In my family we used to do "house exchanges" with families abroad. It requires no additional cost, resources, infrastructure/services, meant we could exchange with them info about local activities and public transport, interact with the neighbors, know our home is in good hands when we're away and it anchored us in a place, meaning we were taking our time to deeply explore the area instead of jumping around. And the generosity and mutual trust aspect of this really warms your heart.
Hi Gittemary! I love your impact series. Could you possibly do an impact video on perfumes? I love perfumes but I recently realised that perfumes might not be the best for the planet. However I hardly see anyone talking about its environmental impact. If I have a better idea of what the environmental impact of fragrances are, I will be able to use perfumes more sensibly! (Or not use at all) xx

I'm from Dubrovnik. Other than thing that you mentioned, many local people moved out of the city so they can rent their houses and apartments or just because crowds are too much to handle. We also have problem with sewage because there are too many hotels and that is polluting the Adriatc sea for which Croatia is very well known for. It's sad to see how negatively tourism impacts nature and people too. People are so exhausted through touristic season and don't have time to be with their families. Also, tourist don't know how to behave, they mostly think that they are entitled to do anything because they are paying to stay in the city. I hope that in the future we will see more restrictions for the better.
She mentions over 500 Ships in 2016 and now "only 2 ships per day" are allowed. Doesn't that mean that there are over 700 of them allowed each year? Can you clarify that?
@@leamariakiehlmeier2985 ships come during tourist season so from April until October (including), they come 2 times a week and only 2 ships can come in that one day

I loved your note about golf courses being awful! Even before I was more aware about the resources they use, I wasn't a fan because in my home town, a golf course had taken up about half of the local common (a historical English thing, whereby a big piece of land was available for locals to use to graze animals etc., now mostly like a wild country park). If you've not already done so, a video about the impact of golf courses or other landscape-based sports - including things like grouse moors, ski resorts - would be great, because I think often people assume that they are not so bad because they appear to be "natural".
being from miami, we see tourism A LOT, and as locals, we're noticing a horrific spike in housing prices forcing so many people out and the more touristic areas becoming so commercialized. we used to have such a nice and unique local culture but it's gotten to be so diluted in the last few years. yet, here they love tourism because it's the pretty much what makes up our economy
As someone who is passionate about travel and truly feels like it has helped me to grow as an individual, I really appreciate this video and all these tips! I definitely already do many of these things (the good ones) and am always open to learning and trying more tactics for making my trips more sustainable! 💚
So happy you included Dubrovnik! 🇭🇷❤️ :) But its not just Dubrovnik, its almost every bigger city on the Croatian coast and it gets so crowded in those small narrow streets
1st one :) When I travel I like to stay with locals via couchsurfing and the websites TrustRoots and BeWelcome. There are also hidden gems in cities which are sometimes not listed in the usual travel guide, the website where all these gems can be found is Atlas Obscura. I'm not someone who likes to cover all the touristy things or goes through souvenir shops. I prefer to walk around flea markets or charity shops in other cities/countries and would get a small item from there to remember my trips. Next year I would love to start with Trusted Housesitting and use that for accommodation and most importantly be around the hosts' animals like cats, dogs, sheep or whatever :)
I haven't had a vacation in so long so doing my part but not by choice hahahaha

Just because local guides know the environment better, doesn't necessarily mean that their guiding you preserves nature better. These people, often, are also stuck in a system that in and of itself destroys nature by generating revenue through it. But I guess it's sometimes hard to tell whether a tour truly is sustainable.
Lol yeah. In the carribean I went with a local guide and he was the one picking plants everywhere for us to taste and took us off trail and past "protected nature park do not enter" signs.
And in Canada we stayed at a small campsite which was run by a lovely local guy who lived there in his trailer. But he told me we could make a fire if we wanted (even though there was a drought and a province wide fire ban). And he told us to pick oysters from the local beach if we wanted. When we walked to the beach it had a huge sign saying stuff along the lines of: " forbidden to pick oysters. The natural resources of this area belong to a first nations tribe."
I think the tip for going with local guides is more useful as a way to support the locals and the economy, rather than global corporations who run the hotels or whatever. If they're telling you to do unsustainable things you can still chose not to do it.

