i had one on a cement mixer it always ran too hot,so i decided to strip it down (suspected head gasket )anyway i drained the water down then looked inside the hopper for the head bolts, and what did i find , half a tank of gravel,. obviously before i got it some one was mixing cement and just throwing the gravel all over the place , some went in the hopper reducing the water capacity.So i fished it all out after breaking it up as it had solidified,so after that it ran as sweet as a nut,sold it eventually to a doctor,who said(after i showed him how to operate the mixer)what do i do if it wont go in the morning,i replied give it two paracetamol ,then ring me (he never had any problems with it)

A plea on behalf of the carb float; please don't jab the tickler repeatedly as shown here - just hold it down steadily until the float chamber is full. The metal of a sheet brass float is very thin indeed, and hitting the tickler will eventually dent it, and may even make a hole in it.

@@Spac8 stationaryengineparts.com have a bunch of parts for these all made brand new in england, also ebay is good aswell as some of the facebook pages such as the origanal lister D page. Parts are easy to get. Great engines.
We used one for about 25 years , belt driving a Lister sheep shearing drive bracket , totally reliable bit of old gear , not earth shatter - ingly fast , but get the flywheel spinning & nothing will stop her . One would be good for driving a water pump or generator , Lister made these also .
Sorry - I just don't understand this. Wonderful video, wonderful Lister engine, but since when does a diesel engine employ a spark plug? Cape Town, RSA.

The lister D-type is a petrol engine. Although lister are well known for their diesel engines, they made a large number of petrol engines too
