Aarrgghhhh...you beat me to it!! I too miss Alan dearly & I certainly don't consider it a mere coincidence that my two all-time favourite DM albums - "Violator" & "SOFAD" - were his last two with them...he wasn't just a brilliant musician & an incredible producer but he was also a great 'look' for the band & simply as cool as fuck, IMO...& when you combined Alan with Dave, the greatest frontman in the world (again, in my humble opinion) & Martin, a high-quality songwriter & a very handy backing vocalist (I must confess that I've never much enjoyed any of their more 'gentle' songs, for which he was the lead vocalist) & musician in his own right, they were fucking WOW!! PS. But I must confess that I've always been disappointed in/surprised by how little I've enjoyed all of Alan's work with his own, post-DM project, Recoil - which I was 100% sure was going to provide me with the greatest electronic music ever produced & thus relegate the likes of New Order, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk & the Pet Shop Boys, within my rather sizeable CD collection, to 'second-string' in comparison...but nope, t'was not to be, sadly...
No Wilder, no massive world-wide hit, it would never have become the eternal pop classic that it has become. That would have been a tragedy as it is, even in this demo state, a beautiful song.
Yep. I get that you want to leave them wanting more and all that. But this is honestly one of those songs that's never long enough. It could go for half an hour and it would be wonderful. And that would be a lovely transition...
yes it is but if it wasn’t for Alan’s dance tune it wouldn’t have turned into one of the greatest and most listened songs to the masses. but i agree they should’ve had this version maybe at the end of the album.

This is a DEMO! It is what it is. It's not meant to be elaborate. Most rock musicians put together a demo and go from there. DM has done quite well without Wilder in their production.
What was really beautiful over the time, was this "ping pong" between them, indeed rarely see in a project 2 genius persons, beside maybe The Beatles... but now lets hear also this demo: czcams.com/video/nyUYUn8U5Ow/video.html I love Alan as much but let's be 100% honest, in this demo and also the one for "here is the house" and "lie to me" shows clearly the melodic lines where totally written by Martin, in these 3 cases actually everything was done by him beside mix/production lets keep the "balance right" ;)
plutostube he’s the writer for sure. And yes the main melodies are his, but I a,ways thought Wilder deserved to be given credit too. Royalties should have gone to both.
@@vjreimedia you obviously never read Alan's comments about PSB and Erasure :) He also talks a lot about the difficulties of being a producer and how much of the job involves politics and personalities, rather than 'making music'. This is one reason why Alan continues to largely work alone.

Martin is great songwriter, Alan is great musician and all the wonderful songs couldn't exist without both of them. And Dave is good frontman. Martin is technicaly better singer (in my opinion) and I really love songs sung by him....but Dave's voice is something like band's brand.
I'm not sure what makes you say that Martin is a "better singer" They are both good singers, but the "machine gun vibrato" Martin has shows a lack of control.
Well said. I saw an interview where Alan Wilder clearly stated that he had no interest in song writing; he prefers to arrange songs. And he did just that so well with Martin Gores fantastic songs. It is a pity DM has not found a replacement for Wilder. From Exciter and on, with a possible exception of Playing the Angel, I feel the songs could have been so much better with the right arrangements and energy.
My grandmother died yesterday. This particular version of the song hits me differently now. It speaks to how I feel right now. I know my friends mean well, and want to comfort me, but I don't wanna hear "I'm so sorry" or "How are you?" over and over again. I just want to enjoy the silence.
This song is amazingly beautiful. The band could easily do this demo version live. Just an organ and Martin singing. A little bit different to the album version.
@@strychnyne3530 Yeah. Alan was the guy behind the sound of Depeche at that time. Martin wrote the songs yeah but Alan did most of the work in the studio. And he wasnt the addictional person like Martin and Dave. When Dave and Martin was away and doing their "things" Alan was working. I think that was the thing who made him jump of the train. He got tired of it all.
I can't understand why people think hey have to take a side, Wilder or Gore, first if Martin wouldn't have written and take the first step when it comes to composing a song, Alan couldn't have done his part, but without him , I think, DM wouldn't have made it in late 80s- early 90s, no consolidation, no characteristic s o u n d, the band wouldn't have last in those important former years.
But without the demo, Martin's demo, Alan wouldn't have made this song as well as the rest as we know them. The music is also Martin's.
