Couldn't agree more, that 2 months vacuum of power must've been brutal that the Indonesian government immediately made the monument in the '50s... Thanks Nick!
Woah.. you learn about the history of surabaya war and explain it really well. Not many foreigner and youtubers want to know about the historical story behind the place they visited. Props to you sir 👏
Yet another excellent, educative vlog Nick! I feel that our historical landmarks don't have enough care and enough tourist amenities to attract visitors, which is a shame. I hope that your channel gains popularity not just within Indonesia but also throughout the international audience as well. Hopefully it'll attract tourists and get the govt to start doing something as I hate to see those buildings being so "lifeless". Cheers from Surabaya!
"Pemuda" means youths or younger generations. It's not a name of an organization or anything, it's just an indonesian word for youths.
Thanks for yet another enlightening video, Nick! Last time I visited Semarang was just before Covid hit but unfortunately didn’t get a chance to stop by Lawang Sewu. Btw that CFC was actually a franchise from America called Pioneer Take out before it is now completely owned and operated fully by Indonesia. And if you happen to encounter Texas Chicken (if you haven’t already) it was actually Church’s Chicken 😅 they go by different name here.
@@NickKTravel Oh and depending where you are right now, if you’re planning to stop by Jakarta again there’s a couple of museums I’d like to take you around to that I’m sure you’d be fascinated with its history or rather.. dark/sinister history 🙈
Very interesting vlog. Usually tourists from outside Indonesia just walk around and have fun. However, your vlog is unique in that it brings back to the history of Indonesians that may have been forgotten by today's younger generation. Nick, if you're really interested in the history and beauty of architecture, i suggest you visit the presidential palace of Indonesia, one of which is the Cipanas, presidential palace in West Java 😉👍👍
"Astaga" is an expression like "Oh my gosh". Sometimes some people go beyond the limit expressing it as "astaga naga", typically for something so surprising. "Naga" is dragon by the way. Yeah, it's so random 😂
the thing that like about your vlog is that is so raw which i like it very much. Not too much editing, just a simple vlog which gives a more engaging experience
Thanks for the video Nick, so i can see Lawang Sewu from outside and inside, good job
Thank you for the wonderful tour, Nick. I went to Semarang once in mid 80s for some school trip. However, didn't know this place. Again, thank you and blessings 🙏🎉
It was a headquarter for Kodam Diponegoro back at 80s if I am not mistaken. It was used by regional Indonesian army headquarter
The man in the blue shirt sitting next to you and explaining the song "Mungkin Nanti" is Yanto Sianipar, Senior Vice President in Chevron Indonesia.
Hallo nick, maybe you can try to hear the song is “mungkin nanti” from Noah Band (one the bigest band in Indonesia), and the song also have japanese lyric with the tittle “Moshimo Mata Itsuka”, I hear you live for long time in japan, maybe you interesting about the song
Nick, if you want to visit the mountain area in Semarang, you can visit Bandungan, there you can find the famous Gedongsongo Temple (9 temple), waterfall, and the warm of the local people
One reason why i keep watching your channel because you're smart man. Not only for walking around, but also for the historical side. Keep up the good work, bro!
Nick, I really enjoy your vlogs. Please keep them coming.
Watching your vlog is a wholesome experience...you gave insight about history, the interaction with the locals which is awesome, the food experiences of your perspective, awesome scenery and places...
Love your work Nick, keep it up mate
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
great vid dude! specially u learn, research and tell us history trivia 👍🏼
Semarang is one of the most beautiful city in Indonesia..The old town and surrounding including Lawang Sewu is preserved beautifully.Something that other cities in Indonesia can learn from local Semarang government. I got an impression that Nick is more well knowledgeable than the local guide him self..I am sure that Harry the local guide is an expert guide but maybe because of the language barrier a lot of important info had not been delivered properly..but at least he tried his best.❤️🥰..Another impressive video Nick !!!!
I agree. Despite the language barrier i think the guide did a great job at explaining things. Though idk if its worth 100k 😅
yeah, he had a tough time explaining things, and i know a lot of my questions i asked him he didn't fully understand, he still tried his best
Awesome Nick ! I didnt had a chance to visit this building when i was there. Very proud of you to visit this memorial building.
trying my best to understand the english with javanese accent. i always loooved hearing people speak in english but never forget their roots! it is more challenging to decipher but that makes it so much fun to learn! i had fun watching this, nick. have fun on your indonesian trip! subscribed❤️
hello, I'm Raka's mother who held your camera when you went on stage at Lawang Sewu
your other videos are poppin off, the views are great, i hope this one too, anyway i like your videos as always, very chill, pack with information, and you're cool guy
This is an appreciation post for the guide. You did a great job translated and explained the history of Lawang Sewu pak. I've never really been there so this is a new knowledge for me☺👍
Awesome nick!!...we really appreciate what you did, finally you explored the building that became the icon of the city of Semarang. in addition to the history of the struggle of the Indonesian people, you can also learn about the history of the kingdoms that spread throughout Indonesia, the era of the kingdom in Indonesia may be almost the same as when you learned about the history of the samurai in Japan in the past. Keep it goin nick, your channel is very educational for today's young generation.
