- Joey Batey, the actor who plays the young musician Mark Smeaton in Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, is learning to play the lute. He let us film one of his lessons with RSC musician and company band member Nick Lee.

He's part of a band called The Amazing Devil so yeah, he actually is a bard lol the band is AMAZING (no pun intended)!
I'm kind of a bard at a Renaissance festival I work at (I say kind of because I'm not getting payed playing and most people try throwing me out of places) and I'm attempting to weasel my way into the bards guild we have, and yes lmao, pretty much all of us are exactly like this and it's incredible

I play the violin so I always look at performances of actors playing an instrument to see where they failed. Watching the TV show I was surprised how well they edited it. Now I know why it looks so good in the show. The actor's actually playing it. Holy feck I love him for that.
RIGHT? I was so astounded!!! I only play piano, which is a LOT easier to fake (or to even to just learn a piece or two on), but even just from observation within the musical world, it's so painfully obtrusive when people are miming. You get to the point where you just appreciate that they've put some vague effort into the miming. Then THIS dude comes along and is *actually playing* a freaking *lute*?????

Dear God, he played lute earlier. He truly IS Jaskier.
It's really strange that Netflix decided to find an actor who actually can play the instrument, how many shows did they make with actors just imitating playing an instrument. But I'm really glad they did, because I can't imagine anyone other than Joey playing Jaskier, the acting and the singing and hand gestures are amazing 😗👌 !
They didnt go out their way he showed uo to the interview with a lute and played for them they just decided he was best for the role based on all factors after the fact

I heard his agent said something along the lines of ‘you can play the lute right?’ Which would be a big indicator to bring it
I like to imagine when the casting directors for The Witcher saw his audition (with live lute playing), they said "Holy s**t, RSC/West End/Broadway stage credits AND can play the lute? This guy is perfect for the role!"

Oh wait I thought this is about Joey learning to play lute for The Witcher. And then I looked at the date and it’s actually 6 years old! It makes it 100000x cooler knowing Joey actually knew how to play lute even before he auditioned for Jaskier role.

Sometimes I just look at some people and get the feeling universe put extra care of them. Joey is one of these very few, like, you know, he's gonna do things, go places, and everything's gonna work for him somehow. all those strings so close together! - very different from a guitar. Mr Batey is perfect for any Shakespearean production. A classically trained actor, very impressive.