Make a staycation, try to find out about interesting things in your home area, including concerts with music from all around the world performed by people who live in your home region but maybe came from another country initially. Try new food, learn something new about the history of your region or the nature close by.
I visited Venice between two cough lockdowns and it was incredible: no tourists, empty waters and I could even jog in the city center 😍. It was surprisingly accessible by train since the city center is car free anyway!
I did the same! It was amazing. Super cheap apartment in the middle of venice (50€/night for a 2 bedroom, like what!?). And it was so quiet and beautiful.

If you just get used to walking about 30 miles a day, then you can discover way more about the people that you visit by doing so. Motorized transmission has made us so lazy.
I haven’t traveled since the pandemic but Hope that all those little shops in the airport sell more sustainable options. I never saw anything but single use plastic wrapped snacks/ toiletries.

Thinking for European history, pilgrimages. That included more common people and goes further back in time.
As someone who travels a bit for wildlife, particularly ocean wildlife since I scuba dive, there are some things to look for when trying to determine sustainability.
1. Certifications obviously.
2. For any tours where you go in the water, the sustainable tours often mention sunscreen. Whilst the impact of sunscreen on coral reefs has been largely exaggerated- the concentrations required for the damage observed in lab studies is unrealistic and increased ocean temps and pollution runoff from nearby factories and mining are much bigger issues - a lot of the more sustainable tours will mention it, and I think there are some cases where they prohibit sunscreen because of it being an irritant to the animals.
3. They might mention using a boat without a propeller.
4. A main page on their website dedicated to sustainability or at minimum a section on their about page.
5. Mention that the tour includes educational content and mention of conservation education. Potentially partnerships with researchers.
Red flags:
1. Guaranteed sightings. It is fine if they can say there's a 90% chance of a sightings or similar but if they have a money back guarantee, especially for sharks, this may indicate that they provide food or chum the water. This is not good as it may lead animals to associate boats with food --> increased shark attacks, increased risk of getting killed by commercial fishing vessels and shipping trawlers etc, or alter migration patterns.
2. The complete absence of the considerations above.
3. If they encourage touching/ holding wild animals.
After working in a souvenir shop, I think they should be avoided entirely. Even if you manage to find something handmade the artist gets very little of the money and the companies that run them are awful. You can buy from an independent shop, directly from the artist, or even find something in a pawn or thrift shop.
If and when I use airbnb, I try to choose simply a free room in an apartment that the renter is living in.

