I love how she admite in her autobiography that she was so nervous and had no idea how to deliver a line, she just kind of says everything in a monotone voice with no expression. I really respect artists in any capacity that can look back at their earlier work and give their own critique. Its also great to see how much she grew as a comic and her confidence rise.
I remember watching this when it was first on TV. I was breast feeding my son at the time and I laughed so much he kept getting milk squirted in his eye. Poor lamb. He is 6 foot 5 now so no harm done.
Reading Jo's autobiography. Her early days on the road are hilarious! She put up with a lot of heckling from stupid pricks pissed out of their tiny minds. She's a brilliant comedian and very smart. A national treasure like Fry.
I think it is 1987 as I was actually in the audience! I think Jo unusually appeared twice-they didn't usually repeat acts-and I was there for her second time. I went to the after show party and saw Jo getting fairly merry with the Pogues as I remember!
Just been reading her book "Can't Stand Up For Sitting Down" and it was interesting to read the background of this performance, and how she approached her early steps into comedy.
Her technique is awesome... I love the monotone voice it so suits her for some reason... although a few (very few) of the jokes seem a bit dated I think she did amazingly well for 1986. She seems like a very progressive comic.. although I could just be talking out my arse what do I know?
A recording of a university lecture brought me here, because I realised that her voice reminds me of Jo Brand. I laughed through the entire 45 minutes although there was nothing funny said. I assume it was only the imagination of Jo giving the lecture.
hello! Was that "Friday Night Live" broadcast on Channel 4 in 1987? Could anyone remember? I see some of you have been there. Could you let me know where that show took place? I am researching for a comedy show. Please let me know if you are able to help. Thank you!
Interesting to see how her style has developed - it seems a little too monotone here and her intonations are repetitive, but her more recent performances have the nonchalant sarcasm carried off to perfection.
I thought my slumberland orthopaedic bed was going to be very comfortable when I bought it,'cos the man in the shop said to me "on this bed, you'll sleep like a baby",I didn't realise this would mean I'd wake up crying every 5minutes and wetting the bed 4 times a night.Of course the continuous nocturnal winging and the incontinence didn't go down a treat with the boyfriend,he left me. HAHAHA jo brand sooooooo funny I said this today in school and made every1 laugh I even used the bored pissed of
I get that it's part of her act, but the monotone delivery gets slightly annoying. It sounds like she's announcing the football results on radio 5live.
@Oohyoutouchmytalala Oh The diet Atkins. I think I'm right in saying his diet eventually killed him. Theres a lesson there for Brand just not sure what it is.
what's with....all the....pauses? and i can't believe we just watched 6 minutes of the exact same speech pattern for every single sentence! having said that i do like the current jo brand
What's funnier - deadpan or animated? I'm starting out as a comedienne and I need to know. I think animated is funnier but might scare a reserved audience.
I'm starting too. Try different things because not everyone likes the same things. It will take time for a career to take off, so you have plenty of time to experiment when doing gigs. Also, film yourself delivering the same set in different styles, you can do it at home to practice and see how it might look and sound.
I just watched a Live at the Apollo episode with Jo Brand from 2018. She wasn’t funny in 1987 and she isn’t now. ....and you KNOW IT. Russell Howard was also on Live at the Apollo too - he’s about as funny as skin cancer also.

Write Jo and tell her -- she'd get a good laugh! :D

Write Jo and tell her -- she'd get a good laugh! :D
Fucking disgusting.
is it only me, or is her voice just beautiful? :) i love it.
Jo Brand's voice is deceptively soothing, setting you up for a killer punch line. Funny as hell-o.
wow she was so deadpan wen she started out. Gotta love her!
Reading Jo's autobiography. Her early days on the road are hilarious! She put up with a lot of heckling from stupid pricks pissed out of their tiny minds.
She's a brilliant comedian and very smart. A national treasure like Fry.
Aye right 🤣
I like her but she's become a bit repetitive lately with her jokes
Blimey ! Someone thinks she's a comedian 😂😂😂.
I love Jo Brand, a real person.
A real person who jokes about throwing battery acid over people.
I think it is 1987 as I was actually in the audience! I think Jo unusually appeared twice-they didn't usually repeat acts-and I was there for her second time. I went to the after show party and saw Jo getting fairly merry with the Pogues as I remember!
Jo appeared with the Pogues on 15th April 1988 but this routine is from 26th February 1988
The comments from the haters are hilarious. If you don't like Jo Brand......why watch her?....Durrrr.
she's really so lovely here. i think so anyway.
Jimmy Carr doesn't come anywhere near Jo Brand, he never will. Jo Brand is hilarious!
WOW! That was awesome! Great comic genius in there!
This is absolutely hilarious!
That's amazing. So dry.
She was funny then, and STILL is now.
Just been reading her book "Can't Stand Up For Sitting Down" and it was interesting to read the background of this performance, and how she approached her early steps into comedy.
this routine is from 26th February 1988 - the show was renamed Friday Night Live in 1988
Aboslutely hilarious - Jo Brand is the queen of sarcasm and bitching!!!
1988
jo brand is fab.......
Her technique is awesome... I love the monotone voice it so suits her for some reason... although a few (very few) of the jokes seem a bit dated I think she did amazingly well for 1986. She seems like a very progressive comic.. although I could just be talking out my arse what do I know?
Well done JO!!
Good performance off camera too by the way!
A recording of a university lecture brought me here, because I realised that her voice reminds me of Jo Brand. I laughed through the entire 45 minutes although there was nothing funny said. I assume it was only the imagination of Jo giving the lecture.
Oh My Gosh !
This is brill, where on earth did you find this ?
She did look rather scared, but look at what she turned into !
We sat next to her at The Gielgud (sp?) Theatre when we went to see "God of Carnage!"
She said Happy Birthday to my Dad! Yey!
she's not the sea monster, she's my hero[ine]

