- Pio of Pietrelcina (Italian: Pio da Pietrelcina), O.F.M. Cap. commonly known as Padre Pio, (May 25, 1887 - September 23, 1968) was a friar, priest, stigmatist and mystic of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. Padre Pio became famous for bearing the stigmata for most of his life. This condition generated much interest and controversy around him. He is now venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.
Pio was born Francesco Forgione, and given the name of Pius (Italian: Pio) when he joined the Capuchins. After his beatification in 1999, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002.

He was said to communicate with angels and worked favors and healings before they were requested of him.[45] The reports of supernatural phenomena surrounding Padre Pio attracted fame and legend. The Vatican was initially skeptical.
In the 1999 book, Padre Pio: The Wonder Worker, a segment by Irish priest Malachy Gerard Carroll describes the story of Gemma de Giorgi, a Sicilian girl whose blindness was believed to have been cured during a visit to Padre Pio.[46] Gemma, who was brought to San Giovanni Rotondo in 1947 by her grandmother, was born without pupils. During her trip to see Padre Pio, the little girl began to see objects, including a steamboat and the sea.[46][47] Gemma's grandmother did not believe the child had been healed. After Gemma forgot to ask Padre Pio for grace during her confession, her grandmother implored the priest to ask God to restore her sight.[46] Padre Pio told her, "The child must not weep and neither must you for the child sees and you know she sees."[46] Oculists were unable to determine how she gained vision.
Padre Pio believed the love of God is inseparable from suffering, and that suffering all things for the sake of God is the way for the soul to reach God. He felt that his soul was lost in a chaotic maze, plunged into total desolation, as if he were in the deepest pit of hell.

Fr. Gabriele Amorth, senior exorcist of Vatican City, stated in an interview that Padre Pio was able to distinguish between real apparitions of Jesus, Mary and the saints and the illusions created by the devil, by carefully analysing the state of his mind and the feelings produced in him during the apparitions. In one of Padre Pio's letters, he states that he remained patient in the midst of his trials because of his firm belief that Jesus, Mary, his guardian angel, St. Joseph, and St. Francis were always with him and helped him [48] During his period of spiritual suffering, his followers believe that Padre Pio was attacked by the devil, both physically and spiritually.[14] His followers also believe that the devil used diabolical tricks in order to increase Padre Pio's torments. These included apparitions as an "angel of light" and the alteration or destruction of letters to and from his spiritual directors. Padre Augustine confirmed this when he said:
The Devil appeared as young girls that danced naked without any clothes on, as Christ Crucified, as a young friend of the friars, as the Spiritual Father or as the Provincial Father; as Pope Pius X, a Guardian Angel, as St. Francis and as Our Lady.[48]
Now, twenty-two days have passed since Jesus allowed the devils to vent their anger on me. My Father, my whole body is bruised from the beatings that I have received to the present time by our enemies. Several times, they have even torn off my shirt so that they could strike my exposed flesh.[48]
Padre Pio reported engaging in physical combat with Satan and his minions, similar to incidents described concerning St. John Vianney, from which he was said to have sustained extensive bruising. On the day of Padre Pio's death, mystic and Servant of God Maria Esperanza de Bianchini from Venezuela reported that he appeared to her in a vision and said, "I have come to say good-bye. My time has come. It is your turn." Her husband saw his wife's face transfigured into that of Padre Pio. On the following day, they learned that Padre Pio had died. Witnesses say they later saw Esperanza levitating during Mass and engaging in bilocation.] Padre Domenico da Cese, a fellow Capuchin stigmatist, reported that on Sunday, September 22, 1968, he saw Padre Pio kneeling in prayer before the Holy Face of Manoppello, although it was known that Padre Pio had not left his room.
I am Catholic but I moved away from it, had many doubts, until one night I had a spiritual awakening, I always wondered why so many had faith, now I know, without a doubt God Bless you Padre Pio. Amen

Padre Pio was the saint that my grandmother was praying to when I had experienced a near death experience in July of 2014. When my surgery took place, I felt like I was out of my body. When I looked around, I saw a bright light, and it belonged to Padre Pio. I said to him that I wasn't expecting him to show up. In other words, I was surprised. He also looked like his prime years and not like how he looked when he passed away. It felt like when a parent comes to help their children in their time of need. I also said to him that I wished I had met him on better circumstances despite the fact that God can easily take in me in second if He wanted to. When I said that, he just smiled, and he was listening to me the whole time but never spoke. I felt like I was being watched over by him the whole time while the surgery was going on for two hours. But while being with Padre Pio, it felt like eternity, but I didn't mind. I felt peaceful and full of life than I ever did before. By the time I woke up from the surgery, he was already gone, but I knew he was still keeping an eye on me. When you go through something like that, it's God's way of saying He ain't done with you yet or it is not your time yet. Whenever I think about it, I usually say God was still renovating up there in heaven, and He is not ready for me yet. But I can wait patiently until the time comes when He calls. I know our Lord knows I am going to joke about that experience, but that is how He made me. Even He has a sense of humor it's the reason why we have it. He knows us more than we know ourselves. That's why I don't try to hide anything from Him since nothing is hidden from Him. I would be the idiot if I tried to hide it. In his life, Padre Pio, whenever he did the sacrament of confession, he would already know your sins and say them before you did. He would also mention the sins that you hid or didn't say. He even did confessions for hours to give a ton of people a chance to go to that sacrament. He also heard the confession of a young polish priest, and he told him that one day he would become the next Pope. That Pope was John Paul II, who later on became a saint long after his death.
Years later I realized why he even came I said the prayer that you say that asks Padre Pio to be a spiritual father to you and become one of his spiritual children way back before this near death experience happened. When you are one of them, he also takes in the family of any of his many spiritual children. I know that he won't enter heaven until all of his spiritual children have passed through the gates of heaven since he made a pact with God. That is quite some devotion. Padre Pio also says, "Pray ,hope and don't worry." He is the reason why, after a year after my near death experience, I do the chaplet of St. Gertrude twice to release the souls from purgatory and the chaplet of St. Michael, every day since the middle of 2015. I still do them both still to this day since I promised to keep doing them until the day I am gone. I am eternally grateful for Padre Pio for what he did for me, and because of our Lord, I am still here stronger than I was before and cherishes life more than I did before. Even though I have post cholecystectomy syndrome in my case permanently, it reminds me of what I went through, including Padre Pio, who also said, "Suffering is a gift from God Blessed is he who knows how to profit from it."

