I could not control my tears at the end. watching this as a Muslim, when you face constant judgment, and hate - your ego tells you to harden so that you can protect yourself. But bibi and her husband didn’t! This documentary showed me the importance of kindness, and how that one act saved the community & him. Kindness should be given freely always.

I worked with Dr. B at a long term care facility in Yorktown for 6 years. He is a amazing man and has an incredible family. I never knew any of this before. Sad but beautiful story!!!!

Mac's 25 years as a marine with all the killing and destruction that involved ,why wasn't he looked after by the military when he got injured physically and emotionally ,the coping mechanism of "just see them as a paper target" was chilling, how many veterans are going through similar trauma? , Muslim ,Christian, atheist, agnostic etc ,we all need love and kindness as Mac found in the nick of time , this film needs to be seen by everyone.
It's an unfortunately really common story with vets. I wound up in rehab a few years ago, and it turned out to be _the_ rehab the military sends a lot of its people to. Heard some really harrowing stories of marines who watched their friends get blown apart next to them and wound up with bad alcohol problems due to the PTSD. Also used to be friends with a community of homeless vets who served in Vietnam, a lot of them are dead now. For all the rhetoric we drum up about supporting our troops, we do a really horrible job.
How do we expect to train people to turn off all emotion and become killing machines, and then just flip the switch again to return to civilian life? All vets need ongoing assistance to recapture a sense of normalcy. I heard that the fraternal-type organization like VFW are shrinking because they don't appeal to younger vets. Perhaps this place of gathering is something missing for our vets today.
Vets in our country are under-served. They need and deserve much better (and more timely) medical and psychological help. They need to be taken care of until they are healthy, both mentally and physically. Also, other kinds of care, such as vocational, financial advice, etc.
It shouldn't be this easy to send people out to kill others. The investment needs to be made to make the people whole again (if possible) when they return.
Watching this caused me to do some thinking about some of the dark thoughts I've had about Muslims
over the years. Reevaluation, reconsideration. Thank you.

His story is incredible! I was there when they started filming this documentary and heard his story! I live in Muncie now because I attend university there, and I love our community and the people of Munice. I am so happy to be a small part of this story and the community.

I live in London, Ontario where a Muslim family was run down and murdered nearly 2 years ago. I have experienced a lot of Islamophobia and am sadly not alone. I live right down the road in Stratford Ontario and was absolutely horrified when that poor family was run down.
During a BLM event, I was involved in a near hit when a driver was angry about being held up while our group crossed an intersection. I’ll never forget the hate in his eyes. It changed me, made me fearful. I’m sorry for the hate you have experienced. You have a friend in me.

Pretty amazing story. I am not muslim, and really had very little knowledge or interaction until I visited a family member who had temporarily moved to Oman to teach. We toured around, and one of the most profound things was how we could enter a mosque (really as sightseeing, which in hindsight seems ignorant, how would most christians feel about ‘sightseeing non-christians entering a church’), and how open and welcoming they were. It blew my mind. When you met a stranger, they would invite you to their house for tea or a meal. So hearing how he was welcomed… wasn’t actually as shocking. So happy to have come across this.

Such a powerful story. This is something that should be shown in schools to provide students the opportunity to confront hatred and prejudice that is so common in our soiciety.
I’ve had such a strong distaste towards Muslims ever since the wars and 9/11… I feel so stupid for buying into the bull crap I saw online and in the news, this story has done more for me than anyone will ever understand .
There is a beautiful surah in the Qur'an its says ""O you who believe! If a sinner comes to you with any news, investigate, lest you harm some people out of ignorance, and you become regretful for what you have done."" Surah al-Hujurat
The media is a double-edged sword. We have to ask and research before launching any reactions. The media directs others to false stories.

