- Gyrus Waker of Corpses is a jund value hydra engine. This toolbox commander lets you pull creatures straight out of your graveyard. Some people, myself included, bemoaned the fact that Gyrus forces you to exile the creatures and only get them for your combat phase. I have grown to see this as an advantage. I don't want to loop Kokusho or Grey Merchant over and over. I want variety in my combat, in my win conditions, and in my colors. Enjoy!
I have tested this deck for a while and some notable shoutouts that performed really well but did not get screen time is: the explore mechanic and Thought Gorger. I realized that I needed more card draw and these helped smooth everything out.

Arcdemon44 putting Meren in a jund deck is just a no no on a flavour though....

I think this boi us sliding into Vaevictis vs helming my new Jund deck, but dang he does look fun! Given how I'm aiming for a 90ish% Primal Surge deck for Vaevictis, this guy will have plenty of targets still in that deck.

I like that you said that it's not about being better, but being different. I'm excited about it. I can only play my Meren deck but so many times. I switch it up now and then, like right now I'm using a saproling subtheme, but sometimes you just want to try something different.

Here's a thought: You're running more than enough ETBs to warrant a Panharmonicon, and if you throw n a Riftsweeper, you can get your creatures out of exile.

That riftsweeper basically made my friends hate my Gyrus hydra deck.
Pretty sure you're wrong about Doubling Season + Gyrus here. Season acts as an effect modifier, the original effect is still putting in the extra tokens. Those extra tokens should still be tapped and attacking and exiled at end of turn.

If you have a way to Populate at instant speed on the other hand, you'd get to keep those token copies.
The counters put on him are a replacement effect so it wont trigger with doubling season, i think it's that. I may be wrong.

Doubling Season doubles counters no matter what type of effect puts them there, so it will double the counters Gyrus comes in with. The only time it doesn't double the counters is if putting the counters on are part of a cost, not an effect. Namely planeswalker loyalty abilities and Devoted Druid.

Great vid. Couple recommendations, but maybe this is because my vision for this commander is higher power dudes. Xenogoes to increase commander power, thus allowing you grab bigger things, and grant haste when cheaty boots isn't out. Also, Sutured ghoul. Filling up the grave then exiling a ton of big dudes and come in with trample. Oh it sounds so good.

Probably the commander I’m most looking forward to brewing with from the Jund deck; it’s like a Prossh Hydra! Lol
One card I would suggest adding to the deck would be Riftsweeper, as it is an option for potentially getting back exiled creatures, otherwise, sweet deck tech.
TheyCallMeReaper yeah no love for the old ways. Riftsweeper is a must. I would include too a dowsing shaman to fetch them enchantments from the graveyard. And some sort of protection to permanents like Soul of new phyrexia (you can get it back later with riftsweeper)

Very nice tech. Gyrus is an interesting creature to build around, and is one of my favorites from C18... Sadly, I think that there are not a lot of good new cards, but this hydra is one of the few.

Been looking forward to this video since you appeared on Command Zone the other day. I think one card that you're missing is Muldrotha. To get back your enchantments or artifacts that have been destroyed or milled will make this a lot more consistent.

Because a lot of your creatures usefulness comes from ETB's, and the fact that you want to copy tokens, I'd like you to recommend a card I love called Feed The Pack. It works especially well with Hydras too, for if Gyrus ever gets pacified, or you want to upgrade him the turn after.

Ooze Flux might be fun, You can make x/x ooze creatures out of all the counters on Gyrus and even kill it if you want to cast it later for a higher cost.
I have a gruul hydra tribal deck, but since I saw this card I've been tempted to make it Jund because Gyrus just seems awesome.
One card I also love is Deadbridge Chant. Reanimation and putting stuff in the grave for Gyrus? Sign me up!
Looks like a sweet deck. I would go with Purphoros, God of the forge, Xenagos, God of Revels, Kalonian Hydra and Panharmanicon for a little more flavor and power in the deck. With all those ETB triggers Panharmanicon would be soooo good.
Ghoulcaller Gisa and Ashnods Alter could set up a pretty good sac combo to make Gyrus huge

