Many Maiden fans claimed this album one of their worst... we're lucky because if bad albums are like this one, i can't imagine how good could be the best ones!
It's not bad, it's different! To me me that's a good thing and all iron maiden records are different. They each have their own thing that makes them special and that's what i find so great about them!
"Why can't we treat our fellow man with more respect and a shake of their hand? But anger and loathing is rife. The death on all sides has become a way of life."
Bruce Dickinson really out did himself on that one by raphsodically calling out the horrors and injustices perpretated by mankind during the war. This song is particularly breathtaking because these struggles define us as poeple and are branded in our history forever. A great, aptly named song with awsome instrumantal that fit in perfectly as usual. IRON MAIDON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lot of mainstream fans out there who claim to love Iron Maiden but only know songs like Run to the hills, Hallowed be Thy name, Trooper, or Aces High and not songs like this song.
+Placido “Bat Boy” Pax Web page called "Iron Maiden Commentary" had explanations to all of the song lyrics Iron Maiden have made. I don't know if the page is still active, but you should check it. It was very helpful and also in a great way interesting to read and understand better what is that they are singning about.
Skendrović Nikola He's ridiculously dead wrong about this song. It's clearly about WW1 and a priest who manipulated some boys into going to war. Similar in theme to "All quiet on western front". "Yellow gas" refers to mustard gas and "all dressed in black" refers to Germans having black uniforms.
The lyrics in this are amazing! When I first heard this song it was in '07 when I was 13, and since then I've always been coming back to it and the whole album. I still think it's amazing! One of their most underrated albums and this is definitely THE most underrated song!
This album could not have a better song to end. This song is a pure masterpiece combining every element an operatic super-meanningful track must have. The extraordinary composing skills of Steve(and Janic's as well) are revealed through this unique state-of-the-art song.I m glad that God gave them strengh to carry on and hopefully, give me one of the most important things in my life,Maiden.Long live and see you on the road...AGAIN!!!(Waiting for the next album of course!)
Two men met, one fears that he might find a killer. Another that he might find a one who was killed. One was wiser than another. Let us all fear war and hope for peace to us all If one is right we all just might win. If no, we all lose for sure
This Album led me to Iron Maiden and i have never turned back i am thankful to have heard this album first and going further into their library just gets better. I have this album cover on my battle jacket.
It's about WW1. He is addressing Kaiser Wilheilm the leader of Germany during the Great war. After the assination of Arch duke Franz Ferdinand of Austria Hungary and at several points after the the start of the war Germany had several opportunities to end the war/keep it from endind and chose not to.The LEGACY the song refers to is the German "stab in the back legend" which stated that the German soldiers did not lose the war but were "stabbed in the back" by the Jews,Socialists,(to be cont.)
Haunting chills flow from my back like the damnedest mine, they eat the black dust from the ground is my new friend I shall embrace it one more time, I must.
Scoobert Doobert if metal is against elitism then explain why they make a big deal about metal core and death core and bands like black vail brides and new metal bands.
Iron Maiden songs are exactly as long as they need to be.....the band never rushes into a song...every one plays out like a story....if 8 minutes is a problem for you.....you need to up your dose of ridilin stop watchin the squirrels out the window
@mia12391 Type The Making of A Matter of Life and Death into the search bar...There is a documentary on them making it, and one/two of the episodes are telling what the songs mean. The nursery rhyme is referring to WWI and mustard gas attacks.
if you wanna listen to good music just type "Iron Maiden" in youtube search and click on a random clip. you have about... 100% ceratinty to get a masterpiece of modern or classic heavy metal music(good stuff) UP THE IRONS!!!
@seraph186-I think it's one of those songs where it's left to interpretation. I do seem to remember one of the members of Maiden saying in an interview that it was about one person in particular, but he wouldn't say who. That being said, it's probably my favorite song from A Matter of Life and Death.
iron maiden is the best band ever '-'....for many aspecsts..not only because they music rules...but also cause they're not like many other bands out there....who onlu write lirics about love or some crazy shit that you cant understand nothing....they make lirics about history, religion, ans many other things that make them at lest a unique band
Many Maiden fans claimed this album one of their worst... we're lucky because if bad albums are like this one, i can't imagine how good could be the best ones!
One of my favorite albums. A lot of it has a military story to them.
It's not bad, it's different! To me me that's a good thing and all iron maiden records are different. They each have their own thing that makes them special and that's what i find so great about them!
Simone Calloni In my opinion, this is the best album they've ever done. But each to their own.
Alexander Hjelm My fav by them is Piece of Mind. But I put AMOLAD in their top 5.
Simone Calloni I've always considered this album to be one of their worst. The good songs are great, but the bad is NyQuil.

