I love Junji Ito, but I don’t get the dread with this one. Just don’t go in the hole. Who cares if it’s shaped exactly like you! Heck! It being shaped exactly like me would make me want to explore it even less.
It’s a metaphor for becoming unrecognizable over oneself, the girl feels guilty for her own isolation and loneliness, the protagonist feels guilt because he failed to save her, in the past it was used as punishment for criminals guilty of crimes
The message of this story is don't be a reincarnated criminal.
Can't forget about the exits at the end of the tunnels that are humanoid stretched versions of the hole entrance
