      if you hear hissing / rattling sound of a snake don’t run
      stop and try to find a snake, running and stepping on a snake might make things worse
      also usually if there is one snake, there might be more around

    "Heard a hissing sound and smelled gas" - which means "we didn't contact the gas company to locate where their gas pipes are and we accidentally punctured their main gas pipe into the building and it exploded because we are stupid".

      Right?! The glass in the windows on the floor right above the street-level bank isn't even cracked. (Altho, that's not to say the building's basement and street levels didn't sustain bad structural damage [doubt it, tho, because it looks like it's 100% "fire-proof," reinforced concrete construction faced with exterior brick].) Those 1910s and '20s reinforced concrete "high-rises" were built super beefy.

    They mentioned apartments on the floors above the bank, but no one mentioned what happened to all of the tenants. Did they evacuate them from the building? Any news on them? How many apartments? How many tenants? Just curious.

      No, I'm pretty sure that his fellow reporters saw some little stick-o-dynamite scampering around on little cartoon legs, fingers in its ears, awaiting the big BOOM when they called it out, told it, "Hey, buddy, your fuse is out," and then watched as it searched in vain in its pockets for a match to relight it's own fuse.
      Or yeah, maybe the reporter misplaced a word or three in his excitement.

    Gas explosion basically blew the glass windows out, the building has a steel frame, it would survive that and can be repaired.

    Very similar to the explosion that happened in Fort Worth at the Sandman Hotel, back in January. It was natural gas, in the kitchen, in the basement. LNG is tricky.

    I about died on the job once when a pay by day worker threw a pallet and hit the main gas supply for a large building downtown and we started smelling gas everybody yelling fires out fires out no flames then fire department all that stuff

      Plumber here, I’ve worked in several buildings with the gas on. Typically all the utilities are on. It’s up to the contractors to be qualified and work in a safe manner.

    Gas is dangerous. One false move, one spark. Why was it left ON in a construction area? Oh, it's Ohio. Safety regulations to protect citizens have been gutted, saves $$$$ for the rich.

      They have housing in the above buildings so shutting it off for weeks or months won't fly. That's why you get blue prints and diagrams, of where the gas lines are and not cut there.

    Years ago I was in a job site trailer in Downtown Toronto and all of a sudden we heard a huge explosion. Apparently the company drilling caissons for the building foundation hit a methane gas pocket in trapped in the shale releasing and igniting it resulting in a massive single fireball. It was out as soon as it ignited. The operator of the drilling machine needed a diaper change after that incident.

      Not true, they can replace supporting beams, the WTC had a huge hole blasted thru several floors from a truck bomb in the basement before 9/11, the tower stood fine and the damage repaired