What you said about doubling season is only kinda true , due to the fact it says an effect doubling season does make a tapped attacking token that gets exiled but primal vigor does not because it's worded different

I think you also want a bunch of bigger stuff. you're in green, so you'll have plenty of ramp, especially when you recur some of your ramp creatures. Put in like a Hellkite Tyrant or Giant Adephage. Also, have a look at Shisato, Whispering Hunter.
What about Grave Betrayal just to take creatures that are destroyed on the opponents field as a way to stop them from reviving those until they destroy them again?
Death's presence maybe? Make your commander either continually get bigger by main phase 2 using a sac outlet to kill your token and feed gyrus, or ensure that the power he (or any other big creatures) has stays relevant if he gets killed.

Regarding Doubling Season: You don't get to keep the second token, it's an exact copy. Doubling Season essentially replaces the word "a" with "two" on the attack trigger. Populate would have worked though, since it's a separate effect.

Riftsweeper (1G 2/2 from Future Sight) can be a good inclusion for this deck to get usable creatures from exile to recur with Gyrus.
Corrections: Riftsweeper gets a face-up exiled card and shuffles it into its owner's library.

I really love your channel (a lot :) ) will u please do a decktech with either tuvasa or estrid which is value enchantress and not just auras. i have been wanting to build an enchantress deck for a long time and i think you could do something simmilar like you did with the merfolk and goblins duel decks upgrading specific areas of a deck. I Know these deck techs take a lot of time but it would mean a lot. xx

I would substitute Phyrexian Delver for Body Snatcher. Body Snatcher is a 2BB 2/2 creature from Urza's Destiny with "When Body Snatcher enters the battlefield, exile it unless you discard a creature card." and "When Body Snatcher dies, exile Body Snatcher and return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield."
Since we are deliberately exiling our creatures, perhaps Living Wish as a way to get additional uses out of our exiled creatures?

I really like this card, but why do I want a little more unf in him (Like Giving him Trample, Menace, and/or instead of exiling the token sacrifice it), but He's a Jund card I really like. I hope for more! ^^
How do you feel about including other value sac outlets besides Birthing Pod in the deck? My thought is chances are the majority of tokens being made will be getting exiled anyways, so I'm considering including cards like Viscera Seer, Disciple of Griselbrand and Flesh Carver. Oh and did I forget to mention Viscera Seer?? Lol it's still early to tell but are these worth including in your opinion?
Oh, if it's not too much an ask, might I be able to put a request in for a Yennett deck tech over the next month? I saw her today and.....my interest was piqued. Top-deck shenanigans? A way to play stuff for free (in black, my fav color, vs usually temur)? AND literally an odd restriction for deck-building? I'm in! Would love to see your thoughts as well, but will wait patiently. 😀
What about Kalonian Hydra? That has 0 power and will attack for 8, as well as doubling the amount of +1/+1 counters on Gyrus.
If you are refering to making a token of it it doesnt work. The token would already be tapped and attacking. trigger would be missed BUT if you just PLAY Kalonian Hydra and swing then yes you can stack the triggers how you like and double them.

You said that tokens duplicated by doubling season wouldnt be attacking nor be exiled at end of turn. But form what I researched this is not the case, the token duplicates are the exact same, they attack and get exiled too.

If you can get its power high enough, desolation twins maybe? With doubling season you can make 6 10/10s. (I might be high and math could be a weaker skill of mine, so feel free to correct me).