Thanks for sharing this video Nick. I never visit Lawang Sewu. Your video really Cool 👍👍❤. You read a lot about Indonesia History, very impressive 🤩🤩🤩.
Perfect time to upload Nick. Accompanying us breaking the fast 👍
In my opinion you know history better than the guide Nick, nice video as always, see you in Balikpapan
Your knowledge about the history ,so amazing👍🏼
Ghosts or no ghosts, these historical sites looked spooky enough to give goosebumps..
I’m very impressed with you, your insight into Indonesian history is very good for a foreign tourist.
Here I will give you suggestions of places and foods that you have not had time to visit in Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The two cities are close together, about 2 hours by car.
I have seen your vlog in Yogyakarta. It was very good, but if you go back there I recommend this place for you to visit later:
1. Sri Getuk Waterfall
If the weather is good, you can swim there. You can go there in the morning or afternoon.
2. Paragliding Hill / Shoka Hill
Both have great views, you can see along the Parangtritis coastline from this location, and they are close together. You can choose Paragliding Hill if you want to enjoy the sunset with a peaceful atmosphere, or Shoka Hill if you want to enjoy the sunset while eating typical Jogja dishes. I suggest you come here in the afternoon before sunset.
3. Pengger Pine Forest
I suggest you come here at night. you can see the view of the city of Jogja from the top of the hill which is very beautiful.
4. Fried Cabbage / Kol Goreng
You can stop by the lesehan / tent on the side of the road. make sure there is "lesehan" written on the tent, you can find it anywhere at night. You can order fried catfish or fried chicken there, but don't forget to add “Kol Goreng” to your menu list. I'm sure you've never tried this food.
5. Merapi lava tour
For this one I suggest you to come on the 2nd day after visiting all the places before. It’s located quite far from the city center, precisely on the slopes of Mount Merapi. you can rent a jeep that will take you on an adventure to the remnants of the eruption of Mount Merapi. There you will find the Merapi museum which witnessed the enormity of the eruption at that time. In addition, there is another volcano museum that you can visit if you have time, there are miniatures and pictures of the eruption of Mount Merapi. If you like history, you will enjoy this trip.
The second destination is Surakarta City, you can go there directly after ending the tour in Merapi.
From Yogyakarta to Surakarta I suggest you to take the electric train (KRL). Depart from Tugu Jogja station to Purwosari Solo station.
Similar to Yogyakarta, Surakarta is the center of Javanese culture. If Yogyakarta has 1 palace, Surakarta has 2 palaces that you can visit.
1. Kasunanan Palace & Mangkunegaran Palace
You can visit one or both. The two are not too far apart. Both are no longer active as the center of government, but still have a king and royal soldiers. You can learn a lot about the Javanese kingdom there.
From Purwosari Station you can go directly to the bus stop to take a rapid transit bus called BST (Batik Solo Trans) to get to these two places.
2. Klewer Market / Kauman Batik Village
There are 2 ways to shop for batik clothes in Surakarta City. If you prefer traditional and cheap you can try Klewer Market, if you prefer something exclusive you can come to the batik-making village directly in Kauman. Both are not far from the Palace. Batik Solo/Surakata has been widely known as a quality Batik in Indonesia. You can buy some for the family back home.
3. Jaladara Train
Sepur jaladara is an old steam train tour that operates on Jalan Slamet Riyadi, side by side with other vehicle lanes. This train line is the same line that was used during the Dutch colonial period.
To be able to ride Jaladara, you can ask the officers at the Purwosari train station about the departure schedule and ticket costs.
4. Galabo & Nasi Liwet
In the evening you can go to Galabo to enjoy traditional food in the city center. In the morning, you can find Nasi Liwet on the roadside in every corner of the city, only in morning. To be able to find Nasi Liwet, you have to go down to the street around 6-7 am. If it's too late they are closed. Nasi liwet Solo is different from Nasi liwet in Bandung, very different, only the name is the same. you must try it.
5. De Tjolomadoe
Lastly, before you end this trip. You can visit De Tjolomadoe, which is a former large Dutch sugar factory that has been restored and used as a historical tourist spot.
And don't forget to interact with local people in both cities, they are very friendly. Good work, I really like your content. 👍🏻
10:05 Don't go to the basement nick...it is very haunted 😅. I've been there..it's so dark... and cold...🥶. It was originally built to store water for cooling down the temperature of floor above.
