- The Berlin Derby sees East Berlin side Union face West Berlin rivals Hertha in the Bundesliga for the first time in history. The two teams were once bound by friendship, despite being divided by the Berlin Wall. But thirty years after the Wall came down, Union are suddenly challenging their established neighbours for the capital city crown. The friendship is long gone; only rivalry remains.

Worked in Berlin for six months a couple of years ago, watched both teams play. Loved Union Berlin; the ground, atmosphere and history is special. Could've done without the -17C cold though.

there's an electronic scoreboard opposite the home end.
you have to respect that Hertha BSC plays in a stadium with about 55.000 more seats than Union a comparison is not really fair.

Just to clarify the things you can read at 2:04 and 2:06 :
The "Hard Skin" and "Skinheads Union Berlin" do NOT have the same meaning as what we might think of today.
The skinhead movement in Germany at that time was an offshoot of the Punk movement, which was HUGE in Germany, and particularly in Berlin, both East and West.
Those skinheads were mostly anarchists or radical libertarians, absolutely unrelated, and more often than not fighting with the extreme right.
The fact that the shaved head + bombers + rangers attire has nowadays become synonymous with neo-nazis is one of those twisted ironies of History.

It's just two citys in the same state. Nothing special about it. These two clubs were torn apart by history and are same clubs for same city.
There is nothing interesting about Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. They are 80km away from eachother.

I’d argue that a rivalry between the two clubs is essential to the overall competition of the Bundeslega. In other European countries the derby between the capital city clubs is huge. Games between clubs like Liverpool arsenal, Tottenham Chelsea are huge. Lazio and Roma are almost on a completely different level. The whole idea of being champions of the capital of the nation for some of those clubs is as big as winning the league. Roma and Lazio might not being winning the sire a each year but they’ll make it a challenge especially against the bigger clubs because of the pride they have in their city and club. Plus having former East German clubs getting some kind of attention because of such rivalries could help those clubs become more successful and therefore make that nation as in this regard German soccer more competitive.
Liverpool and arsenal?
I don't get that. Arsenal is London, and Liverpool is Liverpool.
Arsenal can have cityderbys with Chelsea, Tottenham, Watford, Chrystal Palace, Fulham, West Ham. But not with Liverpool.
Liverpool has its derbys with Everton, and you can also count Manchester City/United to it.

Spent a week in Berlin last year for the Berlin marathon and the day before the 42km run we got to run in the friendship run from Shloss Charlottenburg to Olympiastadion. Next time I'm in Berlin I have to attend one of these matches.

Bengalos are the best during a football match
The only reason it got so fierce after having a Short friendship is Herthas Ultras Scene.
They got close to BFC Dynamo's Scene and with that also partly Magdeburg. With BFC Dynamo being the hated rivals of Union Berlin and pretty hated across the country.
BFC was the Club of the Secret Police of the GDR and Union being anti-stasi and anti Establishment in all. So there's literally No reason for a Club to Like BFC, except They've been the Most successful eastern Club at the Point.
That's really the only reason why the Clubs started to Go apart. And that's stupid.
After the Derby Hertha got fairly unpopular with many Fans around the country. Just because the behavior of their fans, well that one or two ultra groups.
All could've been avoided if they would've stayed away from BFC Dynamo. But success and bigger Fanbase at the time might've been more important for them than a actual good Club with Heart
They just fight together in the forest, representing Berlin. On the stands there's no connection.

Just the Same with the BFC fucks at Magdeburg when Union played there or when Magdeburg was at Union. None of your Ultras did anything against it. They even got them Tickets to come in.
Hertha's Scene has the big Problem that They've got No identity really. And it didn't Help them to be this isolated Cluj throughout the time of seperation from West Germany.
Union on the other Hand was the working class Club newly founded based on a older local Club for people who were against the gdr Establishment. You know that BFC was the stasis child and basically the bullies of many Clubs. Especially the local hated enemies, Union.
After reunification Hertha and Union seemed to be quite close. But that faded away and their Ultras, once established, contacted the BFC hools instead. There wouldn't be a Connection to Magdeburg in any way If it wasn't because of the BFC Connection.
I wouldn't Go as far to say that there's a friendship. I'd probably only say close Connections of some Ultras and the other Ultras Just watching from a distance.
