    I’ve found the sound I like on my violin is somewhere 1/3 from fingerboard, 2/3 from bridge. That’s a nice mellow, warm jazz singing kind of voice for me

    Nice video, I struggle with tone, it seems it's only nice after new strings, now 4 months later I have to work hard for the same mellow tone. I play every day for 1 or 2 hours. Love your videos!

    It does vary depending on the violin. One of my violins requires me to play closer to the bridge, to get a good tone. The other one is fine in the middle. I've seen some people play more toward the fingerboard and it sounds fine. Maybe that works with a really bright or tight violin?

      Certainly all violins have different personalities in that respect when it comes to how we play them :)

    I try to achieve a mellower tone by playing closer to the fingerboard, however, my bow ends up playing closer to the bridge - very frustrating!

      @@bernhardnizynski4403 im quite new to the violin, is it supposed to be played near the bridge? If i play near the bridge, the sound doesn't feel quite right or should I say, scratchy?

      @@Faz_u - I believe between he bridge and end of fretboard. It appears that folkies play more towards the fingerboard, and Classicals closer to the bridge - it is a bit louder?

    Wow, I thought the higher the instrument the harder it is to get a good sound. But, it seems like its the other, which makes lots of sense. I fee like I have an awkward situation when it comes to tone. As I play on the E string and higher, I'm getting a tone I'm satisfied with whether I vibrato or not. As I play on the other strings and go towards a higher position it sounds whiney and get worse with vibrato.

  • @chriswalker3187
    @chriswalker3187 Před 6 měsíci

    I'm about 1.5 years into playing, I haven't tried to develop vibrato yet where I find problematic on getting the instrument to speak is notes higher than A in 7th position on the G string. I have a quality Guerneri built by Christopher Jacoby and the rest of my set up is on that level. I've tried different sounding points, bow speeds, tilt and weight/pressure no combination of those variables has worked yet. I'm not sure what I'm missing?

    • @erictheviolinist
      @erictheviolinist  Před 6 měsíci +1

      That’s where an in-person teacher would help a lot 😞

    • @chriswalker3187
      @chriswalker3187 Před 6 měsíci

      @erictheviolinist I've tried a few more things changing the way I approach initate the start of the note. It seems with a more aggressive deliberate attack it gets the string moving better. Now it's seems to be about getting used to maintaining that heavy armwieght through any desired note duration and being able to do this at all dynamic ranges. Although getting the shapes and colors the way I want them may not come until I can develop a vibrato 🤔
