- I've created a video with build details here: • DIY Autonomous GPS Mow...
This is my build of an autonomous mower. My farm has lots of long narrow lanes to be mowed and rather than purchase a GPS driven mower ($5 thousand and up!) I built one. It's components are:
1. Mission planner/Ardurover
2. Drivetrain - Battery, electronic speed controller, electric bike motors
3. Frame and wheel assemblies - fabricated by hand
4. Gas push mower
This was a fun build to create and is even more fun to watch in action. Enjoy! - Jak na to + styl
This looks like what I need for my orchard. I’m keen as it will go under the low branches too. Any more details will be appreciated greatly!
my brother, seeing this now... literally did the same project on a bigger platform!!! love this!
I can't wait for the detailed video. This looks awesome already!
Coming soon!

I am paralyzed from the chest down and I am 1000% interested in as much detail as you will get into please. This is awesome.
I've made a more detailed build video, jump in here: czcams.com/video/yt_4_t4DEqo/video.html
That is awesome. I hadn't thought of using Ardupilot for the brains, but of course it makes sense. Great project!
Glad it was helpful!
Best mower! I would be obsessed with making it run from gasoline alone, adding an alternator to keep the battery charged.
Yeah, that's going to be in the next revision of it, it'll keep the battery charged up I hope
I have to make one ...thanks for the videoconferencing
Great design! Please more details are needed.
looks amazing.
Awesome project!! I would love a more detailed follow up video 😊
I actually made the detailed build video - here: czcams.com/video/yt_4_t4DEqo/video.html&lc=Ugwxhf-rd0TCRNifYcp4AaABAg
😀😀😀absolutely love this!
I used mission planner for drones when I was still working in that industry. I was thinking of using it for exactly this and sure enough I find your video. I'm still debating between using ardupilot or openmower instead.
Outstanding
Thanks!
Great project. If I were you I'd install caterpillar tracks on it.
Heh, that sounds like a plan - got any ideas for how to get a hold of some for cheap? I'd 3d print but I don't think the plastic would hold up.
nice
Thanks! It was a fun project
Awesome. Please share more details. I also dream to build my own someday
Check this video for details: czcams.com/video/yt_4_t4DEqo/video.html
looks like the sparkfun neom8-p will get u RTK and it's got I2C connections too so should be able to connect to regular flight controller. they're only 175 bucks each and you can make a rover with it too
Yes - that is another good GPS choice. It's similar to the here3 GPS though, the cost is also in the 900MHZ radio and the cube orange. There are cheaper options on both of those though - there's packages on amazon for instance. But I tried a cheap pixhawk first and the 900mhz radio included only reached about 100 meters which wasn't enough for me and the pixhawk had a different GPS port (fewer pins) and I didnt feel comfortable modifying my here3 even though it's possible in theory. That's how I ended up with pretty expensive hardware. I'm trying to think up cheaper alternatives now.
@@nathanbuildsdiy I can't figure out if the gps data from that sparkfun breakout board is in the same format that other flight controllers recognize through their UART? someone said it wouldn't be compatible
i guess the cube has specialized outputs for left and right motors and manages them for you as opposed to using a regular flight controller for quads or airplanes? or does ardupilot manage that
it looks like the tricycle / recumbent market makes some nice wheels, axles and drive arrangements for a setup like this, just cut the axle in half.
Good questions! I'll try to answer all here. I started with a cheaper pixhawk kit + GPS and realized the GPS wasn't accurate enough (no RTK) so I moved to the here3+ GPS which was the cheapest way to get RTK but then I realized it was a different connector (and different # of pins) than my original cheap pixhawk GPS connection. I read how I could rewire it and possibly use it with the cheaper pixhawk but decided to go with the more expensive cube orange which has the proper connector/# of pins on the GPS.
Both the cheaper and more expensive pixhawks can do the "skid steer" rover setup - that is, where you get the left/right motors, and in a different video I actually use the same cube orange on a drone, but I could have used the cheaper pixhawk there too.
You also mentioned a heading hold gyro, I hadn't considered that yet, BUT I found this - 2 GPS for yaw control (which is also in the arudpilot docs had I looked hard enough) which I think would get you the same thing:
czcams.com/video/2mk8fhbTN3Y/video.html
@@nathanbuildsdiy actually I think the heading hold functionality should be in ardupilot, in INAV there are different flight modes that keep the plane pointed in the same heading, or like acro mode in betaflight.
