    A very apt tribute video, to feature your colleague's father's watch.
    It's not too ostentatious for a gold-plated dress watch, something that he could and presumably did wear all the time. It's fortunate that whatever the water ingress into the stem was, it didn't get any further.

    Hi Mike,
    I really loved this video for so many reasons. I make the same mistake with the keyless all the time-forgetting the order of things and having to redo the work. It’s always good for a laugh.
    But the part about remembering our loved ones-I hope it is comforting knowing your parents are with our Lord and continue to be proud of all your accomplishments. Deeply personal items like watches are among the only things left behind by our loved ones that we can continue to connect with on a daily basis. Good on you for getting this running again, and I bet the owner is thrilled with the job you’ve done.
    Wishing you the best,

All I would say is make time to see yours, return the missed calls etc. get them to tell you their history, people in photos etc. My father wrote his biography right up to leaving the RAF and then it stops! he never wrote about any of us. I always said I would film my parents and do an interview with them given their poor start in life sadly never got around to it and it would have been nice to preserve that history in video format for future generations.

    Very sorry to hear about the passing of your parents Michael. I'd love you to try and repair a watch I have. I haven't worn it for years. It's my favourite watch of all time. I took it to a jeweller who couldn't help. Basically the crown has become detached from the rod. I live near Wigan in Lancashire.

    Hi Mike that stem extender how's that effect the crown washer? and also why don't they make them out of stainless steel ? and why leave threads when they make watches smooth sides will make a better seal I've so many questions about stems lol
    Andy.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  Před 24 dny +1

      I can’t answer your questions. Stem extenders are just that they extend to so have enough thread. The join does not interfere with the setting lever and fits fine in the pendant tube. Extenders are stainless and many / all modern stems are stainless. Just occasionally and luckily some are not and you can save crowns. I had this on an omega years ago , replacement crown was £50 bit with alum I could rust out the old metal stem

    Hi Mike, Sorry to hear about your parents, I'm sure they'll have been very proud of you. I found your channel because I recently lost my father and amongst some of the things he left me was a Seiko watch. That got me into watching videos on Seiko's and I came across your channel and now I'm addicted, I've binged watched hours and hours. Unfortunately the watch wont fit around my wrist and the correct strap doesn't seem to be available anymore and fitting a generic strap onto it just wouldn't seem right somehow. Thank you for the content.

      Thank you for watching so much. You can get what are called bracelet extenders which are cheap and might give you enough length to make it fix

    Hi Mike,
    I have missed something when looking your videos so a question : why don’t you oil the pallet fork jewels ?
    Also how do you put the stem back in place ? I’m currently trying my best on a Cupillard 233 which is indeed very similar and I’m puzzled with the how to put the stem back in place after casing ?
    Thank you for your time and constant generosity…

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  Před 4 dny +1

      I usually fixadrop the stones and oil off camera. I’ve filmed them enough times and it’s almost impossible to film and to correctly.
      To be honest it makes no difference to the running and if you over do it or get oil on the top of a stone you will see a very poor trace on the TG.
      Oiling pallets will only extend a service life rather than give you better amplitude. They are so easy to make a mess of as you are supposed to oil in situ through the viewing holes in the main plate provided.
      As for a stem I can’t remember on this one but if they don’t push all the way in then you need to push in and hold the stem release to then push home . Your basically lifting up the setting lever so the stem can locate properly

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  Před 25 dny

      I don’t have that but do have another rust remover. I was concerned as it tends to turn things black so didn’t know what it would do to the mainplate so tried these other methods before just getting all medieval on it with pliers !

    That's a real stunner, Mike. Sorry to hear about your parents. So often couples pass on closely together, as if called to reunite in the next life, if you believe in that sort of thing. I know of one case where the couple died within hours of each other and had a double funeral. But you know, broken heart syndrome is a real medical condition that changes the shape of the heart, making it less efficient. It's an incredible thing to think about, loving someone so much you're physically linked to them in that way.

    I agree, colored movements are fun to work on. I actually just serviced a movado 395 kingmatic i have in my collection and it turns out the entire movement is silver plated which is... unusual. you would think they wouldent use silver because of the fact it corrodes but it was so pretty after cleaning. I have a watch with a felsa early auto movement (felsa 1560) which has an early rose gold plating that has worn to that bronze color in a few places. Also sorry about your losses. It always sucks loosing a family member.

    That's a pretty grand pedigree the Garrard has. I'd say it's perfectly reasonable to preserve the crown as you did. I will never understand why there is typically no motivation to at least try to replace them with identical ones even in meticulous restorations. For some reason, one crown is considered as good as any other. About your parents, you and I are very lucky guys because our parents lived similarly long lives and were lovely people we will always miss. That's as good as it gets in this highly imperfect world. All the same, I'm sorry you're having to go through that very sad time.

      I feel I am very fortunate to have had the parents I did. They came from nothing during the war and did well for themselves. Pleased I got 51 years with them.
      I was pleased I saved the crown despite the work it can take. you are right its usually a forgotten component that can be swapped generically. I certainly wanted to preserve this one as best i could.
