    Aloha e Kumu Kimo,
Mahalo ka manaʻo mai. He mea nui, he mea waiwai. Hohonu loa ka huakaʻi.
Can I ask you if you know whether kanikau was composed before the era of the nūpepa? You mentioned where kanikau began in the naʻau, travelled to the noʻonoʻo and returned to the naʻau. These oil/mele existed before nūpepa paha?

I was fortunate to attend a lecture on kanikau by Ka'upena Wong early 2000s. He played recordings of a mother lamenting the departure of her child who was being sent to Kalaupapa. I "felt" that pain she conveyed in her chant. The lecture ended at 9p. I was parked across the State Library. Let me tell you, the "chicken skin" I felt when leaving and crossing the grass was something I'll never forget. I took my shoes off and ran to my car! Would I go again to a lecture like that? Yes! But I would park closer.

Aloha e Kalea. Kaʻupena Wong was my uncle; he was my momʻs first cousin. We were blessed in our family that Uncle would kanikau at many of the burials in our ohana. Just like what Kumu Keaulana was saying he expressed so perfectly what we loved and what we lost when one of our ohana passed. At my grandmaʻs burial he did a kanikau for her and he talked about how he would miss her harpia; she was the harpia maker in my family. Mahalo piha no you ʻike e Kumu Keaulana!

@@SephardicHawaiian I've seen your Uncle at family gatherings at Noelani Mahoe hale while growing up. Noe and my mom are first cousins. Her daughter Ohua is closer to my age.I believe Ohua named one of her sons after your Uncle.