The 8% of global emissions value from the research paper referenced by the article calculates an almost comedic uncertainty of 7%, meaning they estimate the global emissions from tourism can be as low as just 1%.
I love this video! Sadly a lot of vegan restaurants (not all) are actually just super trendy Instagram bait locations and not based on our regional cuisine here in Portugal at all. So I would say if you come to Lisbon please eat at a local tasca instead of running around town looking for a trendy vegan restaurant that is probably using avocados shipped from Mexico. You can probably find a lovely veggie soup and bread at any tasca. I really appreciated your tips and ideas here!
I hear what your saying, but for many vegan travelers a veggie soup and bread isn’t an adequate meal (for some it may be great😊). Additionally shipping is actually a very small percentage of food’s footprint. I would say ideally support vegan local biz or local biz with good vegan options.
Hi! Is there typical Portuguese food that does not include fish? I am asking because, being Italian and vegetarian, whenever I visit any coastal location here I find it difficult as a vegetarian to find restaurants that offer one complete meal (by complete I mean not just a salad) without fish or meat, unless it is a pizzeria.
@@myericaby I can understand why seafood would be the main cuisine of any coastal country. Portuguese restaurants that focus on vegetarian or vegan food but don't abandon authenticity include Quinta do Arneiro , a farm restaurant in Mafra that uses veggies from their farm for all of the dishes or A Praca Sintra in Sintra. I can highly recommend both. The fresh food is amazing in Portugal! We have incredible organic farms, small markets, and farmer's markets that are only organic with locally grown produce. You are really missing out if you choose to eat avocado toast at a cafe that is filled with plastic plants and looks like any vegan cafe from anywhere in the world:) Vegan recipes are even taught in our pastry schools. Just get curious and ask politely.
Our bread is amazing as are our olives. You can eat bread, olives, veggie soup, peixinhos da Horta, (might have eggs) arroz do coentras at any local tasca. Or go to the bio market and cook at home.
@@helenapflaum6800 Avocados in general have a huge carbon footprint and serious labor issues in and outside of Portugal. I hear you. But I don't understand why people travel, only to look for the same food they eat at home.These types of cafes have ruined Lisbon. There are some Portuguese chefs and cafe owners doing really interesting veggie and vegan things. We have incredible vegetables here and organic farmer's markets. I recommend going there and cooking at home. Focus on vegetables instead of the label vegan and you will probably find some lovely things:) Shipping in processed vegan food and wiping out local culture are also issues. I respect people's will to go vegan but I don't respect when they come to town and cry and complain about not finding vegan food in an old world country with a traditional cuisine.
Venice is actually working against overcrowding. As of 2023 you will have to buy an entry ticket of aprox. 5 Euros to enter Venice and they are limited daily tickets. People staying in a hotel in venice are excluded, but there are already limited rooms to stay in😊
Bravo Gittemary!!! I was expecting this video and it was worth to wait! As a neighbour in an overcrowded airbnb neighbourhood I thank you and applause you. Tourists queuing in a trendy cafetería while the next door there's this association gathering food donations for the needy people of the neighbourhood... It just doesn't make any sense!

Hi Gittemary! How do you handle visiting small locations and finding vegan food? As a vegetarian, in my experience the smaller the place, the harder it is to find food with no meat or fish. Whenever I travel to coastal locations here in Italy I find it difficult to find restaurants that offer one proper meal (by proper I mean not just a salad or bread) without fish or meat, unless it is pizza. I visited Ireland recently and I basically lived out of potatoes and desserts for five days because that's what I found in pubs on the road. It's fine to eat a bit trashy for few days, but not for longer vacations.
I research ahead of time if there are any restaurants that have vegetarian or vegan offerings and review their menus to make sure it's not just "pasta with tomato sauce" type stuff. I think Gitte uses the Happy Cow app.
I also find it helpful to look for a grocer. I'll buy high protein foods that i can use to fill up, and then when i go out to eat, i feel okay if the meal is not the most balanced
I felt like I had a fancy multi-course meal while watching this! I've learned so much. I've heard about places banning visitors to protect it, and think it's great! I just wish they would do it before the damage occurs. My parents just came back from a trip and gifted me with a few locally made items that I love because they are beautiful and support the community they visited.

Does doing little acts like picking up trash as you go about your rought have much of an impact? Do you have a video on the impact of picking up trash, because to me it kind of seems like we are "cleaning up" by shuving it in a pile under our bed or in our closet, though I understand how it protects wildlife and other species. Great video! CARRY AROUND A REFILLABLE WATER BOTTLE, extra weight thus more resistance thus bigger muscles thus less plastic waste thus never parched!

