Hi Thomas, this is a great video, and i want to ask more about the Template Button > How to create a template button which can add a new data in the database quickly in other page?

Hi Thomas, great video, I only have one question: at the 11:30 mark you added a template button that creates a link to the master database and another one to make a copy of the database, but you followed the same steps to make both of them with the difference that with the former you used slash link to page, and the later you used a braket, but the instruction seems the same, am I missing something or it's something that notion does when you make to template buttons to the same link? I have the same problem with this section and figure out that we can use Notion's new feature ""synced block" to fix it. Turn the original page into a synced block and copy it to the template button window.
This seems to be a troubling case for a number of people. I have also tried these two different buttons and I have no problem using brackets to insert a link, however, that button (the one with the brackets used) opens the template and not an empty new version. I am trying to have a button, which opens a template with a new (empty ) record and not the template itself. I find Notion a bit cumbersome when I have to say in the table view new and choose a template instead of having a button which opens a new template with a ne, empty record. I was hoping that the second option (the one with the brackets ;) ) can do that.
How do you duplicate a page that has already been created a with content in it, and turn it it into a new blank template ? Also , how do you save that blank template that can be used in different pages?
Is it possible to turn a page with several difference blocks (toggle lists, to do, pieces of text, various inline database types) that's never been used as a template, into a template? Simply trying to copy and paste the blocks into the 'new template' page does nothing?
Copying and pasting should work, but a better way that will preserve the layout is this: 1. Make a blank template page with a unique name. 2. Select the page containing all your blocks, choose Move To and search for your template page or paste its URL into the box 3. Head to your template page, right click the page within it (the page you moved) and Turn Into an h1. Feel free to delete the resulting H1, which is the page title. All blocks will now be in your new template page.

Hi Thomas, thanks for all your content. I created a template for my team however, what I noticed is that when I write in one of the databases from the template that I duplicated for myself, it shows up in the public template database which I thought wouldn't happen since it was duplicated. How do I fix this? Can't seem to find the answer directly. Thanks in advance!
this is a great app ... however how do i reuse a template i duplicated from someone else. i try to reuse them on a few of my pages however when i edit the contents the changes reflect everywhere not sure why that it ... very frustrating
Well, you lost me right at the start Thomas. The name "Template Basics" seems to me to be a magical text string, beneath which everything written becomes a template. Is that correct?
Thank you so much for your templates and everything. I have notion since yesterday and before your videos i was just lost... I would really like a template or tutorial for budgeting bc the one from notion is really too basic for me.
do you have a notion 101 tutorial? or does anybody know a good series of videos to teach the basics of notion? Ive never used it and would love to get the grips on the essentials first
For creating a dynamic checklist every time, would you rather use a sync block that link to a master? Your thoughts? With sync block asking your team to unsync and then makes changes can be inconsistent.
Is It Possible to make a database itself, a template? For example, I want to use similar databases for different kinds of projects but don't want to build the database from scratch again.
This got way to complex for me very quickly... I feel like I need to first get to grips with databases in Notion. Could not follow along as I did with previous vids. 😓
Thanks for the amazing video! With regards to what you did with the Master Filming checklist, where you created a "link to page" inside of a template button inside of the template, I know you can do something similar with Synced blocks. When would you use one rather than the other?
Awesome video! It looks like you have tasks that are set to reoccur, with a visual status if it is completed which resets with the new occurrence. That's some next levelskills! Please make a tutorial on that. I also see the note for creating a new team member, saying to change the filter for the assignee on Buckaroo's task table. Can new team members alter that and see everything in these team databases, or can you set permissions so that not only pages, but certain content in a database is not accessible by certain members? What's a good copy manager?
Grading & camera question. The warm grading of the main camera (your Canon as usual? I know it doesn't really matter...) is wonderful but I just looooved the cooler look of the PiP camera during the presentation that goes full screen at the end (16:40) 'cause that's what I'm trying to achieve with my setup :-) I took the screenshot for the reference. Great video btw, it's now resting in my "Knowledge Hub" under the tag "Learning Notion", thanks so much!
Hi Thomas, the trick you used at 11:24 to create a copy of a wiki page no longer seems to work. It now always creates a linked page instead of a copy. It was working fine up until recently, looks like Notion updated how page links work. What is your current workaround for this? I am also in touch with Notion support at the moment for a solution, no progress so far.
