Tiny huts to enjoy the basics in Swedish spartan rural lodge

- For more than 400 years, charcoaling had been traditional industry in the area surrounding Skinnskatteberg, Sweden. Locals burnt charcoal for the iron industry and lived in rustic huts to stay close to the “coaling” process.
To bring back this local tradition (which had died out in the middle of the 20th century), in 1996 the local municipality built 12 charcoal huts from mud and grass: each with 2 slim beds and a fire-burning stove.
Today, Andreas Ahlse, owner of the Kolarbyn eco-lodge, rents out the 12 huts to guests who want to experience a back-to-basics lifestyle. Here you learn to chop your own wood, start a fire with fire steel, collect drinking water and bathe in the lake. “I think people are getting more and more interested in the old history and want to come out here and test how it was.”
There’s no electricity or running water. The huts have just beds and a fireplace and candles. There’s a composting toilet, though you’re encouraged to pee in the woods as long as you avoid the blueberries. There’s no bath house or shower, but there is a large lake with a floating sauna.

My siblings and I grew up going camping in the high mountains where there were only fire pits some of the time. We did not have out houses or tents; we slept under the stars, and if we were lucky, when the rain came we had a tarp over and under us. We were taught how to chop wood and make a fire to cook food; what was safe to eat and what plants to avoid. Those were the best years of my life and I am very grateful for them.
Amazing story, thanks for sharing! started thinking about the times of before when it was usual to sleep outside underneath the stars without any kind of shelter, though; it would have to be hot enough outside for that many people to want to sleep like so out in the wild!
That's some great memories to have. I wish I had something like that to remember although when I was a teenager I started camping with a tent. I loved it then and still love it now. I'm getting ready to buy an RV or a camper for myself to live in. I can't wait. I've lived right by the Ocean before so it's in my blood now and want to go back home to that way of living.
what an amazing teacher.. you could tell he loves life.. loves nature and so gentle with the kid's.. such a lovely breathtaking place. thank you for sharing
the visuals in this video are incredible and the host is super informative and charming
looks like a perfect place to find serenity
Ha ha I love how he said "sparkles" are needed to start the fire 😜
Your family is beautiful! Your videos are beautiful! Thank you for sharing all of this interesting places with us.
My favorite video so far. Loved watching the kids running around, picking berries and exploring.
Nice video, my great grandfather was a coal watcher in Skinnskatteberg, many stories about "trolls" and 24/7 watch so the coal pile didn't catch on fire during the process.
reminds me of my youth,,,,,i was totally fascinated with nature
Part of the fun of watching these is seeing your children grow and add their unique views to the videos.
Kirsten, i love the shots of your kids running down the paths as you record from behind. So adorable! As for the video, I think I could live in a place like that, it is beautiful!
It's great watching your children be children, what wonderful memories you're all making. I love watching your videos and learning and seeing peoples different lives. Thank you so much for sharing you're amazing life.
Thank you for this AWESOME video. This place is now officially on my travel bucket list.
My grandparents used to cook outside constantly.... They'd use a great big coal pot partly because they were poor and partly because it was just cultural... They struggled and educated all of their children.... And now their grandchild watches CZcams videos about cooking outside and building fires to stay warm.... the irony. I even remember them having an outhouse and a water catchment system. If they were still alive I wonder how they would feel about me romanticizing a way of life that they worked so hard to make sure their descendants didn't HAVE to live.
what a wonderful wonderful place! REminds me so much of my own experiences up here in Sweden. If ever I woukd find a small piece of land where I coudl set up a small camp like that I'd sign for it immediately and stay forever. Only thing that is a probklem is taht sometimes you will long for some human contact. But if you bring friends and/or have some transport this is THE way to go! So Kirsten, thank you SO SO SO much for this. I felt so at home and really enjoyed every sec of this video. The best you ever made!
The host of the campground was very nice ;)
+Shay Schneider ...nearly all Swedes are. ....not a nicer people on the earth is to be found. .....honorable and good-hearted people the Swedes.
+Shay Schneider A Nature Hottie & very good and cutting wood!!!!
I need to be-friend more Swedish people I guess then. He was as friendly as my grandma. Just very personable and likable.
He is eerily similar to my father and just as bad at English.
