    As a young kid I never really cared about race and it wasn't until I was older that I noticed that every time I watched a TV show that was an all black cast (sister sister, fresh prince, etc) My mom would ALWAYS say "turn off this garbage" but she would never say that when I watched the Brady Bunch or something. Kinda fucked up how our parents can skew our views when we're just innocent children who don't know better.

    As a child I saw no difference between races, gender, etc. which might have been due to me going to a very diverse preschool (preschool was my first time playing and meeting other children). I played with all the children in the preschool and my first perceptions of race became how I saw these people act. I believe that this is the healthiest way to introduce race to a child because they are learning what people are actually like before they ever hear the stereotypes. I have grown up as someone who to this day won't even think about race unless someone brings it up and as a result has treated everyone the same. While this is not going to work for everyone, it worked when my parents were raising me and it is one of the many reasons I am thankful for my parents.

I think it's fear that separates people, and sometimes it's good to go against our parents because they are from a wierd generation.

We did everything together. I remember one day we told each other that we were sisters and we each ripped out a strand of hair and put it on each others head and claimed to be sisters forever. I don't know if she moved out not but I never saw her after that. Idk the reason cuz I was young. I just wanted to share :D

But the white kids didn't mind playing with mix race kids and me because I'm lightskin and so they thought I was mixed too. The white kids weren't racist but they preferred to stick to there own. No body mentions mexicans or Scottish people or irish people or anyone else who weren't seen as equal. Black and white are only two colors.
      And about that last bit. You seem to be applying that if I was black then I would have to deal with more serious problems. That's rather subjective since everyone has problems not just people with darker skin and they aren't made any less serious the lighter your skin is.

When I was sent to the predominantly white catholic school I was told in the first grade that the white parents preferred that their children not play with me. My dad had read to us every Sunday morning and I loved books. I just sat on the bench and read and thought those silly girls would probably loose at their games if they let me play. it did hurt to be excluded. Totally true, it's so inbred into the environment then they blame black people for being violent and angry, Do you know how it feels when you don't receive love from your own environment For all I know we are all related in one way or another. I have grown up with so many friends from a stretch of the world so watching this made me tear up at how evil some people are to teach their kids something like this. If God keeps me alive I will make sure the world has love and peace. The true enemy is anyone who puts themselves over another person. We are all from the human race and that's what matters. I truly believe the young generation is the only thing that can save any other generation.

    9:02. SO TRUE! As a black parent you do want your children to just be...prepared for race relations so the children realize what’s going on once it finally happens. So true! It’s not to make the children racist but to just make them aware. I’ve seen it in my family.
    P.S. I’m not a parent.

    As an early child educator this makes me very sad and disturbed I had no idea what kids were being told so much past than what we tried to teach in our program. Different color of skin would often come up and talked a lot about it. One way we taught it was focusing on the similarities of our outer appearances and the inside of our bodies. We often would bring a brown and white egg in and ask them what's the difference between the 2 eggs. They would state the obvious one is brown & one is what. Then we would crack the egg and show them what's inside and ask them what's the difference? They would respond there isn't any. Then we would tell them that's how our bodies are we look different from the outside but on the inside we are the same. Then we would ask a question they could reference to most likely their class were of different nationalities & cultures so we would often ask questions along the lines what the world around us of everything was the same. Like there was just one kind of tree or on brown grass or only night and no day and what if there was only one kind of person and we all looked the same and sounded the same would that be any fun? Most agreed that would be dull & boring so we would allow them to point out similarities and differences and encourage them that's what keeps things fun learning more about things we just do not know a lot about and seeing the similarities and differences between humans and other things within our world. It wasn't something we covered once then moved on we would visit it or input new ideas of thinking as the class progressed.
    It's true it often starts in the home and it's sad that kids thought it would upset their parents. The way I look at things I get a part of that, but one day that child will be a part of society & the adult world and as much as they are of the parents' world one day their world will be all theirs and why not teach them cultural diversity and how to accept or the very least co-exsit without making it about color and learning to know a person and decide if they are good by who they are as a person. It's really disturbing we are now in 2020 and we still have this division.

  • @Blahbevava

    I work in a very multicultural school. All the students get along very well together with almost no mention of race what so ever. White kids sit with Black kids and so on and so forth. Then Black History month comes along and it's as if all of sudden the behavior of the students is transformed and everybody starts calling racial fouls and dividing themselves based on race and skin color. It's one thing to teach about different cultures and backgrounds. However I feel that we should simply have AMERICAN HISTORY Month and give all students at the same time an opportunity to express themselves and their culture and share it with other students. By making a distinction and dividing such celebrations based on race and skin color we are in a sense teaching children to make that distinction and division as well. It's time to change that!

