Just to show the other naughty side to the Queen - at Charles and Camilla's wedding party she had to make a speech but no-one could see her so she climbed onto a table and did it there. Her sense of humor is one of the reasons she's loved so much.

@@TheGarryq - I just watched a clip a few days ago of Stephen Fry on QI telling that story. He likes to spin a good yarn but I really want that one to be true because it's such a brilliant story. The other one is Giles Brandreth (another bon mot who tells a good story) who spent a short while in a senior role in the Treasury and claims to have been counter-signing a cheque with the Queen for £36 billion and said to her, "Which one of us, Ma'am, do you think the Government doesn't entirely trust?!" Her answer is not reported.

When I was young, the cinemas used to play the national anthem at the end of every film show. As the credits began to roll, you would make a bolt for the exit, but if the first bars started to play before you'd made it through the doors, you'd have to stand to attention till it finished. I doubt anyone would do that now!

I remember thsoe days so well. But now - heading through my 8th decade - I know just how lucky we
are to live in a country that can allow that sort of thing and not feel threatened. And I'm sure that HM
would smile serenely, knowing the real value and purpose of her role. Long live The Queen!

    • @marycarver1542

When I was young, presumably before YOU, no one rushed out. At the end of the film
everyone stood respectfully while it was played. We also said prayers at school every morning
and sang the national anthem on special occasions. We were also given Union Jacks and
marched in lines around the playground on St. Georges Day ! I think there has been a quite
deliberate attempt to dampen our patriotism. It is still there when roused, but for how long now ?

If you want to be moved, listen to Benjamin Britten's version - makes you reflect on never knowing anyone as monarch other than The Queen. You'd need to be in your late 70s to remember singing 'God Save The King'.

I just flipped across and watched that, now I have a lump in my throat and tearful eyes. What a great lady. Hitler once described The Queen Mother as the most dangerous woman in the world. A reference to the fact that she was such a support to King George VI that this country's moral throughout the second world war was unshakable.

It might have already been mentioned, but it’s also the national anthem to New Zealand, and the Royal anthem in all the commonwealth countries. Litchenstein also use the same tune, but different lyrics. It’s also known as ‘God Save the King’ when the UK has a male monarch. The song dates from 1745 and is both British and American! In the 1930’s when the USA chose ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ as it’s national anthem, it very nearly chose ‘My County ‘Tis of Thee’ which uses the same tune! So we could have had matching national anthems!

Not sure if you're aware JPS but the American National Anthem is actually a very old British Drinking Song! So not only does it compare or rival your National Anthem; by sheer being and provenance, it knocks yours out of the park lol. Just saying. A very proud Brit! Just teasing darlin. Thank you for being respectful to us. You're a gentleman.

Thank you very much, you’re the sort of person who will always be welcomed in this country.

Interesting fact: only 20% of the UK population were born before the Queen's reign, basically hardly any of us can remember having a King. When she passes away i will be so strange in lots of ways including changing the anthem because it's so linked to her personally more than to the institution itself. Joel also had post on I Vow to Thee My Country and this was suggested as an alternative anthem. I'm not in favour of change for the sake of it but maybe it would be appropriate to have an anthem for the nation itself (or England, as Scotland and Wales have their own) and keep GSTQ for the UK overall and/or use it as a sort of monarch's anthem - like Hail to the Chief in the USA is used for the president.

@@jilla.1246 "In the interests of unity", when will it be "the right moment" to have that discussion?
Oh yes... "never", apparently. This is why we're still stuck in a country that thinks Old Etonians make the best Prime Ministers.
The moment Betty Brenda pegs out, we should start having that discussion, and Charles can rule over whatever's left a year later.

Thee ruby in the Queen's crown once belonged to the Black Prince."The Black Prince's Ruby is actually a glowing red uncut spinel which has been owned by the British Royal Family since 1367. The gem was named after the 'Black Prince', Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales, and is one of the oldest of gems included in the Royal Collection of Crown Jewels. It currently sits in the cross pattee at the front of the Imperial State Crown, just above the Lesser Star of Africa, also known as The Cullinan II, one the largest polished diamonds in the world.
Fine red spinel is actually considered to be rarer than ruby in occurrence and can often be even more valuable. The Black Prince's Ruby is the one of the world's largest uncut red spinel gems, with an estimated weight of 170 carats and a length of almost 5 centimeters. The Black Prince's Ruby is slightly polished to bring out its luster and has been worked into a bead shape. It was previously drilled, strung and worn as a pendant and various other forms of jewelry before being placed in the Imperial Crown where it can be seen today. Through close observation, it can be seen that the small drilled hole has been plugged with a smaller ruby." I hope you found this interessting.

Love this. And yes, you are a gentleman and a credit to your family!
A friend and I gave concerts (violin and guitar) in Churches all over the South-East of the US some years back. At the start of the concert we would play both national anthems, UK then US. Everyone stood and displayed a profound and totally unaffected respect for both. But when they all joined with the Star Spangled Banner it was just wonderful. A genuinely moving and emotional experience every time. I love being English and after years of travelling wouldn't want to live anywhere else. But I love the US and the Americans I have met very much too.
Thank you for deepening the special bond between our nations with your lovely videos. May God bless you and the USA and the UK!

There are five or six verses of the complete anthem - most people know the first verse, a few people know the last verse (the second in the video). The others contain lines about confounding knavish tricks and avoiding the assassin's blow and scattering our enemies.
It's going to be very weird when the Queen inevitable dies (hopefully not for years yet), and it becomes God Save the King again.