We need more content like this Nick! not just walking around and trying street food, But also explore historical places in Indonesia. This is amazing, btw I got Goosebumps when you Explaining the Horrible Story about Lawang Sewu in the hallway.
Good job Nick.
Just a suggestion, a video about top 5 foods or hotels that you experience in Indonesia, could be big hit for your youtube channel
it's creepy, I used to almost walk into the basement because I didn't see the road
Thx for upload this video sir i love it and enjoy for you video... keep make video and good job!
He didn't lie that they threw the bodies to the river at that time. How sad 😔can't imagine what it'd be like.
@@NickKTravel during 5 days battle on Semarang, thats can be brutal time for Semarang citizens. Those region is residentials zone and become hq for Japan those time. Theres any more radicals japanese forces than they wish to work with Pemuda's. The radicals Japanese murders, burn the Kampongs and do more brutal actions at Semarang after issued kill a doctors who investigates poisoning well. In short time, battle is coming anywhere and Japanese finnaly surrounded at those building. But battles goes anywhere. Bodies can be found anywhere and just let it go until cease fire happen. On 7th days, surrounded residentials is daring them self to go out from them house and found bodies overwhelmed the river behind Lawang Sewu. It's only about an hour drive from Semarang.
You can visit the biggest Indonesian Railway Museum.
A lot of foods too!
Aq jd ikut belajar sejarah lg, Nick..... thnkyou
cool... you are good at telling the history of the Indonesian smoothly
Hi Nick, I think you should go to West Borneo, probably in Singkawang City. There is a lot of interesting culture and delicious food. And the city is nickname the City of a thousand Temples. Thx
Yes nick most of us do believe in ghosts, when you go hike the mountains you need to be respectful towards the area because there are many stories that when you say bad words you can either get lost in the mountains or have ghosts look like one of your friends and get you confused. Here's a few channels of ppl that communicate with ghosts: Sara Wijayanto, Kisah Tanah Jawa, Jurnalrisa
Before there were tours (pre 2007)? we used to bribe that jaga to walk around with flashlights... totally unsafe but super fun. Such a cool place
Dear Nick... that's quite explanation about the history, you must have been doing some studies and research about it, you're really trying Nick👍
i never came to lawang sewu, but now i can see of virtual traveling to lawang sewu.. awsome nick!
"do you want to sing a song with us? ".... no i have bad experience before😅😅
GARA2 PENGAMEN DI JAKARTA, saudara kita jadi paranoid sama artis jalanan.
Paling hanya "explore" dibagian luarnya saja.
Tapi itu juga sudah ketemu banyak hal yang aneh-aneh, baik dari manusianya yang tinggal di area itu, maupun dari hal lainnya.
I think there's a museum about ghost and black magic in indonesia in surabaya
You should go there
Your explanation bout Indonesia's history a lot much better than my teacher when I was in High School 😁
Ini sangat menajubkan bung👍👍
I hope you can go to Selo Boyolali, Borobudur Magelang and Prambanan Klaten, Colomadu Solo sugar factory, Cetho temple, Sukuh, Grojogan Sewu waterfall, Tawangmangu Karanganyar, ... Etc...Surakarta..

Underground jail (basement) in lawang sewu have a lot of story not just about mistic (ghosts) but a lot of story / history about the prisoners who locked up there.
I forgot how the year before restoration, me and my friends with guide can access underground jail in lawang sewu, its very spooky and also memorable.
I don't know right know, access in underground jail is closed or still open?
If still open, you must visit underground jail nick..

occasionally travel in the city of Indonesia, bring a friend who can speak Indonesian, bro Nicki, welcome to Indonesia, which has so many natural attractions, bro
the stained glass reminds me of a similar one in Bank Mandiri museum in Kota Tua. Have you been there, Nick? If haven't, you gotta give it a visit.
That building history is actually a lot more disturbing, especially under japanese rule, as many elders said 3,5 years of japan colonialism is a lot painful than hundred years of dutch colonialism..
- There's a chamber where japanese army used to execute people
- Japanese army also used to bring their "s*x slaves" to Lawang Sewu
- Japanese army would execute their slaves if they get pregnant. There was some who got hanged by the Japanese under the ceiling of those corridors.
- There's a lot of beheading, and torture happened in those rooms.
- There used to be a massacre of locals milita group called "Tentara Keamanan Rakjat" .
- They used to forcefully drag people to 3rd floor to be tortured until they meet their fate. And there's more..
It's actually sad and painful monument that always remind me of how colonizers disrespectfully treat our ancestors.
Last time I was at lawang sewu was back in 2014, it was a study trip with my highschool, back then the basement was still open to public, it was an interesting experience going down there!
From bandung.. have a nice vloging nick..God bless you ..