...and ate it.
Friday night live 2022!!!!
lol she is so awesome
Interesting to see how her style has developed - it seems a little too monotone here and her intonations are repetitive, but her more recent performances have the nonchalant sarcasm carried off to perfection.
I have since learned to loathe her more than I did 3 decades ago.
fucking brilliant!
tho' i agree about the announcer-voice, dang it she has stage presence, and through stillness, too!
Lol love her
What did I say, I as only quoting Jo. I think she's brilliant.
I read that book: “Fat is a feminist issue,” Got a bit desperate half way through, & ate it! 😂😂
bloody hell she hasn't aged in 40 years
I noticed that to lol
I thought my slumberland orthopaedic bed was going to be very comfortable when I bought it,'cos the man in the shop said to me "on this bed, you'll sleep like a baby",I didn't realise this would mean I'd wake up crying every 5minutes and wetting the bed 4 times a night.Of course the continuous nocturnal winging and the incontinence didn't go down a treat with the boyfriend,he left me. When was the actual date for this episode she was in? I'm writing and essay on her.
Sorry, really no idea. I digitised it from an ancient VHS tape years ago. Comment below from sue d suggests it was in 1987 - you could ask her
That first part of the first joke, Lee Evans stole that
5:01 LOL!!!!!!
Here because of Kitten Rescuers
@sail1948 I assume s/he means Robert atkins, the creator of the famous diet m'love.
I love how comedians of today perform her material *cough* Lee Evans *cough*
TheImprosarios Page what did he copy off of her?
good evening, i am the sea monster!
I find her really beautiful here... I am irreparably gay... but yano.
Georgery R I’m gay too but she’s pretty
Irreparably?
She hasn't perfected the delivery yet... but you're watching a truly unique genius emerge!!!!!
Is it just me or has she got hotter as she got older?
good evening i am the sea monster!
could be in the Texaco Cup
Then why did you watch the video then..? -_-;
I get that it's part of her act, but the monotone delivery gets slightly annoying. It sounds like she's announcing the football results on radio 5live.
Good Evening I'm the Sea Monster
or even a uefa competiton
or you even could have been thinking of the Scottish team "Queen's Park" rather than Queen's Park Rangers
@Dave70100 Hadnt what?
She looks like Julian clary here
@Oohyoutouchmytalala Oh The diet Atkins. I think I'm right in saying his diet eventually killed him. Theres a lesson there for Brand just not sure what it is.
If you read her book 'Look back in hunger' she says it's because it's because she didn't know how to deliver the jokes.
I think self-deprecating humour is great.
If you like Jo Brand, try on Debra DiGiovanni.
Actually freakboy2891 she can. There is BOTH freedom of speech AND opinion.
I love Jo Brand but she's looking like morticia adams (with a haircut) and how she speaking is like my local bingo caller in town!
yep that's the word. I don't consider her to be though, just the way people like Jimmy Carr etc aren't mysogynists
@ilovehellokitty92
"like" is annoying too ;) only kidding.
if you watch her now she doesn't do that tone so much anymore.
what's with....all the....pauses? and i can't believe we just watched 6 minutes of the exact same speech pattern for every single sentence! having said that i do like the current jo brand
mostly her dead pan delivery!!! lol
What's funnier - deadpan or animated?

No answer you need to work it out should be instinctual to you
@brawlerwoods Learn to spell Nimrod!
she stole that first joke from Lee Evans
she definitely got better at it... her intonation is weird! good to look back at history though, now and then.
Wow I never watched her at the beginning, here she's much more monotonous (than she still is)
Back when she was funny ... and not pretending to know about cakes or Vets... Yawn
Bernard Manning let himself go.
I just watched a Live at the Apollo episode with Jo Brand from 2018. She wasn’t funny in 1987 and she isn’t now. ....and you KNOW IT.
Russell Howard was also on Live at the Apollo too - he’s about as funny as skin cancer also.
Unless you've got nothing better to watch then why bother watching her then?
boring
She wasn't funny then, and she certainly isn't funny now.
Just as funny as she is now. ie Not at all.
Not at all funny.
crap
crap