      American history month!! Really????? Lmaooooo please tell me what is the history of African Americans in this country!! 400 years of slavery, 12 years of reconstruction! And 100 years of Jim Crow!! Your idea will be teaching whites kids that they are superior!! Black history month is designed to teach black children that they were more than just slaves!! That you can be proud of your skin color and culture regardless of your ancestors standing in life!!!

    • @Blahbevava
      @Blahbevava Před 10 lety +12

      No offense but I sense a lot of presumption and arrogance in your response. Let me try to explain some more. Unlike having a History Month that just celebrates one culture, American history month would teach students that all cultures and backgrounds are important and so were not just singling out one! It would also eliminate the idea of segregating people and their history based on their Skin Color because gee everything I grew up learning from people like Dr. Martin Luther King is that the color of one's skin is not suppose to matter!! So why would anyone choose to define themselves and their history by it? Sorry to say but anyone who define's who they are solely by their skin color is a moron. What does the color of your skin have to do with who you are as a person and what you choose to do with your life to have a positive impact on the world and the other people in your life? We have many different cultures but that has nothing to do with skin color other then by circumstance. Skin color continues to be an issue because so many people keep making it an issue!! "Proud of your skin color" Seriously?? What does the color of your skin have to do with anything other then a chosen means to divide and segregate yourselves from the rest of your fellow man. I know that I don't define myself by my skin color. I mean how stupid and shallow of a person I would be if I did so. I believe in One Race, The Human Race, and in so doing I believe in loving my fellow man no matter what skin color they are, working together and celebrating our history together and therefore teaching kids to do the same! This has NOTHING to do with WHITE Kids or Black kids! It has NOTHING to do with Skin Color and that is the point!! In order to end the ever on-going issues with Racism we need to choose to begin to define ourselves differently then what we did in the past! The very language that we are using to define ourselves like "race" and "skin color" creates rifts, division and segregation. Everything that people like Dr. Martin Luther King stood against as he dreamed of a day that we could all sit down at the same table together in brotherhood. Do I have to quote him? I guess I do! "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." SO WHY Do so many people today choose to continue to define themselves by skin color and not by who they are and the content of their character! Further this has NOTHING to do with teaching white kids that they are superior. Because it is Not solely about White kids. It's about EVERYBODY! I would argue that Black History month often times teaches black kids that they are superior and to hate whites for what SOME white people did to them in the past. I assure you that there is by far more to the history and culture of the European ancestry that has nothing to do with hate, murder, and oppression of other people's. Hundreds of thousands of whites and blacks fought America's bloodiest war to help put an end to slavery! There are positive and negative aspects to every culture. We are all guilty of sinful things and in need of God's forgiveness. The point of American History month is to focus on the positive things and let go of the hate of the past. To share with each other our many different cultures to come to a better understanding of love, unity, and respect of one another. That is why it is so important to bring everyone together in celebration and not make a single distinction for one particular culture over another.

    • @Blahbevava
      @Blahbevava Před 10 lety +3

      Regardless of what anyone thinks I'm planning to start an American History month. Unlike other history months this month will include celebrations for EVERYONE! Other people can choose to continue to have their own months if they wish but I myself choose to do something that brings people together and not divides and segregates them apart based on ridiculous things like skin color. Something that focuses on building the future together and not living in the past.

    This was 2012 and yet now we're in the later part of 2020 and things are still the same, if not worse. I really do find it shocking that parents send this message to their kids. I am white and have two kids aged 5 and 3, one is at nursery and one is in school and I cannot imagine telling my kids that they cannot play with other kids because they are a different skin colour! To me, that's like telling someone you don't like them because they have a different eye colour or different colour hair. My 3 year old is a little young to grasp the concept but I have talked to my 5 year old about how her school friends, several of who are either Asian/Indian or black/mixed race and I have asked her if she's sees how they are different. She fully understands that she has "pinky white skin" (her words) and some of her friends have the same as her and some have "brown and black skin" but as she says, "they have beautiful skin and I love all my friends". That is how we are raising our kids...to see the (obvious) differences, but also to know that it doesn't define someone and we can all get along, whether white, brown, black or any other shade. It is something that makes the world interesting and exciting and that it would be boring if we were all the same. Just like there are different hair colours and eye colours, there are different skin colours. I have also told her that if she ever hears or sees someone bullying one of her friends because they are a different skin colour to her, the right thing to do is step up and say that it doesn't matter and being mean about someone's skin colour is bad and if that means telling a teacher, that's what she should do. If I found out that either of them had been mean to someone about their skin colour, I would verbally whoop their asses because I will not tolerate racism from my kids. Education begins at home and it is the parents' job first and foremost to raise their kids to respect everyone, regardless of how much or how little melanin they have in their body...because that's what it boils down to.