I am a Catholic and I can tell you with all certainty that there is no directive from our church leaders to worship images, statues or corpses of saints. The salvation work of God did not stop with the apostles or the new testament. Jesus continues to chose people to remind us to nurture our faith in Him and He uses these chosen few to manifest His miracles. One of them is Padre Pio. Having his body displayed like that, or having a crucifix, or images of the saints or the Blessed Virgin Mary does not mean that we are worshiping these bodies or things. We use these as symbols to remind us of the life these people led and to inspire us to do the same. If you have a photo of a loved one who has departed and you keep that with you at all times or close to you, or a locket or necklace given to you by a deceased parent, you are not replacing them with these objects. You just want something to remember them by. It's the same thing. There is also nothing wrong with asking for the intercession of saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray for us and ask Jesus to grant our intentions or prayers. We are merely asking these saints or the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray for us to Jesus. There is nothing wrong with that. When people came to St. Peter and St. Paul for healing in the new testament, these individuals were not asking them to use their power to heal them. They were asking the apostles or disciples of Christ to pray to Jesus so that they maybe cured. That is an example of an intercession. We catholics believe that these saints though they have departed from this life, can intercede for the living to pray for our intentions in the next life. Finally, there are indeed cases of misconduct of some of our priests. I for one do not condone it. But you cannot judge the entire catholic church on the mistakes of a few. There are still many priests who like Padre Pio, lived as Christ did. Since the Catholic Church is a human institution, there will always be imperfections and mistakes. Even Jesus Christ rebuked his apostles whenever they did something wrong. But Jesus still chose them to carry out His mission inspite of their imperfections. Please don't judge our church based on the mistakes of a few priests. Try to read up on the life of the saints including St. Pio who is a catholic priest and a modern day saint. You will see that God uses the Catholic Church through its priests and members to proclaim the message of salvation to All.

The Bible nowhere instructs believers in Christ to pray to anyone other than God. The Bible nowhere encourages, or even mentions, believers asking individuals in heaven for their prayers. Why, then, do many Catholics pray to Mary and/or the saints, or request their prayers? Catholics view Mary and the saints as "intercessors" before God. They believe that a saint, who is glorified in Heaven, has more "direct access" to God than we do. Therefore, if a saint delivers a prayer to God, it is more effective than us praying to God directly. This concept is blatantly unbiblical. Hebrews 4:16 tells us that we, believers here on earth, can "approach the throne of grace with confidence."
First Timothy 2:5 declares, "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." There is no one else that can mediate with God for us. If Jesus is the ONLY mediator, that indicates Mary and the saints cannot be mediators. They cannot mediate our prayer requests to God. Further, the Bible tells us that Jesus Christ Himself is interceding for us before the Father: "Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them" (Hebrews 7:25). With Jesus Himself interceding for us, why would we need Mary or the saints to intercede for us? Whom would God listen to more closely than His Son? Romans 8:26-27 describes the Holy Spirit interceding for us. With the 2nd and 3rd members of the Trinity already interceding for us before the Father in heaven, what possible need could there be to have Mary or the saints interceding for us?

I was a Catholic. but not anymore. This miracle is the result of pure Unconditional Love that Jesus taught us to have. Padre was filled with Love and therefore is preserved forever. Many years ago, my then girlfriend, now my wife,, was seriously ill in hospital with septicemia, she had been there for just over a week when one night just out of the blue, a gentleman entered her room and told her that he was drawn to her room, and as far as I'm aware he didn't have any other business at the hospital, but he had with him padre pio's mit, and he laid the MIT on top of her, prayed, and left, the next day my girlfriend was much better, 48 hrs later she was released from hospital feeling fine, believe me when I tell you that before this man came to her room with that mit, she was all but a corpse, I found out later that this gentleman was going around the sick all over Ireland with saint padre pio's mit, when she asked me who padre pio was,?, and told me about all of this, I shuddered, I think with fear mostly, because although I am a Catholic, she isn't, but hey,! She turned out to be the biggest fan of padre pio ever,!, thank you saint padre pio for saving my wife's life, my god bless and take care of you.

I'm not a Catholic but I'm a Christian, and I believe that my connection with God is not through religion but my faith in Him. Whenever something happened to me, I thank Him first second the person involved to channel His goodness to me, like Doctors whenever I feel sick, police when I'm in danger, family and friends when I'm in trouble. I don't pray to saints like Padre Pio 'cause I don't know if he even watch me from heaven but I know that God is with me since I surrender myself to Him and accepted Him as my savior. I'm not saying you should not pray to saints like him but having strong connection with God is much better, this is what I believe.

Cool !! I was just there. Flew to Rome. Took train from Rome to Foggia. Then took taxi from Foggia to Padre Pios. Yes I saw his body. I love the 2 older churches. Also I visited Saint Michael's cave in Monte Sant Angelo !! Take taxi from Pios to Michaels.
