What a beautiful plant. Lynn, I want to say thank you to you and Han's for such inspirational videos - a couple of years ago after having watched your channel for a few months, I decided to plant some Cleistocactus seeds that I bought from a supplier in Sweden. I have the golden variety coming in a few days. I'm excited to have my first hanging cactus.
    *Tech tip:
When replanting a hanging pot, use a flat head screwdriver to pry apart the S hook and remove the chains until finished, then fasten them back and crimp shut the S hook to secure the leaders.

@@desertplantsofavalon I hope you see this Lynn...I got a monkey tail from a box store last month and its tall and started to lean. The question is how long does it take to actually 'hang"? • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Před rokem

@@green-eyedlady5354 Thats wonderful you have got a Monkeys tail cactus, they usually start to lean over the side of the pot once the arms reach about a foot in height, they then start to lean over and hang and then more arms will start to grow from the base of the cactus, it can take a couple of years or more depending on how fast the original cactus grows, thanks so much for watching and happy growing with your Monkeys tail cactus, wishing you a wonderful plant powered day XXXX

The only difference is that mine only has one tail at the moment - would you recommend to cut into two pieces to fasten the process or shall I just repot the one tail to a hanging basket and let it grow into multiple tails by itself, please? @@desertplantsofavalon thanks! good to know! All my other cacti dry out quickly. Maybe not a day, but within a few days. I’m in MInnesota in the USA, and it’s not as damp and as wet as by you, but this is the situation. This plant came from California and it takes about a week to dry out after a watering. Which made me panic a bit but when I asked the grower, they said it takes about a week to dry out by then. Granted they are in CA and it’s sunnier there more consistently there and in the Winter it will be a different story but it seems this plant likes being wet that long. Which is bonkers to me. It’s in a pretty rich compost, but still a little airy. It’s so happy and I just got it and dont want to have to repot it right now into a grittier mix, but do you think I should given I’m in MN? Or do you think it’s ok because it’s been growning that way and happy? It is massive so maybe it needs more water but a week to dry out seems crazy to me, but like I said, he seems to like it but then do a run a little risk because I’m in MN instead of CA? Our summers here are hot and we get about 200 sunny days a year, and I’ll be careful not to water him then have a week of rain or whatever, but does it seem too risky to you to take so long to dry out?
Loooooong post. Lots to explain! 🙂🌵❤️

He’s also in a 10” plastic pot and and barely fits in it. He will beed reporting in Spring but am I nuts into try and keep him in the heavier mix in MN? 😬 Better safe than sorry and repot into an airier mix?

@@ExpertAquariumGirl Hi Mandy :-D I think because your Monkeys tail is a big and more mature cactus it will definitely be safe to go a week in damp soil, these Monkey tails can definitely take more moisture and go longer in wet soil than the Desert types can, I would leave it in the same pot and soil its in,but if you have a few days of continuous rain its best to cover it to protect it from excess rain, here in Ireland we can get a lot of rain even in Summer, and if we get 3 days or more of rain I put my Monkeys tail in the house or polytunnel to help it dry out faster, but these cacti can take a lot more rain and stay longer in wet soil during the Spring and Summer months than the other types of desert cacti e.g the Barrel cacti varieties, XXXXX

@@ExpertAquariumGirl Hi Mandy :-D its best to leave him in the same pot and soil he is in to let him acclimatise to the new conditions from California to Minnesota, and then give him a repot into a new pot and soil next spring, if you can protect him from any rain that continues for 3 days or more your Monkeys tail will be ok, XXXX

:( I collected both a golden monkey tail and the white, fuzzier version of this and made it into year THREE with both. I had pups at the base of both and the golden was growing so fast!
I set them out for sun this spring in the same spot I’ve put them for the last couple of years and one morning as I’m checking my plants with coffee I see huge chunks missing from them. I was so confused lol. I looks up at the tree nearby, I look around for animals, I’m trying to figure out if it’s something that fell but there’s no damage to anything else nearby. I moved them into my screen porch and mourn the damage over coffee…still wondering what happened…….then the next morning I see the culprit sitting on the little table. A CROW! A stinkin CROW pecked my precious cacti. :(
I didn’t think a bird would want to peck at such a prickly thing! Crows are a lot bigger up close than I ever realized thought lol. He was quite large.
Anyway, on the more tender, fuzzy version I’ve cut away the damage and saved the ends of two legs. I hope they will reroot and maybe the main will pup back out at the base. It was nearly eaten clean through.
The golden was damaged but it wasn’t as deep so I figure I can leave that one. (Should I leave it or cut it back as well?) It pecked about 3” from the base on both long legs of the golden and got at one of the 4 pups :(. Hopefully as it grows out I won’t see it and if I do, I can tell a tale of a pesky crow lol.
The fuzzy one grows SO much slower. Neither look like yours….which is confusing lol.
The one I have that’s similar in color is not fuzzy. Maybe it’s just less mature?. The legs are about 8-9” each (golden) but they are very prickly and less hairy. Now my white one is hairy like yours but it’s not yellow at all. It’s def more white. I’m now wondering if there’s another variety I need to hunt! You fuel my obsession 🤣
My little girl has leukemia so we began collecting cacti and rhipsalis…..easy to care for plants. We are away from home a lot and these do seem to thrive with neglect! We love ur videos. Ty for sharing ur expertise! I was debating a new pot for both of these this year as they are beginning to hang over the sides so much that they will need a cradle soon. (I make a hanger from jute or rope to set the clay pot in). I had heard they like to be crowded as their root system is shallow? I even wonder if maybe my fuzzy guy is in too large a pot. Anyway. I could ask u a million questions. Thank u again :)
    Love from Alabama!

Oh no with the naughty Crow, so sorry to hear the Crow has taken chunks from your two Monkey tail Cacti, Crows can be huge and I have seen Crows take flower buds off and especially fruit pods off and fly past the window with them in their mouths LOL!, I think its best to leave your Golden Monkeys tail as any damage should heal over and new shoots will grow from the damage, and the fuzzy Monkey tail cuttings should re root again as cuttings, they root well from cuttings, they do like to be kept a bit more crowded as they have shallow root systems and are more easier to get to flower when the roots are slightly more rootbound, I repotted my Fluffy Monkeys tail two years ago and it didn't flower last year but put on more growth, and hope it will flower again this year, the good news is any damage will repair itself and new growth will come back from the base as new pups, these fuzzy white Monkeys tail gets more hairier as it matures and the golden Monkeys gets more golden in colour as it matures, but I think that there are a few different hybrids of these cacti now :-D thats so wonderful that you and your daughter love Cacti and Rhipsalis, they are wonderful plants to grow and easy to care for too, Rhipsalis is a wonderful group of cacti to grow

I wrote to you before, I'm originally from Dublin but live in Toronto. If it is infact Golden Rattail can you let me know where i can get a true monkey tail. Thank you my dear, I love your videos.
