  • 3rd June is Uganda Martyr's day, and for some, this evokes memories of Mwanga II, the reigning Kabaka of Buganda between 1884 and 1899.
    For those who look at Mwanga through the eyes of the Uganda Martyrs, he is seen as a cold and ruthless pre-colonial African monarch, for his order to execute several youths for their faith in Christianity.
    But to Prof Samwiri Lwanga Lunyiigo, Mwanga was really more concerned at the turbulent changes that were threatening to tear the Buganda Kingdom apart.
