    And I’ve heard a lot of people go
    “Oh, an electrician fixes a mall and doesn’t get royalties. Why actors?”
    A lot of reasons, but one reason especially for child actors is it’s not like they can just go and get a normal life after this.
    Gary Coleman had his family blow his money, so when he got a job as a mall security guard, he’d regularly get made fun of for it.
    A 15 year old doing a TV show really can’t just go at 30 and work a normal gig.

    • @sparrowwilson4514
      @sparrowwilson4514 Před rokem +72

      Also, electrician is a more secure job. Actors can go literally months or even years between jobs, royalties helps them to get through the leaner times. Not only this, but an electricians work isn’t making income. Movies and TV make money indefinitely, why should the studios get all the benefit of that additional income. The actors and crew should also get a share since it was their work that helped make the product. It’s essentially like buying shares in a business. You all get dividends.

Also, the more obscure they are the easier the transition will be. You can’t compare the girl who played the main character’s best friend on a show from a decade ago to Selena Gomez, who was the main character, or Hilary Duff, who was also a main character, and are gonna be recognized far quicker. Gary Coleman was also a main character hence why he was made fun of at his “normal” job as a mall security guard.

      Actually, they didn't make $55M. The 2003 movie was made on a budget of $17M. They also spend millions advertising it. It has a box office return of $55.5M. Half of that went to the theatres. So they only brought in about $28M. So, they made less than $10M -- depending on how much they spend on marketing.
      So, you spend $55M and in three years, you make maybe 10% profit. And if the movie only earned $40M at the box office, you'd lose money.
      And of course, Hilary Duff made $1M at the age of 16 on a single movie with only months work. She also published albums, did other movies, did TV series, etc. Well over 40 since 2003. She presumably made millions on those. The average American makes a lifetime total of $1.7M and she probably earned that by 20. She's well past the top 1% even as a child. Your average 16 year-old is working for $9/hour trying to make enough for save up for community college.

    How do they get around child labor laws to let these kids have an acting job, yet these young working people can't make royalties on their own work?

    I’m going to be honest, I thought her mom was kind of mean for turning down the second film due to money…but I mean she was getting no royalties for Lizzie McGuire, got a mill for the first film, I personally think Disney, in the early 2000’s could have given her 5 million; that seems viable.

    I feel like royalties should be the default method of compensation for entertainers unless they want to negotiate a flat fee. It’s a bigger incentive to put out the best possible product. Once people get a guaranteed number in their head, they’re basically incentivized to give the bare minimum that they’re contractually obligated to give just to get the payout.

    This has to be wrong because he didn't even mention her cloathing lines like 'Duff Stuff' and a line of Perfumes, there were many other gigs that she got paid for & her parents are already rich in the 1st place, that's why she turns down $4mil because she's more concerned about her brand and a dud movie hurts that. He didn't mention her concert tours in which tickets were very pricy and she filled arena's. The entire time during the 200X she was living in a huge mansion in talouka lake and then she bought her sister a nearby house just so they could both have their own houses-right next to each other. no indication that this supposed lack of income prvented her from buying whatever houses or cars she wanted.

    $4M ($6.6M inflation adjusted) is still better than $0. Someone gotta teach actors to invest. Stop relying on residuals. Take the big upfront and invest 30%.