I'm looking at go-cart wheels and sprockets, it looks like those bike wheels tear up the grass.
I want to make an FPV version with front and back cameras so you don't have to turn around. it looks like cube want u to use their proprietary video.
motor 12v 250w and how long the lawn mover can run?
because i saw there is no alternator
Amazing!! It's raining here in Italy and I'm about to start mowing my garden again, this wet spring is making the grass grow like hell and I really enjoyed your video!! Do you still use it?!
Yup! It's still going. I'll have to change the car battery and push mower when they eventually wear out, but it's going well for now.
Nice, which GPS model do. you use? Why. you need 3 GPS? I. think 1 rover and 1 base station. is. also ok?
here3 GPS - it's just a single GPS with RTK base station correction. I don't run my own here base station since we have base stations all over around here (farmers connect to them to get corrections for their equipment so I just use the same signal)
Heey. This is just about the most awesome project there is on DIY autonomous rovers. I wanted to touch base and know which controller you are using and the kind of gps module you used. I have a very similar project and I really need your help with it. Please reach out.
I use a cube orange autopilot and here3+ GPS. The here3 can do base station corrections which makes it much more accurate, within a few centimeters. I didn't need the here base station since we have base stations all over the state (Iowa has the Leica network - farmers connect to it with their combines to get accurate GPS in their fields). I'm actually preparing to update this video in the next week or so with the configs in mission planner to make the cube orage/here3 work in this configuration, let me know if that update doesn't clarify everything.
Here's where I got the radio/autopilot/gps:

Good project I have a 100 hp farm tractor that I would like to do this with where can I learn how to do this
Yes, it can be done! ardupilot documentation/forum is a good reference and start point. you'll have to change the rover type from skid steer to a more "normal" throttle/steer setup for your tractor. You could put a linear actuator on the throttle and a BIG servo on the steering. It'd require a fair bit of testing, probably start with a little model to prove out the idea, then scale up to the real thing
Is there a reason you didn't design things to be more compact, like mounting parts directly to the mower frame, or were you more interested in simplicity? Thank you.
I wanted to be able to swap out the mower from the frame when the mower breaks down. It's going over some rough ground and often hits sticks/walnuts etc. This mower pictured lasted about a year and a half, but it was a $10 pickup from facebook marketplace.
For the next revision I may just get a nice mower and mound directly to the mower.
ya guy its too bad you didnt get more views. i would like to make this but the computer controller/GPS side of things is what i would like to see
YES
i AM LOOking for this too let me know if you find a better video explanation on the setup and tutorial side of htings for that
I'm working on just such a video - starting with a detailed drone build that uses the same hardware and then will create the mower detailed video.
czcams.com/video/yt_4_t4DEqo/video.html Here's the detailed video, jump to 2:00 to get into the details
great video, really interesting, just wish your mic was in both ears. otherwise you get my sub!
Sorry about the audio, I'm new to video editing, I'll try to get it fixed in future videos.
What about a ride on mower robot?
It's doable. A zero-radius turn mower would be simplest. Same set up as this (it's a skid steer, like R2D2 from star wars). Just replace the electric bike motors with linear actuators that connect to the skid steering. A "normal" rider would be a bit more complicated. You could put a servo motor on to control steering, but the throttle/gear engage to power the wheels forward would be tricky. It'd take some thought.
@@nathanbuildsdiy Some of the commercial ZTRs have can bus. ;-)
I'm calling 📞 the dog barbers
Awesome work! Would it be easier if you used and electric mower? It would be awesome if you sold the brain kits so individuals could fabricate the rest. Thanks for sharing!
if this audio happens again copy paste into new track make fake stereo
Great advice, I just made updates in shotcut so I'll get stereo audio posted today
Well dang, I can't re-upload videos once they're on here without deleting the first video. I'll have to make that change for future vids.
Did you learn this at university? I'll bet not. Tell us more, dammit!
No, I don't think you can learn these sort of things in university.
I studied electrical engineering and spent years doing chip design and system architecture/admin, but that wasn't really much preparation for this. I went through a bunch of prototypes and read a lot of ardupilot documentation before I hit on the working design here. If only there were a robotics degree or something where you could actually build this sort of thing in school!