Crap, you're right. This is another thing that has been broken with this week's updates to page links, in addition to the sidebar functionality. The current workaround to this would be to put the checklist in a Synced Block, and then un-sync it on each new project so you can edit it without changing the master checklist. I've asked Notion to fix this: twitter.com/TomFrankly/status/1403161469101948936
@@ThomasFrankExplains Thanks for the reply. I have also been in touch with their support team and my request has been forwarded to the engineering team. They said they are looking into it and will keep me updated. I will try out the sync block method you mentioned, even though I am not 100% sure I understood how to do it.
@@ThomasFrankExplains Did you notice that strangely legacy templates (created before the updates) that contain a \link to page will still generate a duplicate of the page, as expected? I'm not even sure how thats possible, but somehow there must be something different about those that cause them to still work, versus if you create a new/identical template now it always creates a link. No idea why legacy templates would work but new ones wouldnt, since it seems to be the exact same thing under the hood....but I think that is a big hint as to what caused it to break....maybe pass that along in your tweet?
@@ThomasFrankExplains btw, another workaround is just let it create the page link when you click the template button, but then immediately go to the hamburger menu on the right side of the generated page link and duplicate it. When you duplicate it like that, it doesn't create another page link, it creates a brand new page. So then just delete the page link, and you're back to where we were before.
When you demonstrate the task manager and forget things, I recalled you were using Things 3. Have you migrated completely to Notion or you still use it for managing your tasks?
@@justtere i never had use for the same template to be used across multiple pages, but i just tried it now. you can duplicate a template button you have in a page and move it to another page with no issues. or if you want your template button to remain in one place, then place all your blocks under a page (within the template button) and then everytime you need to use it, generate your template there and then drag it to your relevant page
This is very helpful!! As I'm combining two databases while building a meal planning tool, I combined my recipes database with another database that had a data, day, week properties, and while that worked, I cannot figure out how to copy a recipe from one row to another. Each Recipe is a page created via database template. and while I can copy an entire row and that will copy the recipe field/cell successfully (that will properly open up that page), I cannot copy the individual cell, the recipe itself. Any ideas? I looked everywhere with no luck.
I love your Videos Thomas ! Could you maybe also show on this channel how you film Videos this good? But more in depth ? like showing you settings etc. that would be so interesting !!
Love the tutorials and templates. What is the best method to assign tasks to team members? Then I can see tasks by team member, track individually, by project, etc.
For some reason if I title my database template that title then populates in every new instance of that template. How do I get the name of the database entry to be untitled but name the template?
HI! I've been watching some of your videos in search of an answer but unfortunately didn't find one yet. We're using the Projects & Task template from Notion and created a template within the project database with product owner information to fill out. This template also contains a board view of the linked tasks for this project. Now, when we create a new project, the tasks are linked to the new project, but also to the template. Unlinking them from the template, well, unlinks them making the template useless in that regard. Is there a way to create a new project from a template with linked tasks to only that new project and keeping the template untouched?
Is there a possibility to put multiple template buttons at the top of the page and then insert the content on click below the last button of the button group?
I've often wondered why on Earth that Notion doesn't just let us "Save as Template"? Why do I have to recreate what I've already created just to create a bloody template page?
hi when update the template database the pages depend this template not updating after update the template can I do atumaticlay update page depend for this template
Great content. Just wonder how you would use templates when let's say you wanna change a task so it looks DONE. I need to do some changes in my DB like changing the Kanban Status, unchecking a checkbox and checking another checkbox. I fail to uncheck checkboxes and change the kanban status
Great content. Just wonder how you can create a "project task list" link which should contain let's say 4 different task which I have created in a db with templates. So automate the manual way ... go to the DB and click NEW with Template 1, than template 2 after this template 3 and finish the workflow with template 4. Get these 4 template creation clicks into a link kind of button to automate the creation of these 4 templates. Hope you understand what I am talking about.
Whenever I make my templates, parts of the completed template are deleted every time I try to integrate it into my workspace. Anything I can do? I'd have several templates for my content calendar, but every template either loads incompletely or as a new page when I already included things before integrating the template!
I have a problem. I use the Projects & Tasks template inside Notion. Now I have created a template inside that, because my projects do always have the same order and tasks. The problem is: when I change the status of a task in one project it automatically changes the same status in all my projects. As if they were connected. How can I get rid of that? It's not really good to create a new database for each individual project, right?
Is there some way of using the row's values in the template? For instance, I have a property in my database, which is a formula, which generates a url, based on a different property's value. I'd like the detail view for every row in my database to embed an , and set the `src` attribute to that row's formula property. I haven't been able to find any examples of doing something like this. Do you know if it's possible? Thanks!
Awsome video! But for some reason the part at 10:30 isn't working for me. It keeps taking me directly to the Master Checklist instead of making a copy.