Very powerful story and journey! I hate how our US military just lets these Veterans go without proper mental health help to be sure they are okay to go back into civilian life without debilitating PTSD, trauma is invisible but we know the military is more likely than not to experience it. So we should 100% help support them all the time but especially when leaving active duty!
I truly believe once you see combat in the military it should be mandatory to have some form of counseling afterwards. Maybe 3 months, or more if you want it. You don't even have to call it therapy- call it debriefing. Sitting face to face with another human to help ease the burden of what you experienced could save the life of that soldier and help the family they return to. No stigma if ALL have to go. There is a wonderful doc the military made in 1946 that shows the help soldiers received post WW2. Famed Hollywood director John Huston, a vet himself, made the film for the army. The army saw it as controversial- and blocked its release until the 1980s. The methods of treatment in the film are outdated- but what is never outdated is the compassion and care shown to these once broken men. Your heart will break.

Even better would be not to set people up for trauma in the first place by training them to see other human beings as something other than human in order to make it easier to kill.
Same in the UK. We the working class are nothing but disposable cattle bred for our labour in whatever form, be it military cannon fodder or starvation wage slavery in civilian life.

Come to all religions with questions. I know people of faith who do not subscribe to religions in order to believe in their deity. Perhaps that is in the future for most people but meanwhile, for many, religions provide community that would not be there otherwise, and in this case, that was a good thing, yes? Surely you can agree with that?

While I'm happy Richard found his calling and is living a fulfilling life right now, this story should also help us rethink US militarism and the conversation around the destruction it brought upon, not only Muslims around the world, but also US soldiers who get radicalized by the destruction they witness and dehumanization of others they go to kill.
I was not ready for what was presented here. The sheer magnitude of the impact this story has is nothing short of life changing. There are almost endless "what ifs" that could have wiped out everyone telling this story, but somehow love founds its way into the story and all the wrong doors closed, leaving only the doors open that lead to understanding and compassion. It took a series of miracles to allow this pathway to unfold. This needs to be put into the mainstream so that it can reach all that need to hear it!
Met with love and kindness, he made the right choice, began to heal and was transformed. With countless soldiers set in motion for war, the world needs warriors for peace like Mac literally for survival.
I hope everyone has the chance to watch this.

Such a moving, powerful story of how love and kindness ultimately conquers hate and violence. A proof of the humanity that resides in each and everyone, without exception, as human beings. We are made to love, to be kind, and forgiving.
This should be watched by all. It should also be included in all school curriculum. And especially would be a valuable short film to view for all brave military men and women as they transition into civilian life. So inspiring, and an amazing story of hope for humanity.

This is a story about communication....prior to his visit to the Islamic Center, Mac had simply never communicated with any Muslims. After his visit, the channels of communication were open, and understanding followed. This is why we should never cut off the lines of communication. Once a dialogue is opened, we move forward towards peace. Thanks for this, Malala. Hope this film wins an Oscar.
Thank you for speaking with such clarity and honesty. The journey has been hard but my goodness me, this man has reached levels of I guess what you could call 'enlightenment' that many people never reach. Allowing a closed and broken heart to be healed by open hearted humanity and love was an act of incredible personal bravery. It takes guts to face who you are. Real guts, and as a role model, in that community, and to your daughter: Wow, job done!

Thank you, New Yorker, for this wonderful documentary. As an immigrant Middle Eastern American I have experienced considerable prejudice and news items like this gives me hope and lightens my heart. I wish stories like this were in the news more often.
What a true testimony, that being kind to each human regardless of race, religion, or color, will produce peace all around, contrary to hate and war! Lessons learned: say “peace”, smile, if you don’t know-ask questions yourself, don’t listen to negative hateful people, and… be God conscious. ❤ peace be upon you ❤

I read a part of this story on CNN. I am so grateful to God that Mac did not detonate that bomb in the Mosque. The thought of the harm it would have done almost stops my breathing!! Man this is super emotional. I'm proud to be a Christian, but since I was a teenager when 9/11 happened I had some of the same hatred when I was young. Not happy, but it was the truth and I was so wrong. My prayers for all the people who still have that hatred.

I have lived my life by the motto, "Make friends different than yourself. It makes you a better person" By doing that my life has been enriched in countless ways. It made my parents better people as well just by being exposed to my friends. They are Mccoys who were raised in the mountains of Kentucky. I can walk in their door with anyone no matter race, religion, sexuality, nationality and whatever else you can think of that makes us different, and they will be welcomed. I truly believe if we would take the time to actually get to know each other we would all be better to each other. ❤