Scandinavian people are very nice, thats why their countries are some of the happiest in the world, i pray that those countries and its people enjoy peace and harmony for ever, nice work Kirsten, your beautiful children will have good memories of time shared with their loving parents.
Your films have so much love in them. Thank you.
Kids are so precious. They are just about the only living being that I truly adore and pray for most often. They are digging this event. Lol 😍
Kirsten - I feel incredibly honoured to be watching both you, your husband & your wonderful children on these remarkable adventures. I only found your channel this morning, & I have already lost a few hours exploring your trips. I hope your children never lose their carefree, adventurous sides - it's so beautiful to watch. I think even as adults we could learn a thing or two from children's attitudes & love towards the great outdoors. It's so special to see parents just let their children run ahead & explore, & it's something I personally feel more of the cautious parents should try - & just let their little ones loose with their inquisitive minds! Bruises fade, tears dry, but memories last a lifetime :) I look forward to watching many more of your older videos. Take care, Laura x
One of the best places I have ever seen my kind of place of peace
I just love watching such videos from my 4 x 4 cubicle. I wish I could afford traveling around the world. There's so much to see, so much to do.
Don't call me and offer me an internet upgrade, please.
Here Come Dat Boi How about a credit card. Interested?
Lovely! It's great fun to watch your little tow-headed crew grow up. What nice memories they'll have!
What an incredible LIFE education for the children. Thank you for including them, they probably will be better educated than 90 % of all other children. I love the silence, or impression of such.
I would love to visit and stay in those cabins. How cosy. He's a very cool guy. Man after my own heart. I love the things he said, I agree totally. He's got one of the best jobs ever! Great video, thanks for sharing this place.
Ohhhh my heart is beating fast. I would just love to come here.
Imagine living like this all the time. Just watching the video was calming and soothing. Thank you so much for sharing.
Went on a two-day hike last weekend near this place, it was really amazing! :)
Regarding the scandinavian traditions of having royal pictures on their toilets:
Back in the day before TP, people used newspapers to clean their behinds. Obviously people did not want to wipe them selves with pictures of the royal family, so in stead they put the pictures up on the walls. :-)
Kirsten, you do such good work. Thanks.
It was such a pleasure to see this video. It could never be too quiet for me. I love the fact that the host had such an amazing High values and he appreciated just feeling the warm sun on his face and taking the time to absorb the nature around him. this looks like a lovely place to vacation. I was so enjoying listening to those adorable sweet beautiful children! I will save this video to my list so I can watch it many times over. I had tears coming down my face watching the kids so excited about picking blueberries! Such an absolutely lovely video! thank you for posting this.
What a wonderful gift, sharing your family's "off the crazy path" into a nature getaway. Thank you, very relaxing.
I found it so relaxing just to watch this video. I'd love to visit this lodge some day. Thanks for sharing :)
Good job, children with nature. Show them how to grow food and hunt.
blessings & abundance!
Pretty sure that when he talked about temperature he used celsius, so -25C is about -13F, great video!
Most Americans are working 50, 60 Hours a week thus they have no time to enjoy things like this.
I am truely glad there are people living like you are. Don't take it for granted.
That would be a great weekend experience
this brought some fine memories of a trip to Denmark, Norway and Sweden made in summer of 1981. we visited such a place with dirt roofs on which were grown vegetable gardens, was a very nice trip
Love this video and your guide was fantastic explaining everything.
I feel so sad about my own life when I watch these videos. But this sadness is an addiction.. started the playlist during my lunch time, and its almost dinner time.
great place. what an adventure for your children. the memories they will have forever is priceless.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep...
But I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep
But I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before I sleep

Charcoal Hobbit Huts, Awesome design.Very inspiring, Outside.
You and your kids have the most wonderful adventures, thanks for sharing them with us :)
This is lovely, it just makes me very claustrophobic.
This is not so dangerous for Kids. Its perfect. Its a perfect adventure to see and learn new things.
I feel so jealous of her kids and their very outdoor and worldly childhoods. They will grow up to be good people!!!
What a wonderful place, a well made video, and a beautiful family. Thank you for sharing :)
stunning landscape and the host is so kind and helpful. I would love to come stay here.
He is the perfect man! Sweet, tall, nature loving, and can chop wood like a boss!
