Diving the wreck of Shotan Maru - Truk Lagoon

The 1,999grt Type 1D standard cargo ship Shotan Maru was built in 1943 during the war.She was 285 feet long with a beam of 40 feet and powered by a coal fired triple expansion engine.
Shotan MAru arrived at Truk Lagoon in a supply convoy on 6 February 1944 and anchored in the Fourth Fleet anchorage to the south east of Truk's main central islands.
On the second day of Task Force 58's surprise 2-day fast carrier raid, Operation HAILSTONE, she was attacked by Douglas Dauntless dive bombers from the carrier USS Enterprise - she was hit in her aft holds. Fatally damaged and ablaze with fierce fires she sank into 51 metres of water just 300 yards away from Fanamu Island.