They government is cracking down on Airbnb in Ontario. They've upped the fees for registering and renewals. If the owner doesn't live in the home, they have to pay taxes as a hotel would pay. We have a lack of affordable and available housing. In the city I live in, we have approximately 300 homeless people. Our low barrier shelter has 22 beds available. We don't have alot of warming centres so the homeless are sleeping outside. Some have tents but then residents complain about them. The Ontario provincial government is trying to improve the situation but it's a slow process. Our temperatures have been as low as -26C with the windchill so far and can be alot worse. It was recently reported in the newspaper that our average rents in Canada are $2000 Cdn. That's for a 2 bedroom. One bedrooms are on average $1700. With the upsurge in Airbnb, we have a severe shortage of housing available. And the money isn't going back into the community. With covid and the insane number of people trying to get out of the big cities, our lower housing prices appealed to them. Alot of properties were purchased by non locals. Our housing prices are finally dropping. There is no firm plan to help the homeless. I think there should be a cap on the number of Airbnbs allowed in a city. And maybe some residency rules for their owners.

I come from a tourist town in the United States and we need people to visit us or our businesses die. But we have the airbnb effect, it is so bad we had to have a town meeting about how the locals have no where to live that’s affordable (because people from rich cities keep buying the houses!). Still waiting to see what was done at the meeting.

I love travelling. I grew up going to Europe and the Middle East, and the Caribbeans/Central America. I want to visit every possible country. I would love to explore Asia. But when I travel, I make sure I keep my good habits and make sure to buy local stuff. I don't plan on stopping to explore the world. But I want to do it sustainably 🌏🌎🌍

Be a tourist in your home town/ local area! Get to know where you love from a different perspective and avoid travel emissions bc you're already very close

Good informative video but what about skipping air or cruise ship travel altogether? See your local areas and support the local economy instead. If you want low impact, that's the way to go! Remember, air travel is often a 'want' not a 'need'. If our real desire is to save the planet then it is going to take sacrifice on everyone's part everyday to do it.

I do a lot of research before I travel and prefer to go during the off season just to avoid the crowds. I love taking the train, exploring local charity shops, and eating local is my favorite. I can eat fast food when I'm home. I have tried different cuisines and things that I probably wouldn't ever get in the US. I enjoy traveling to places that are off the beaten path. #winning

Is there any alternative to AirBnb more then hotels and hostels that are sustainable when you are on vacation?
I like to host people on BeWelcome and TrustRoots, basically the same like the former non-profit organisation Couchsurfing.
Choose Airbnb's that are owned by individuals vs a corporation. You can usually tell by their profile and how many they are operating.
I always look for hosts who have only one rental if possible, ideally part of a main house where they live, like a converted garage
Was the Grand Tour predominantly (if not exclusively) gone on by men though ? I've never seen or read anything about women going on their Grand Tour...

Yes the majority of the people that went in the Grand Tour were men. There are some drawings and paintings that suggest that women did accompany the travelling men, but to what extend I don’t know 😅

But aren’t normal planes technically a kind of public transportation? Of course for short travels they aren’t a necessity at all and I do avoid them, but for longer travels they are actually necessary.
The question we should all ask ourselves is probably if the longer travel is necessary in the first place. Look at the co2 impact of a long-distance flight and compare it to the kilometres/ miles a car needs to drive to have the same impact . It's shocking.
I think it's also about the reason why you need to travel such a long distance. Long distance flights are important for families, long distance couples or friends that live on different continents for example and I also think it can be a great intercultural experience if you travel overseas for a longer period. But if you just want to stay in an all inclusive hotel or do some shopping and stay for a short period you can also do this much closer to your home (at last from a western european perspective). With the pandemic we also saw that business travel often can be substituted by online meetings
No. It is not at all public transportatiin un-less it is priced in a range anyone can afford.
Are those long travels nessecary?
A lot of the times when people state that they are... they really are'nt. It's fun and games that could have happened much closer to home.
Like a classic European; "I'm going yo Thailsnd for a beach vacation"... well, you could have gone to the Canaries, Greece or somewhere else, much cloeer than half the planet away.
@@louiseerbslisbjerg7854 I completely agree with you, but sometimes people argue that ordinary public transportation is also not affordable for many people. Also, I don't think we should take the possibility away from people to see places that are so far away. Yes, going to Thailand exclusively for a beach vacation is a terrible idea, but I don't see anything wrong with a tourist that wants to visit Bangkok.
