  • Britain's riots "worse than 2011"; they've shown "multiculturalism has its limits"; Elon Musk has behaved "utterly irresponsibly . I am really shocked": Former Editor, Financial Times, Lionel Barber, to Karan Thapar for The Wire.
    ...........................................
One of Britain’s most respected senior journalists and the former Editor of one of the world’s most highly regarded newspapers, The Financial Times, has said that the present riots in Britain, which have continued for eight consecutive days, are “more serious than 2011”, adding that we are likely to see more rioting today or in the days to come. Lionel Barber says the riots have shown that “multiculturalism has its limits”, agreeing that in Britain, despite having had prime ministers, home secretaries, foreign secretaries and chancellors of exchequer of Asian or black origin, multiculturalism is not as successful as people sometimes think.
In a particularly forceful critique, Mr. Barber said Elon Musk, who has been amplifying hate-filled messages by the former leader of the English Defence League known as Tommy Robinson and claiming that Britain could be at the brink of civil war, has behaved “utterly irresponsibly”, adding “I am really shocked by his behaviour”.
In the interview to The Wire, Mr. Barber says that the decision of Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to treat people who whip up hate on social media the same as physical rioters is a significant “rhetorical shift” in Britain’s traditional attitude which has always been in support of free speech. Mr. Barber also says that any steps Britain might take to act toughly against platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Telegram and TikTok would also be a new departure for the country.
I am only giving you the main points made by Mr. Barber. There’s a lot more in this 30-minute interview which I will leave you to see for yourself. It’s an in-depth discussion and analysis of the riots, the cause or causes behind them, the role of social media, the response of the British government to the way social media is proliferating hate speech and, in addition, the whole issue of integration and multiculturalism and the extent to which multiculturalism is successful or its limitations are now being shown up.

Elon is entitled to an opinion an opinion I agree with and have been saying for 2 decades once you have a 2 tier police force , uncheck mass immigration, literally the country is being invaded , then the worse problem the never ending downward decline of the economy . Then it gets worse the government is not listening to the people , I can't see any other outcome other than civil war . I hope I am wrong

It looks like Britain does not want to become an Islamic nation but wants to remain a secular nation. Secular laws can be against any religion including Islam. For example, in a secular nation people can criticize any religion or religious figures. But the problem with some religions is that they don't allow criticism of their religion or religious figures or prophets. Thus, they deny the freedom to critically examine their religion and its founder/s and practitioners too. Thus, free, liberal, democratic Western civilization and secular societies are being affected now by radical Islam and thus their policies are being revised. Migrants to other nations must need to be able to fit in with the cultural values of those nations otherwise better not to migrate to them. Thank you

UK Govt should first ACCEPT that some people are not happy with large migration (which is making them insecure) and they should find a way to
    1. Create awareness of legal and illegal routes and explain why the legal route is important for the UK
    2. Show serious action to reduce the illegal route
    3. Give confidence that they don't have to be insecure because of the immigration

YOU may want the government to gatekeep and curate every iota of information you get to see and hear, and YOU may want the same people to choose what you may be allowed to say. But not EVERYONE feels the same as you about that!
Musk is one of the few remaining people to resist government tyranny over what the public can say snd read, and you think he's the bad guy???

I'm a regular person. I have ZERO power to pushback on the state. Millions of people have thoughts about unfairness similar to mine.
The MSM media have largely abdicated their duty to push back on our overlords.
Musk is one of the few remaining people with clout willing to stand up to leaders, giving voice to what millions of us, though clearly not you, are concerned about.
You want to take that powerful voice away from us, you want the powerful to do as they wish with token pushback. I disagree with you. We need more musks willing to represent the disenfranchised, not less.