"A matter of life and death" is one of the best albums of Maiden!
imo is the best :D
Carl Carlson the album with the deepest lyrics and meaning of all.....
Carl Carlson my personal favorite definitely underrated
I love this song.... Yes, somebody can say the music is a bit strange or scared, but in my opinion is perfect for this type of music
How you can not like this song is beyond me.
A lot of mainstream fans out there who claim to love Iron Maiden but only know songs like Run to the hills, Hallowed be Thy name, Trooper, or Aces High and not songs like this song.
the lyrics made sense back in 2006, and knowing humanity will make sense in 50 years
Has seemed like Heavy Metal is always way ahead.
Try 2020
Maiden fan since 1983...overall their best album!
the intro couldn't have been more epic, the song couldn't have been more awesome, Iron Maiden couldn't have been greater band. Gods of heavy metal
Wow man, those lyrics...

That is a good site, the author seems cool.

Oh my god, this song makes all my skin tingle!
This has to be one of my favorite Iron maiden songs EVER!!!!!

these long epics that they always have on the last track of their last few albums are so underated
Two men met,
one fears that he might find a killer.
Another that he might find a one who was killed.
One was wiser than another.
Let us all fear war
and
hope for peace to us all
If one is right we all just might win.
If no, we all lose for sure

UP THE IRONS! ...From Brazil
Detta är inteligent heavy metal. Jag brukar förklara iron maidens själ med att dom spelar viktorianskt, alltså metal med något historiskt berättande. You know, if you just feel like sitting down and listening, then matter of life and death is an enjoyable listen. at least in my ears it is.
Haunting chills flow from my back
like the damnedest mine, they eat the black
dust from the ground is my new friend
I shall embrace it one more time,
I must.
so freaking awesome.. The geatest band ever!
Metal elitists make no sense. Metal is against elitism,
*that's* *kind* *of* *the* *point*
Scoobert Doobert no one gives a shit
Scoobert Doobert if metal is against elitism then explain why they make a big deal about metal core and death core and bands like black vail brides and new metal bands.
Very underrated album...quite a few great songs (this being just one) on it.
9 minutes & 23 seconds of complete awesomness ...xD
Bruce is my favorite storyteller.
one of the best beginnings ...
Planewatts, i agree. its the same in 2 minutes to midnight with 2 minutes being 4 minutes. Awesome song.
:D
I love that riff that kicks in at 6:30.
13 people are benefiting from death, pain, and despair.
Lucas Miranda Make that 14.
+lord geoffrey John Cena
FlatSkip
ha ha
4:48 BRUCE'S HIGH PARTS ARE MIND-BLOWING!!!
Iron Maiden songs are exactly as long as they need to be.....the band never rushes into a song...every one plays out like a story....if 8 minutes is a problem for you.....you need to up your dose of ridilin stop watchin the squirrels out the window
one of the best songs at least in terms of lyrics Maiden ever wrote
"Two minute of your time then on you go" - I LOVE Maiden's Idea of two minutes... (Being over 9 minutes of awesome song) :D
Irons Up From The Death Bed!
@mia12391 Type The Making of A Matter of Life and Death into the search bar...There is a documentary on them making it, and one/two of the episodes are telling what the songs mean. The nursery rhyme is referring to WWI and mustard gas attacks.

at 5:30 they took under the sun by black sabbath...both bands are the best ever..
NoNoNo This riff is the same riff used on Dance of Death, it's equal. This riff don't fit on this song, my opinion
I agree on second part!!