I just had an idea. What if you had doubling season and riftsweeper? If you exiled riftsweeper, made 2 copies, could you return riftsweeper and another card, since the ETB effects go on the stack after Gyrus? Interesting piece of tech there

Just made mine! My deck is more slow, people think im doin nothing. Then suddenly i throw out a xenegos and hit a dude for a kill, then fling it for a secound kill. Im just having a bunch of etb removal to keep the bord on the same lvl until i get something to just instantly kill them. Neheb, rakdos or the gruul/golgari dragons to get a ton of mana and then get warstrum surge and cast the commander for a ton of damage, gg.
Can you make one with the new ninja commander? I would love to see that one

I saw other people pointing out that Doubling Season and friends doesn't work as explained.
Now let me present what really work like discribed:
Second Harvest & Druid's Deliverance
Instant speed is important becasue you need the two cards in your battle phase (Horncaller's Chant won't do it)
Now the real trick we create a token that actually works as explained while the doubling season tokens will be exiled as well. But if we use Second Harvest while we created a temporal token of a card like Eternal Witness we'll get our second Harvest Back and keep a Eternal Witness Token.
Now we can play Second Harvest as long as we have 4 mana and double our token over and over while also returning our Instant & Sorcery cards to keep control over the match.
But this won't mean we need to forgett about Doubling Season and Friends. If Doubling Season is out we'll get two Token copies that get exiled, while two stay on the battlefield for the next turn.
Doubling Season and friends only work as another Panharmonicon like effect for this deck while also granting another strong beater.
The deck basically works as if we have Mimic Vat as Commander but need to get our Trostani out of our deck (altough this case we sadly miss out on all those white spells). But by gaining Black we can easily tutor up the Combo with Final Parting by putting Eternal Witness in the Graveyard and Second Harvest in our Hand.
If we want to go really crazy like Infinity Eternal Witnesses: Add Mana Echos & Gemstone Array.
In the End every other card that care about counters, token, mana ramp and have strong enter the battlefield effect can still be in the Deck.
When Gyrus attacks, does he copy the creature that has a smaller power than his or does he copy the creature that has the least power in the graveyard ????
I saw a card that could be busted in this deck; upwelling. The card is busted because of how it is x mana oriented, by storing up the mana like crazy you will have a commander that is basically an endless one. With upwelling; ssg, altar, dark ritual, seething song and nykthos shrine to nyx and you have mass mana generation. Add blood sun and play lotus fields like it’s black lotus in edh!

How can i send you my list? We both have very similar ideas but execution is way different. Ive already tested the 99 with Kresh at the helm smashing through both oloro and zur pillowforts but lost to thrumming rats (sad day) without being able to return any creatures the deck went ham and seeing as this is what im most stoked for id like to brain storm a few things becuse i think you missed other potential with Gyrus.
Tokens that ETB from creatures like seige gang commander and paired with efftes like perpheros.
Should have included Bathor the Defiled in this deck tech.

Huh, I guess this depends on if they are going dragon body or snake body style. I have seen it go both ways but in magic it seems like they mostly have legs. Interesting ... Real Hydras and Marvel's Hydra ... well, they are just weird.

Miles Gloriosus doubling season only doubles the counters, you will not get to keep the extra token.
I actually don't know. I don't think it can since I have so many other effects that aren't creatures in that deck ... Maybe?
Is it because Gyrus' ability ends at the end of COMBAT that sundial would work? My understanding of the wording on Gyrus is that Sundial would only end the trigger at the end of your combat, but would trigger again at the end of your opponent's combat step. Wouldn't it have to be worded "exiled at the end of this combat step" or maybe "exiled at the end of the next combat step"? I suppose the token would stay if you either sacked or flickered Gyrus... but that doesn't seem very practical. Just to clarify, I'm not entirely sure on this point, and if I'm very wrong then I apologize... any comments to clarify this matter would be really appreciated!!
Sundial ends the turn and all effects. You must do it after damage has been dealt but before combat ends and you will keep the token forever. The exile clause is not an ability of the token so it will not be brought up again.

Unfortunately you are incorrect about the doubling season interaction with the commander because the doubling is a replacement effect. This is the same interaction doubling season has with myriad.
If you were to populate the tokens, or use Rhys to copy the tokens once they are on the battlefield, then they wouldnt go away, but the replacement effect means that it does copy the state of the token including tapped and attacking, and the exile delayed trigger.

You could not use master of cruelties because the mtg rule states that if a card has an effect or abilty that you have to do and can not do you can not do it at all. So in turn it has to attack alone so you couldn't use gyrus effect to bring it back attacking because the rule states that if it can't be done you can't do it.