+willem01 I never said anything about being fit. I said SWEET, TALL, NATURE loving, etc... I never said nothing about all the crap you said. Everything I said was character traits accept him being tall.
I'd love to stay here. The host was wonderful. I really enjoyed the part about chopping wood and starting fires. You did well on the filming and editing.
WOW! I want to do this! Good job, Kirsten! Love the video❤️
i love how these children are enjoying the life outdoors
Thank you for another great video. I always look forward to your new ones. I love the way you include your family in your stories. Keep up the great work!
Wonderful place, thanks for showing us!
I've been watching your videos for years, and the simple beauty of this one simply plucked at my heartstrings....the narrator gives a wonderful sense of peace as he describes the beautiful location....the quietness, the sunshine breaking through the clouds and how important that is, the children immersing themselves into the lifestyle of picking berries for food, making fire and washing dishes at the stream....I could go on and on....simply....simply....blissfully....beautiful.
Thank you for the comment. I really loved our stay. It was so quiet in that forest, and as Andreas mentioned, a bit like a fairytale.
you are crazy any t
hig
Little boy looks like my 4 yr old.
We are planning to live like this and when you watch something like this it just makes you want to do it even more :) It was so amazing to watch
so beautiful place,so relaxing ...😘😍
Great video! Thanks for sharing this! 💕
I like the organic earthen huts, they look warm and cozy with a fire place inside.
You have the best job EVER. Love your vids!
watching your video is so relaxing!!!
"How do you know they are not poisonous?" "Because we ate them"
hahaha :D
Your children are absolutely adorable ... you can tell they were having a lot of fun :)
Looks like a great place for a combination of historical living, natural living, and a true camping experience!
When I was in BoyScouts, I built something similar to sleep in at night, for my Wilderness Survival merit badge (minus the fireplace and fur bedding). But this Swedish campground has it all... including abundant food, sauna, cooking facilities, and even a wooden yurt-style dining area. Reminds me of my youth :)
Yes, Kirsten has a beautiful family, i really love how she has raised them, she's my idea of a great mother, making sure they're interacting with Life, nature, diverse cultures & equipping them with an enormous library of useful knowledge so they will know that they have a buffet of choices, best of all, I love that she's teaching them how to truly be free by not being slaves to mortgage, debt & trends. I respect Kirsten so much.
Didn't think that you'd ever visit my home! Live just a few miles away, would have loved to shake your hand and thank you for all the amazing videos ",
I envy you. I wish I could just move there.
Florian Storch
It's never impossible, if you set your mind to it. At least a visit is always a possibility.
We do have pretty great forests and lakes right here were I live, and amazing fells further up north in the country.
"A few miles from here"!? ... How much does "Heaven" rent out for nowadays? :) (Seriously, I envy you.)
beautiful and i wish i could visit it someday...
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you for sharing your experience. Being with nature, learning and living with nature. Experiencing the real deal is very important for every member of a family. Learning how to survive and relearn the basics of which so, so many have forgotton with our convenient modern world. Thumbs up and top rating. Well done.
Looks like so much fun! What a beautiful experience - especially for the kids!
What a wonderful experience for your beautiful children! Awesome 👏🏾 I
I love how she brings her children to these places. exposing them to the world is a wonderful idea and every child should experiance the same or similar
Thank you I enjoyed this, the children enjoyed the time you could see , and the guide had a good perspective on life, For me time outside is never wasted
Most people think that in order to be completely happy & free you need to be a millionaire
i bet that anyone that spent a week in this place they would never want to go back to the real world , why would anyone want to leave paradise

I noticed hear lately a lot of people think you have to live in a Fucking city to be happy too. WTF!
looks like a nice place. watching your hubby try to chop wood was hilarious :)
a bit like remote parts of Canada, very beautiful and peaceful
LOL!! That wood chopping was excellent....have we progressed so far as a civilization we have forgotten such BASIC simple skills.
Looks like a really wonderful place. I'd love to go there. It's a great place for kids to sea a different way of living. Very special. They've done a wonderful job. Their passion and knowledge is admirable.
Very refreshing video. Nature has a way of bringing about peace and tranquility.
This place is incredible!!! I'd love to go one day :)
Thank you SO much for sharing this wonderful get-away. I have been following my intuitions lately and have wanted to build something similar to the tiny earthen huts. I LOVE this - it feels, of course, so organic - and so real. You've captured the beauty of this enchanted forest so perfectly.
