      The remake is a complete upgrade over the original, my only complaint is that a few of the tracks in the game are slightly worse than the original, but even then, that's just subjective. They did an excellent job remaking the game and adding new content and tons of quality of life improvements, I'm always surprised by a neat little addition or easter egg added by the developers that just makes it feel so much more complete than the original, stuff like the fast forward button, massively improved map editor, customizable difficulty, turn resetting, and more, all added in the remake. Fantastic game, and would 100% recommend buying to anyone who's played the originals or anybody remotely interested in strategy games.

    • @bon7029

      Played them all, beat them all.
      Reboot Camp is a VERY faithful remake of the first 2 games. Not PERFECT remakes, but faithful. Some of the dialogue got changed, but they're changes for the better.
      Yellow Comet is now Gold comet, which rolls off the tongue better to me.
      Andy is still dumb as a rock.
      They went the extra mile to make Clone Andy his own character, even though no one would have questioned it if they didn't.
      The Quality of Life features, like being able to move and attack in the same command, being able to reset your turn, and being able to replay campaign maps without restarted the campaign, and being able to go back and completing the missed maps after you finish the campaign are all solid.
      From my experience, they did nothing to change the balance of the game, nor did they do anything to change the maps or the enemy AI from the original games, though I WOULD like to see DLC that gives the option for a smarter AI for tougher games vs the computer.
      I never did try the casual campaign because I prefer a challenge, but an easier campaign is good for getting newer players into the game without overwhelming them.

      @DPG - Dale Plays Games sort of. In this one, it knows you're there except forests and shoals. In the old games, it not only one you were there, but could attack without actually "seeing" the unit beforehand, instead of the surprise stop that running into fogged units does

      Reboot camp isn't actually an exception, and it will know the locations of your units after they attack (though obviously this is only truly cheating with indirects), but it's a lot less egregious than some of the past games, and basically just cheats to emulate object permanence and deductive reasoning.

    • @QwertyCaesar
      @QwertyCaesar Před rokem +1

      The AI is actually excellent at Fog of War. It's really smart. For example, if the AI sees your unit retreat into the fog then it won't know where the unit is but if it sees the unit retreat into woods or a reef where the paths out of it are exposed then the AI knows that your unit is in that tile and will expose it to attack it.

    Great review! One small nitpick, though is that activating CO powers have nothing do do with luck. For both you and the CPU it's charged by losing units and, to a lesser extent, damaging enemy units. Doing a big push will charge up you opponent's CO power for a counter-offensive, so sometimes it pays to hold back and wait for the right moment to strike

The player (or AI) that has units being damaged gains CO power at about 4x what the one doing the damage gets, which allows the loser access to more CO powers to help them push back.
      Of course, Some COs are just better than others. Honestly, even if this remake hadn't been made with so much love, I'd have been happy with it just for being able to help bring attention to this series to so many new players. Much like the also-recently-rereleased Mega Man Battle Network series, Advance Wars was a phenomenal and innovative GBA series that endures to this day with an active competitive scene, and with such an incredibly solid core that it stands the test of time. Though my favourite will always be Dual Strike, which wasn't included in this reboot, my hope is that this proves an interest in the series still exists and it revitalizes the franchise.

The characters are amazingly expressive, the soundtrack is incredible, and the ultimate show of how much WayForward cared is there's even remixes of some Famicom Wars and Super Famicom Wars songs, the extremely obscure Japan-only predecessors to the GBA games! Glad to seem more people singing this game's praises.

Glad to see this getting positive attention, it scratches an itch in a way that a certain other turn-based RPG on the Switch released this year most certainly did not.

