick answer so we can keep editing. Well done sir!
Wow. You have probably added days to my life now that I won't be wasting so much time tinkering with each track. THANK YOU!
yes!!! game changer! I knew there had to be a better way than slicing up my audio tracks and adjusting gain. Thank you!!!
5 years later and this tutorial is still so helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for this. Been looking at so many other videos before this and I couldn't find any that were good, especially for someone like me who is just starting out. This helps so much because of the simplicity and you're videos are great. Thanks again!
Dude. You just saved my life. Working on my first TV show and I have no idea what I'm doing. This is exactly what I needed. Liked, subbed all that. Gonna binge watch the rest of your videos too. Thank you!
Used this for the first time today. Such a big time saver and it does a better job than I can anyway.
This tutorial saved my podcast ...... thank you so much
i´ve watched several tutorials but this gets straight to the point. Just loved that you said about the increasing the audio gain. Helped alot. Thanks dude!
With how you use the tool, you could achieve the same thing with a regular compressor actually. compressors limit peaks and bring up quieter parts making the entire waveform less dynamic. so it doesnt fluctuate in volume and stays audible and in your face.
The multiband compressor does that, but on separate frequencies. Multiple bands of frequencies. let's say your bass is overpowering and your sharper sounds like "S " and "T" are too quiet. You can compress/gain individual frequency bands to balance it out.
Even though this was an old video, it was INCREDIBLY helpful. I'm super new to Premiere Pro, and even newer to using voice audio in my productions. Thank you.
Such an important tool I was missing in my journey with this THING
wow, I've finally found a tutorial I've been looking for since many years. GREEAT!
I am so glad I found your channel. Awesome tutorial and very easy to implement. Until now I have always been using an external software to deal with the audio because I was better used to.
For CS6 users, you can also take the entire project and lay it into another timeline, then apply the Multiband Compressor effect to the audio track - OR you can simply nest your vocal tracks into one and do the same. Note that you generally cannot nest audio only, but you can always nest whatever and bring in audio via copy-paste.
Also, for more advanced workflows, here are some tips from how I work.
Bring all your audio clips into one sequence - Audio Cutter. Track 1. You can color code them at this point.
Select all, alt-drag up to the next track. Mute track 1. Now you can slice and dice and remove the junk working semi-destructively on Track 2.
Premiere doesn't have a quick and dirty way to ripple remove the spaces between the clips that I know of, so when I have only "good takes" on Track 2, I will duplicate the sequence, rename the new one to Audio BUS.
Now select all clips on Track 2. Drag down to track 1. Drag back up to track 2. Now you have used Track 2 to punch holes like a cookie cutter in the contiguous tracks on Track 1. All content on Track 1 matches exactly the spaces between the good content on Track 2. Select all the content on Track 1 and right-click, Ripple Delete.
This will remove all the spaces and leave you with a nice clean audio track.
Now you can bring all of that into the Main working sequence. Match the end of the audio tracks to the end of the video clips and start organizing from the beginning.
Obviously, this only applies if it is voiceover - you'll need to keep your audio-sync'd tracks in line, but this can also give you the primary structure for a mixed voiceover/on-camera vocal track project.
And come on Josh -
Audio-Technica ATR3350
It's less than 30 bucks... Buy it. Shove a battery in it. Turn down the H1n input level so you don't get clipping. Breathe easy...
thank you so much for this!!!! literally was using multiband compressor but didn't know about the margin setting, that made the audio in my edit so much better :D
Thank you so much! It helps me a lot! You are awesome and keep up your good work!
LEGEND. THANK YOU.
This was an amazing tutorial, thank you so much!
It totally sped up my editing process, SO HELPFUL!
I hate it sooo much! We all do these audio corrections/edits but most people don't even notice... But like classic car restoration, the right person will notice and that's why I do it. Great video!
Maybe the best audio tip ever!
Your name is Josh. Nice tutorial!
You are the man. Thanks so much for this simple telling of this technique. I want to learn more about tweaking the audio for my dialogue, but this brings me light years forward from where I was. Thanks!
Waiting for this tutorial for a long time. Finally is here. Thank's man
Lifeszu been meaning to make it for a while man! Look out for vids a lot more often now
Thank you for your content... Have a nice day.. From Italy
Absolutely loved that u shout out some of your favourite artists at the start
Dude, so good. So well explained and absolutely solves peaking and levels dialogue ooohft legend!
One of the best tutorials I've seen for Premiere. Subscribed.
I wish I found this video so much sooner in my life!!! Thank you!!!
You literally just saved my channel, thanks
You my friend...are the KING....
this video was an INSANE help. thank you so much!
thanks for the video MY GUY! the biggest issue for my gaming videos was in consistent audio!
Thanks for sharing this. You can actually just throw the Multiband Compressor effect on the audio track and then press edit in Effect Controls to open the Clip FX Editor faster and skip some steps.
one of the most useful tutorials ive seen recently! thank you so much
OMG. I should've looked for this loooong time ago! Thanks alot man!
You are an incredible person. Thank you.
Great video Josh! I've been struggling with this so I really appreciate your help!
This is brilliant. I wonder if its even more streamlined 4 years later (today). Either way,..THANK YOU!
I did this and it won't let me lower my margin to anything lower than -5, any idea why?
Josh- you are amazing and you have saved my life! Thank you for your videos- I'm a subscriber now!
i don't have the option to add an effect in volume mixer, could you help me please? thanks!
there is a tiny tiny sideways arrow on the upper left corner of the audio track mixer tab. Click it to expand and you will get the grey bars where you can add effects. It's not visible in his screen recording because the left part of the screen is slightly cut off.