What a special and splendid place this is! The chance to see such a charming family enjoy it adds to the viewer's satisfaction. I am 'saving' this video for sure.
One of your very best ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love those little children - so innocent and good natured.
I am not a church goer neither am I religious, yet watching them play and explore I kept thinking how the Master taught us saying, "Lest you become as one of these little ones you will not see the Kingdom of Heaven."
I have saved this video to show my friends and to refresh my heart from time to time. Thank you for posting it.
Brilliant Vid as always, OMG really love people who look after & nature Nature!!!! Also K ur eldest daughter is really sweet she is a lot like you!!!!!I loved her blue berry response!!!! Thank you for showing us these incredible Magical Places & these gentle people who love & live Harmoniously with nature!!!!!!
I remember when my family went camping when I was younger. What a experience!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Very relaxing. Saved it to watch often. My gr grandfather was from Sweden. I love being in nature as well. Learned so much. Thank you so much for sharing this. 🤗 I watched it twice & shared it. Wonderful. 🌄🙏
you have the best job ever
So beautiful and peaceful. It was a great video on nature and how to live simply.
I like how independent your kids seem to have become through all these adventures.
Independent in a fake, nature, bare-foot life that is. Put these kids in modern society, they are clueless.
comon Hannes Troll, we all have bad days, but just don't post like that again.
"independence" does not necessarily imply isolation. You didn't "independently" come into the world or grow up, did you?
+HannesVM now days that's the goal.
very nice
The kids are so darn cute esp the little blond boy who is always eating blueberries. Love it. God bless
Thanks Kirsten.
What a delightful way to live and a great guy with a great perspective. It was fun to see your kids when they were younger, Kristen.
I stayed at a viking home in Sweden once. Getting on the toilet was a difficult task for me because it was built for tall people and I'm short compared to the house owners. But it was a great experience.
Goodness this place is beautiful! I would love to spend time here.
cartograp be my guest
i enjoyed seeing these kids having fun more than the main idea of the video
just an awesome video
Wow--your kids are "soo lucky!!" (even though there's no such thing as luck) You are really giving them an education with what you're doing. I also enjoy seeing your "family camping trips!" A wholesome channel you have here :) (thank you)
***** I would say it's because of intelligent parenting, too.
Wrong, they are learning things about nature as if it is all around us. The reality is that none of what they are learning now, can be used in modern society. (let them) Return to those woods when they're 14/16 years old and they'll be amazed of how beautiful and quiet everything is.
HannesVM Well maybe they're 'really smart' parents and they plan on 'not returning' to modern society. You've got to 'disconnect' from this facade of modern society---I realized that I was a slave and did some disconnecting myself, and the stress literally 'fell off.'
luck is based off life's randomness. for example, bad shit happens, good luck is when bad shit happens and you look around and wonder how come it didn't happen to you. What do you call that? Maybe you took some precautions? So did others, bad shit still happened. Luck.
there is actually a lot a city person can learn from hanging out in nature, to pretend there is nothing to draw from is like saying you can only hold your breath when your under water... you might want to hold it in when someone farts. You don't need specific instructions to learn life lessons. one thing getting away from a bunch of people teaches is self reliance as we as a species are heavily dependent on each other and society to take care of us. Protection, shelter, power, water, food... it's all taken for granted and not much appreciation is taken for the amount of work taken to do these things outside of the group. as for your kids, take them when they are 14/16 and hooked on digital gear and they might not notice nature at all. Are reactions useless when crossing the road? I bet a bunch of those poor sobs playing PokemonGo could have used some nature lessons before they died.
Beautiful video. Thank you Kirsten
Amazing place thanks for sharing :)
The forest and lake, the views remind me of my own backyard in the northwest corner of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Such peacefulness and such beauty. I wish there was a camp like this near me. I might have to move in. lol
What brought me pure joy in watching this was seeing your children explore and not be afraid to see what their surroundings held. As your oldest was cooking eggs over an open fire, it brought to mind how my sister wouldn't even allow her sons to use a microwave until they were 12! My own son has been cooking with the stove since he was very young. You and your partner are giving them such a tremendous life!