Notion changed things and this doesn’t work anymore unfortunately. Now you’d want to use Synced Blocks instead - there’s a video on this channel all about them!
Hi All! Thanks @Thomas Frank for this video - super informative and easy enough to follow (even for a new user). I got stuck around the 12 minute mark. When I follow the instructions my "Generate Filming Checklist" links to the page. I cannot get the second (with breadcrumbs) "Link to Filming Checklist" you reference using a double bracket syntax rather than the forward-slash shortcut. Has someone else gotten stuck in the same way? Can anyone advise? Thanks so much everyone! :)

Thank you. This was really helpful. Is there any way to take an existing line (page) in a database and magically make it into a template? I found a workaround for it by making a template of one line in my tracker DB and duplicating it. But it's a tiny bit annoying. I manually have to change the properties like the icon, date etc. Urgh. What a chore. 😄 First world problems .
I just downloaded the Blog Post template from Notion. Is there a way to spawn an instance of that template within the UB - CC Template? I'm working in Areas/Resources, where I have an Area for an educational curriculum that I'm migrating into a Blog. Is it possible to add that Blog template as an option among the Daily Note, Note with Tasks, Recipe Template, Book Notes, etc?
Thanks for the video! Q: when I create/use a template button, for some reason whatever I edit within the copied template updates on the master. How can I avoid that?
Thank you for the great video and the whole course! I have a question for you around templates that I have a feeling you will have a solution for. I want to have a main coaching page, within it a database of clients(with a template of a client page) and within it a database for coaching session (with a template of a coaching session). Now building the systems I want to make sure I start it smart so it will be easy in case I will want to make changes in the future for each. And I was wondering if there is a way I can have the coaching call template in the main page wiki and have a template connected to that page so even after I have many pages for clients I will still be able to make adjustments to the main template without needing to change in each one. I want it to be the template and not just a copy of it in the template. I thought maybe to keep a main database for all sessions with just views depending on client name Or if there’s a way I can make a copy of the main template and have the blocks of the page added to the template page. Let me know if it makes sense and if it’s something you can help with Thanks 🙏🏻
Hey man! Really good videos, straight to the point! I would like to know if you can create template tasks (not to be confused woth recurrin). Let's say u have projects, the projects are making videos. So every time you create a new project video, you will have to script, film and edit it. So can u create a project remplate with those 3 tasks? Or if you do it the tasks will be linked to your template? Thanks man! I'll dig into this, but at least inwsnt to know of it's possible
Great content! I tried to create a template button and did it. But I cannot seem to use it in other pages. Is it only usable in the page you created it in?
Correct; a template button is a block itself, so it only exists on the page where you create it! However, you can put a template button inside a Synced Block, and then paste that Synced Block in other pages.
I have a really strange issue. When I've changed my template, I delete the DB page content but the usual button to click which applies the template no longer shows up. The only way I can resolve it is to create an entirely new page - which means an awful lot of work! Any ideas?
I’ve seen this sometimes - usually I just need to delete one leftover blank space in the content area, so give that a try. If that doesn’t work, try duplicating the page instead of creating a brand new one - that can work too.
@@ThomasFrankExplains the content area is totally blank. I’ve also tried duplicating, but it makes no difference. I have a bug report in with Notion but so far they haven’t been able to fix it I’m afraid.
The note taking template doesn’t seem to want to duplicate into my Notion. Tried a couple times. Is it large and take a long time? Thanks. Looks like exactly what I am looking for. Thanks
Great video Thomas. I've been trying to add a link to a template which lives in another page but not sure how to do it. For example in my main dashboard I will have a "Add new meeting" button (?) that will add a new row to my meetings database. So when clicking on the button it will just show the meeting template which I will fill up and the new meeting will be added to meetings database BUT with nothing showing in the main dashboard. Is this possible to do? With the 'template button' I end up with a view of the meetings database which I don't want. Thanks in advance !
Unfortunately no - there's no way to create a "remote" template button that will add a row to a database. You'll need to actually add the row to the database itself, though you can use a Linked Database to show that database in different areas!
Great video. Some of my work require project-based lists - separate from a larger DB. Let’s say there are three pages: Project A, Project B, and Project C. They are all the same type of project. When creating these in-page databases, is it possible to have an automatic naming system in the template? Example: List - Project A, List - Project B, List - Project C. “List - “ would be defined from the template. The ending title would come from the title of the current page.
