The writer of this song, Horatio Spafford, went through several hardships and tragedies in his life. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed his business. Then his son died of scarlet fever. Wanting to relieve the stress, he sent his wife and 4 daughters to Europe on a vacation while he stayed behind and would join them later on. The ship hit another vessel, and within minutes it sank, and his 4 daughters were killed. His received a telegram from his wife which read "saved alone". When Spafford went to join his grieving wife, he passed the spot where the ship with his 4 daughters on it died, and wrote the words to this song.