    it''s funny to me, how afraid adults are to talk about skin color with kids. We will do almost anything to avoid saying "black" or "white" or any other race. Today i was reading a book with a 2 year old toddler in my class. The book was about bath time and it showed how the different babies would play with toys and play with the soap and the water. One of the babies in the book has dark skin. imediately the child i was reading to pointed out that the black baby had the skin color of a black child in the classroom. All I said was, "yes, that's right, that baby has the same skin color as ________" isn't she a cute baby? i turned the page and there was a white baby. I said "Aww, look, that baby looks like you." It was very simple but, if i were to ignore the child pointing out the different colors, what would that help? Why not point out that all the babies in the book are cute?

    I just remembered what my comment to this was 9 years ago. My initial reaction was to hate the white kids. Today, I have a different view. I strongly dislike their parents and whoever has led them on the wrong path! I cannot hate these kids though. Sadly they are misguided! I feel bad for them. I can only hope that since this video they have learned to open themselves to a better way of life, but I know that is a pipe dream. Maybe one day we can not be judged by skin color. I won't see it in my lifetime but I hope my grandchildren or great grandchildren can live in a better world.

    It is quite natural to gravitate towards people who look like you, people often even marry a partner who has similar looks and proportions as well as race. But parents should not be encouraging differences, it is confusing to kids.

    My parents NEVER instilled racist attitudes in me and I was "anti-racist" for most of my life. But now, I truly believe that blacks and whites are significantly different, not just in skin color but also in intelligence and temperament. I don't hate blacks (at all) and I believe that blacks and whites can be friends, but I no longer believe in total integration at any cost. Does this make me a "racist"? No, I don't think so. I think racial consciousness and tribal identity is completely natural, normal and healthy.

      ***** "The fake innocent posture you're trying to pull"
      I'm not trying to "pull" anything and my position is neither fake nor innocent. It's grounded in realism and honest observation over many years. Blacks and whites are DIFFERENT. They differ in brain sizes, IQ levels, testosterone levels, penis size, skull shape, mating patterns, crime patterns and other significant social behaviors. If your interested (and I doubt you will be) here's some source material:
      www.harbornet.com/folks/theedrich/JP_Rushton/Race.htm
      These racial differences have real world consequences. For example, I do not believe that whites (or Asians) will ever play basketball quite as good as blacks. Conversely, I do not believe that sub-saharan Africans (on their own, with no help from others) would be able to put a man on the moon, build a space shuttle or create the Haldon Collider. If YOU actually believe they can do those things, you're either lying to be politically correct or you have very poor observational skills.
      These are honest beliefs and I am entitled to them. If you honestly think I should "die" for simply being honest about my observations, then you are an ignorant person who reacts with violence when he's unable to counteract with facts, science and reasoned opinion.

    Im such a empathetic person... I seriously rewinded back as far as i could remember. :/ Funny i got here. I really thought about this earlier. Wondering how & when i started to become aware of racial tension. I do remember exactly when i first learned that my parents acted a certain way when i tried to invite a black friend over. She just lived in my neighborhood, & as a kid... i just thought i could still play w/her. Well, when i went over to her house to try & talk to her, her family gave me hell. Adults just going off on me. I knew it wasnt my fault, but it was my familys actions. So, i thought i deserved it & i just stood there & took it. Before that, before it being called out, i do remember playing some kind of black girls playing some kind of patty cake thing. Idk what you call it. Just singing w/ hands. I had never heard what those certain songs before. Or they knew extended versions. It had to have been towards the end of the yr bc i never spoke them before. I do think i went over there bc they were different too... That was definately a white majority school. We had horrible white sitters. So they sent us to the inner city school after that. By fourth grade, we moved to the suburbs. More white ppl. I had one white friend, one black friend. The chinese girl moved before the yr finished. I hadnt seen so many spanish speaking folks till my 20s. & That was only bc i moved to the south. I think i knew an entire 4 my entire school yrs.