Is this still working, I'm trying to follow the steps to generate a copy into the template but it's always changing the root page, Wondering if something change in 2022
Thank you for your tutorials! I am wondering if I can make an entire Project into a template? I am using your Ultimate Tasks template with several Projects that I set up to be used as templates, but just duplicating them doesn't work because they are linked (the original and the copy) / related to each other - if I edit one, the other changes too. Any advice on how to make the projects I have already set up into templates, or do I need to start from scratch (re-do them, making templates for each database)? Any help would be appreciated!
Not exactly - but there's a workaround. Projects contain a linked database for the master task database, filtered by relation to the individual Project. When you create a new project from the template, you're creating a new page - but that new page can't cause new rows to be created in the master task database. So if you have tasks inside the template, those tasks wont' be duplicated when you create an instance of that template - instead, the existing tasks will just be related to the new project AND the template itself. They'll have two relations. The workaround: You can create a bullet list of "tasks" inside the template. After creating your new instance from the template, you can drag those bullet items into your tasks view. They'll then gain the proper relation. It's an extra step, but it is a way to at least have a pre-made list of tasks ready and waiting inside the template. Hope that helps!
@@ThomasFrankExplains Ah. You are a Notion Ninja! Thank you for the quick response! That work-around did the trick, but the sub-tasks stayed as bullets, and I couldn't see the template link for "task with sub-tasks" anymore. Is there a way to access that once you've added content to the page? I am able to repeat the process of dragging bulleted tasks into the sub-task table as long as I create the instance of the sub-tasks table FIRST. This means dragging main bullets individually (rather than a large selected group) first, then creating an instance of the sub-task table for those main bullets with secondary bullets, then dragging secondary bullets (they have to be same level bullets, so no using sub-bullets - use a heading or some other indicator like single and double line breaks) into their parent task, then dragging the bullets from the parent task page to the sub-task table. I hope that makes sense? I am a beginner Notion use so my terminology may be a little off. Anyway, unless you have another Ninja tip for me, it's what is working for me right now. It's not super quick, but WAY better than recreating each task and sub-task item again for each new project!

Thanks in advance!
this is a great app ... however how do i reuse a template i duplicated from someone else. i try to reuse them on a few of my pages however when i edit the contents
the changes reflect everywhere not sure why that it ... very frustrating
Yes. Just make a template button within the table
Is there a tutorial for the Team workspaces? I really want to create this for my team. I have a collective space but I think they would enjoy it.
Cutting all the content to get back the option to apply a template...thank you, Thomas!
Thanks for the detailed video ;-)
I would be very interested in the way you organize your "Content Page"
This got way to complex for me very quickly... I feel like I need to first get to grips with databases in Notion. Could not follow along as I did with previous vids. 😓
This is so helpful.
It has changed the way I use Notion.
Can you make a template for University Students? For classes, events, exams, lecture notes etc.? Maybe some space repetition and active recall?
Tooooo many amazing information in one Video is usual, mind blowing
thanks a lot! Thomas
In table view, can I add 2 separate date properties and have the same title/name appear in BOTH dates when in calendar view? Help 😢
Maybe I missed it. Does the template work universally throughout notion or only in that page and subpages?
Learned a lot here. Thanks man.
Excellent video. I didn't know about the question mark trick.
This was exactly what I was hoping to learn! Great tips, and I appreciate all the llama content also hahaha I subscribed!
@thomasfrankexplains Will you do a video about new "button" function in Notion? It's a bit different now)
iam still waiting for the LAMA training video
When you demonstrate the task manager and forget things, I recalled you were using Things 3. Have you migrated completely to Notion or you still use it for managing your tasks?
I've migrated completely, though I do still throw grocery items in iOS Reminders. (I was on Todoist, not Things)
After creating the Template and adding it to another page, HOW Do you get it to launch or open on a new page.
is there a way I can add a template to a different page? I have a checklist for each essay I write and I would like to have it available as a template
I wish someone would answer this.
Any ideas? I looked everywhere with no luck.
why wont my template show up with the header that i wrote on the template? It pops up with all the content I put in there but no title at all.
I love your Videos Thomas ! Could you maybe also show on this channel how you film Videos this good? But more in depth ? like showing you settings etc. that would be so interesting !!
Love the tutorials and templates. What is the best method to assign tasks to team members? Then I can see tasks by team member, track individually, by project, etc.
good tutorial! would enjoy it more with just notion (no faces)
Very good and interesting video. Thank you Thomas
Is there a possibility to put multiple template buttons at the top of the page and then insert the content on click below the last button of the button group?
I've often wondered why on Earth that Notion doesn't just let us "Save as Template"? Why do I have to recreate what I've already created just to create a bloody template page?
hi
when update the template database the pages depend this template not updating after update the template
can I do atumaticlay update page depend for this template
Another prestige knowledge sharing from Frank. Terima kasih banyak-banyak.