@@greentokyo Thanks bro!
You sir are a life saver!
I'm trying to apply this multiband compressor to all the audio on A1 and for some clips its not working? Audio on some clips sounds have the desired effect and other audio clips are not being affected by the filter. Does anyone know why?
Josh, you are my hero.
You saved me so much time! Thank you!
WOW!!! You just dropped hundreds of dollars worth of knowledge! Thanks!
Thanks for this simple and very practical effect that can be used on any type of video. Do more universal tutorials like this one!
HOLY SHIT THANK YOU! audio levels have been my biggest issue in my videos and this will help SOOOOO much you lovely lovely man. liked subscribe, unsebscribed, AND SUBSCRIBED AGAIN
TOTALLY feel you on that. Audio leveling were my least favorite part of the post process. This is just the basics but still makes up probably 95% of my mixing process for most videos
Thanks so much, very well explained!
Thanks so much, man!!! Been lookin for this for ages :)
olufemi for president!!!!
MAN YOU ARE AMAZING
I LOVE YOU
I needed this tutorial so badly, thank you!
So helpful! Thank you!
Austin Newman thanks for watching Austin!
Omg thank you so much. I am a female video editor and Cinematographer . This is awesome
Thanks bro!! Audio is the hardest part of my videos
Oh boy, did I need this 2 weeks ago... Did my largest project ever with almost only interview material that unfortunately had audio from a single lav, regardless of the number of people in the shot.. Had to do a lot of cutting and gain adjusting...
Just did exactly what u said to do on a 30 track feature film. Followed it to a tee. Played audio sounds distorted. Any help will be appreciated. without it doesnt sound bad. Though I need to balance it all out. thx
Hey. Thanks for the video. You really, really helped me out and you did a fantastic way of explaining it without making it boring. Thumbs up and I'll be looking forward to more from your channel.
Hey thanks man!!! That was super helpful!!!! Saved me a ton of time and headache!
5:33 gave me a heart attack. Home alone and thought someone was talking behind me lol
Thats what I thought
Man, you need to do the "Fill Right With Left" first :D
To make your audio in mono? Doesn't make sense
@@slykhajiit2 he's speaking into a stereo mic so his voice is panning wildly from left to right. It shouldn't. Voice over should be mono for this.
@@ActiumFilms Resorting to mono audio is typically only advisable when you're technology- or site-limited. I.e., when you don't have a good enough setup to have a decent audio recording. Stereo recordings are generally of higher quality since they have more depth, interest, and "thickness" to them. Mono does have applications though, don't get me wrong.
@@slykhajiit2 for vocals though? I don't think so
so should you fill right with left?
Hi, I have an issue with Premiere Pro cc 2017: I record my music in a high quality sound format WAV. However, when I import them to Premiere Pro CC, the quality of the sounds decrease considerably. I’ve tried changing the gain, using all the effects as possible are in Premiere Pro cc but my original still sounds absolutely better that the one imported to PPro cc. Do you know what I am missing, what I should have to do? Guys Help please :(
why is the margin only 5? can i break that limit to like 12
This is why I'm here in 2023. The tutorial is straight to the point regardless.
Thank you so much ...been using Premiere pro a while, didnt know you could apply effects to a whole track. Thought only possible in Vegas
Ooooh this is amazing, I'm gonna try it right now. Thanks.
Dude...I had no clue about this. So helpful. Thank you.
This is incredible! Much appreciated! Liked and subbed!
THIS IS SO USEFUL! Thanks so much for sharing this! Also Good name!
You freaking rock man.
This the most useful tutorial for me
I will struggle with this
Thank so much
Josh! You are a game changer!!!
ok thats the biggest THANK YOU ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Immensely helpful. Thank you so much!
I do a weekly collaboration video and my contributors always have different audio levels that I have to fix! this will help a ton!
Great video man!! Those audio keyframes took sooooo long. This will save me a ton of time :-)
The problem I have using this effect is, we record two lavs on separate channels in our zoom h1, which will still pick up each other’s voices. The compressor picks up the quiet other persons voice and cranks it up. The only way I can figure to get rid of this is to cut out the other persons audio manually in adobe premiere, which is very time consuming. Larry
When I add the effect Microband Compressor, it looks completely different than yours. Can I get some help with this?
This was great! What if I now have two audio tracks that have this effect. There are points where together they reach higher than my margin. Is there an overall effect I can add on output to correct and keep it at -3?
thought you wree gonna do some eq but this is cool, thanks a lot!
after this no more dots on my audio clips, big thanks man!!
you earned a sub background music is on point keep it up
Another question regarding sound.
So when i have multiple layers and they are fine levels individually. But then when they are put together they increase the volume and peak and sound distorted?
I don't think either of the sounds are too loud, but it's only when mixed i have to comprimise by lowering them all of sacrifice certain sound effects.
How do you manage that?
Thank you so much! also what should i do if theres a lot of noise? My clip has a lot of background noise and stuff
This is superb. Thank you.
Bruhhhh!!!(,: thank you so much. You're a legend, love your style. Been a fan since almost day one 🔥🙏🏼 definitely have to meet up soon🙏🏼
yaaaaas this worked perfectly for a quick edit
Whats ur name again?
Hehe great flippin video man ⚡
Thank you. This was very helpful as I am a new CZcamsr.
Thank you for making and sharing this video. It was helpful.
Kick ass tutorial! Really Really Really good! Thanks so much!
Great video, thank you very much!!!👍👍👍
Why is your zoom h1 sounding so clean? If I try recording like this it’s just not that clean