    A lot of things are way better even regarding gameplay. here's a few :
    1) In the original games, the AI didn't had infinite vision in fog of war, only forests and reef would effectively hide units, the AI now works properly and you can deprive it of vision like a normal player. this is actually a good way to win some of the missions
    2) Some changes have been made to the tutorials, though we still can't skip them AND they are really forced tutorial, it's "okay" for 7 years old, but any person with basic knowledge of how turn-based strategic games works will find it tedious.
    3) Audio rework, and this is a big one, EVERY THEME has a variation for : standard, under power/superpower, in menu, in battle, AND when in battle animation, you can actually hear the theme of the other CO blending in with yours. The idea that the CO theme are just war chants blasting throught the tanks speaker kind of make me happy in the wars world universe.
    4) The voicing is only partial, a bit sad, but mostly good, thought I felt some voice didn't really matched with the character.

It must have been the fact that the release date got pushed an entire year due to the Russo-Ukrainian war, but this game is *SO. WELL. MADE* the animations and character design tones down the *war* aspect in the sensible period we're living, the music is very WayForward (catchy af and iconic) and the AI has been improved tremendously. I'm glad you had fun with it, but as a fan of the original the terrible art style really ruins it for me. I wish they had gone with HD 2D pixel art instead.

    • @dale_dpg
      @dale_dpg  Před rokem

      I think I would have preferred that too, or some really unusual style we’ve never seen before. Nintendo will probably never commission something like that though. However, I didn’t think the “toy” art style was terrible, but not amazing either. The animated scenes were nice!

    While i think the cartoony style the units have is unique, it does come off as kind of boring. The CO's animation and art is amazing and the board/units are such a let down. That aside I am so happy AW is getting recognition and I hope we get more and hopefully a new game?? Exciting time to be an Advance Wars fan.

      I'm not a fan of the change of art style they did either. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if they initially had the slightly more realistic one from the original games, and then retooled it to lessen the chance of potentially being offensive because of the Ukraine-Russia conflict and it was another eason for the delay. But then again I remember hearing these were all locked up in warehouses somewhere so maybe not. 🤔

    I think you have promise as a reviewer but I really can't stand it when people use the word "addictive" to describe satisfying or compelling gameplay. Not only is it inaccurate, but it's also lazy writing. We should all use better words describe what makes the gameplay compelling. This is my hill and I'm prepared to die on it.

    The gameplay is classic, but there are a lot of graphical decisions that tick me off.. like the grid on the playing field and the "box" map. Also they made Nell less sexy than OG Nell. A lot of changes that just urk me.

    • @dale_dpg
      @dale_dpg  Před rokem +3

      Asthetic changes are the biggest irk for a lot of people it seems. I’m glad the gameplay is fun. Perhaps if WayForward build upon this in a new game they can take more risks with aesthetics. Thanks for watching!

    I hope they release a DLC expansion that adds Dual Strike to the game with the new COs, units and the CO Switches.
    And if you want an Advance Wars with a serious plot, that's what Days of Ruin is for. It has a much darker and more mature plot than the original three games.

    The nitpicks I have with this game are them changing out the Super CO power music, the artstyle for the units making it hard to tell which units from which at times, and it would've been cool to get a different animation during Super CO instead of the same thing but with gold.
    commentor: The Super CO is on factory missions.
    Me: Why not all the time? It was like that in the original so that's not good enough for me. That music is so uplifting and encouraging when you pop it.

      Oh man, I guess I’m lucky I haven’t played the original? A lot of commenters are lamenting what didn’t make the jump from GBA to Switch. I guess I should play it to compare. Thanks for watching!

      @@dale_dpg Indeed, once you hear it in it's original form you will see why I'm so adamant about it.
      Also CO power building is based on damaging units from both sides not on Luck, luck is the dumb variable where you have the chance to do another point of damage or less, the CO Nell and Flak both use the Luck system more than the others but I never liked the Luck system

      Now that I’ve digested the game a lot more all these months later, I partially agree.
      While I’ve not played the original so I have no real basis for comparison, other CZcams content I’ve engaged with since highlights the problems you mention.
      I stand by that Re-Boot Camp is a fun game for AW newbies, but I can totally see why legacy fans wouldn’t like it.
      I still believe there are a lot of positives in Re-Boot Camp, such as character design, animated cut scenes, music, voice acting and fun missions.
      I hope the franchise gets another chance someday, but it’s unlikely.
