This is an affordable option for the Fuji 16mm f1.4. I sold my 16/1.4 because it couldn’t compete with the cheaper and more portable 18mm f2. And after the 16mm f2.8 was released there was no way I could justify the money just to get that f1.4 aperture. Enter the Viltrox 13mm f1.4. It might not be as sharp (my guess), but its wider and less than half the price. Perfect for a specialized lens that in my case wouldn’t get much use.

Being a hobbyist photographer, I don't have a large budget for camera gear. I have the Viltrox 33mm and it's been a fantastic nifty 50 and I do not regret the purchase. I really do think Fuji needs to step up it up a bit because I feel there is a big market for non-professional photographers that seem to miss. The Viltrox 13mm is one I am definitely interested in, I have been looking for something wider for more landscape work.

Was waiting for this lens. But had my heart set on the 16 1.4, with its 24m equivalent focal length being quite familiar. Managed to get the 16 1.4 for a great price used. Really enjoy it, especially the handling with the manual focus clutch. It's only slightly chunky, in between the handling of the 16-80 and 18-55. It feels fine on my X-E3 with wood hand grip. The close focus distance of the 16 1.4 is quite useful. Even if you don't think you'd use it that much, the lens just begs to be used in an experimental way.
The Viltrox 13 1.4 on the other hand brings something new to the Fuji lens line up. Great to see! Thanks for the quick review Mattias!

Great stuff. I have to say I got excited when I first heard of the 13mm f1.4 from Viltrox because I kinda want a wide angle lens but don't want to spend a lot. The only Viltrox I have at the moment is the 56mm f1.4 which I am really happy with, so I think this will have to be the next purchase.

Matt thank you for your review and your insight on this new lens. you always put things into perspective to what really matters. that is what I value most from your channel. Personally I'm a big fan of Fuji film X series cameras and their lenses. Am also a huge fan of Viltrox and what they've been doing with their lenses. I own the 23mm, 56mm, and the 85mm. I also own many Fujifilm lenses. My current favorites are the 16mm F2.8 and the 27mm F2.8rwr. Theis13mm might be a little wide for my taste and my style. Regardless, I feel when when a third party releases a good lens everyone benefits including the camera OEM but most importantly the end user.

If you stick to landscapes and maybe don't need the 1.4, the Fuji 14mm 2.8 is also excellent and can be had used for about the same price. It's also a little smaller and worked well on my X-T30. I love though that we're getting quality AF options and this definitely forces Fuji to keep making great lenses. Can't wait to see what Tamron can bring to the ecosystem too!

I'd love to see this compared to the new Rokinon 12mm f2.0 AF. I know they are slightly different but fast wide angle primes for around the same price. Does the added size of 1.4 make it worth it over the much more compact 12mm?

I used to sport the Fuji 16mm f1.4, but it had a noisy and slowAF motor which drove me nuts for video. I sold that and bought the new 18mm f1.4. As my ultra wide option I got the Fuji 8-16mm f2.8 because I got tired of waiting for the Viltrox 13mm f1.4. I don’t think I’ll need to buy the Viltrox 13mm now unless I want it as a prime for gimbal work.

Viltrox 13mm f/1.4 sounds fast, wide and cheap. Which used to be a singularity as you could only ever pick two.
I shoot on 14mm on MFT for like 97% of all the shots I take. But the tiny lens is also really slow. I am getting a 6mm Laowa lens once they ship it to Europe - which will be even wider but it's not going to give me some of the shallow depth of field

traded my 10-24mm for the viltrox 23, 35 and 85, they're not fuji glass... but unless you're pixel peeping they're amazing lenses and punch way above their price class! especially the 23mm Viltrox is just a fantastic lens! Any thoughts on the Fuji 14 2.8? Small, super wide and fairly large aperture...hard to find a lot of reviews in the video department, or even more recent reviews - say, within the last 1 to 2 years. I don't own one, and am really intrigued by it - this Viltrox seems nice, but it looks bigger and heavier than the Fuji 10-24, which I use often for real estate stills and video.

Great Viltrox provide us with options, on this one for me the extra 2 f stops on a wide angle isn't enough to swing it over the much more compact and quality Fuji 14mm f2.8. I think it's one of their best value lenses on the used market since the introduction of the two 16mm options. The Viltrox 85mm Mk II is the one that has always tempted me value/usage wise compared to the Fuji 90mm. Nice review as always Mattias.

@@antoniostuppia900 it's obvious that it's more difficult to make a compact wide angle fast full frame equivalent lens for a smaller sensor.
It's because it's a 13mm f1.4 lens and that would be large, no two ways around it. Just because of the smaller sensor it'll be similar to a 20mm f1.8 lens. The DOF will be 1.5 times deeper, the noise will be 1.5 times worse(varies) and angle of view will be 1.5 times tighter.