Super useful thanks Thomas!
I'd have several templates for my content calendar, but every template either loads incompletely or as a new page when I already included things before integrating the template!
is there a way to see who has duplicated a notion that I have made public ? Like their name or email?
I have a problem. I use the Projects & Tasks template inside Notion.
Now I have created a template inside that, because my projects do always have the same order and tasks.
The problem is: when I change the status of a task in one project it automatically changes the same status in all my projects. As if they were connected. How can I get rid of that?
It's not really good to create a new database for each individual project, right?
@11:30 both methods only produce a link to the desired page, no new instances or copies of the page's contents
Yep, the introduction of Synced Blocks unfortunately broke this trick
Is there some way of using the row's values in the template? For instance, I have a property in my database, which is a formula, which generates a url, based on a different property's value. I'd like the detail view for every row in my database to embed an , and set the `src` attribute to that row's formula property. I haven't been able to find any examples of doing something like this. Do you know if it's possible? Thanks!
What do you guys think is it worth to switch from clickup to notion
Hey ShanaLee! Unfortunately this trick doesn't work anymore - please see the pinned comment! czcams.com/video/GOy6uVrSjuA/video.html&lc=UgyVD6_V0pXVZ9fbG2N4AaABAg
I am trying to make a database button on my main page
So glad I subscribed to this channel
I have a link but don’t find templates
Great tips! Thank you!
I thought maybe to keep a main database for all sessions with just views depending on client name
Or if there’s a way I can make a copy of the main template and have the blocks of the page added to the template page.
Let me know if it makes sense and if it’s something you can help with
Thanks 🙏🏻
It is just me that doesn’t see “template button” when I type the forward slash? HELP
so am i
Is it easy to create custom macro/calorie tracker in notion?
Hey Thomas, where are you - missing your Notion videos, are u still busy moving? Do you have plans to create more Notion content?
Great content! I tried to create a template button and did it. But I cannot seem to use it in other pages. Is it only usable in the page you created it in?
Correct; a template button is a block itself, so it only exists on the page where you create it! However, you can put a template button inside a Synced Block, and then paste that Synced Block in other pages.
Can't find a template button, only a button. It seems to work different now?
Yep, it's now called Buttons and is more capable than before: czcams.com/video/XX-SHfDagPM/video.html
Fantastic ! Thanks !!
The note taking template doesn’t seem to want to duplicate into my Notion. Tried a couple times. Is it large and take a long time? Thanks. Looks like exactly what I am looking for. Thanks
Can you try it again today? I wonder if you were trying when they were having that DNS issue over the weekend.
Fran how do you make templates with columns? (like your habit tracker template)
Here's an tutorial on how to do that! thomasjfrank.com/notion-nested-columns/
Is this channel just notion related or maybe any other productivity apps such as habitca? Oh man I will love to see those video about habitca 😂
This video is outdated. There is no Template option now. This is not a tutorial. This is a lecture.
The part about database templates is still valid, but template blocks have been replaced by Button blocks: czcams.com/video/XX-SHfDagPM/video.html
You'll need to actually add the row to the database itself, though you can use a Linked Database to show that database in different areas!
thanks a lot
Great video. Some of my work require project-based lists - separate from a larger DB.
Let’s say there are three pages: Project A, Project B, and Project C. They are all the same type of project.
When creating these in-page databases, is it possible to have an automatic naming system in the template?
Example: List - Project A, List - Project B, List - Project C.
“List - “ would be defined from the template. The ending title would come from the title of the current page.
Is this still working, I'm trying to follow the steps to generate a copy into the template but it's always changing the root page, Wondering if something change in 2022
Correct - this changed back in 2021. See the pinned comment for more details!
It's not super quick, but WAY better than recreating each task and sub-task item again for each new project!
it's a good video helpful but i want to create template with rlation rollup when i create new example project master page in down i want create Board for Task rlation with this project i just created
how i can do that
when create new page for new project the template create olso Task inside the page like Board for Task
i hope my idea is cleare
i hope see you answer
thanks alote for this video
see you soon
Its a great day when you have a notion question and this channel shows up!
Freaking out about having the same idea for chrome extensions, although now I'd like to battle
Its wierd, i tried using the method of generating a new template as followed but folowing both instructions led me to link it to the same page. I dont know if anyone else is facing the same issue.
Yep, the introduction of Synced Blocks a few months ago unfortunately broke this trick. More info in the pinned comment!
