I used to like watching Siskel and Ebert as a kid, but I never cared about what they said, I just liked when they argued. I loved Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. It's a classic in my opinion, and a must watch for anyone who likes satire.

Martin mouthing off to Joan Crawford and insulting Bogart ("Wear a tie for God's sake;" "Are you wearing a tie?") was hilarious, as was the general dialogue ("Women tear out your heart, stick it in an oven and cook the shit out of it"). Great comedy.

The reviewers really got this one wrong. Quite apart from anything else, they failed to recognise the GENIUS involved in creating a story using names and places from the old clips, which were completely disparate.
I saw this in my late teens, and having watched the classic stars in many films, knew who they were and just how amazing this film was in terms of technique and absurdist comedy. Another of those films whose script is stuck in my head forever.
    Bogart - "You annoy me"
Martin - "I annoy you? You come in here with no tie....have you been drinking?"
Bogart - "I had a couple of Martinis...I knew I was going to see you!"
"That gives me exactly four hours to wash and press your pyjamas"
"I don't think I'm going to need pyjamas where I'm going..."
    "Whatta guy!"
    "Could I be your.....reinemachefrau?"
    "Julie he's a nazi!! Don't beg a nazi!"
Out of context, not that funny. But within the film it's just hilarious. Absolutely love this film.

Back in 1982, before the VHS culture, we didn't know ANY of the classic 40's, quote, "late night" movies being clipped, and the movie was just judged against a hundred other lame Maltese-Falcon spoofs we'd gotten in the mid-70's.
Watching it thirty years later, now that we're a little more familiar with Classic 40's Movies, it's a lot funnier...Context. :)

This was a very good movie. Better than what S & E woukd have you think. Its a comedy spoof so therefore you're not meant to care so much if the plot doesnt resolve perfectly. Keep in mind,Tge Big Sleep is a quasi-masterpiece and yet no one including the writer can follow the storyline after 30 mins.

When i saw this as a teenager, i wasnt aware of steve martin. I thought that would be an old timey-movie, letting it play in the background.. when Rigby "adjusted her breasts", i was glued to the screen, wondering about the tone of this detective-movie.. until i realised it was a b/w comedy NOT from the 40`s... i was such a dimwitted youngster. But it was one of the best comedy-experiences in my life! (Steves early movies "like the jerk" were the most hilarious things ever - what a genius)
