For me, in addition to Legend (with live actors in fantasy), I'd add Ladyhawke, The Boy Who Could Fly, Mirror Mask, Willow, the Golden Compass, the Labyrinth, the Hobbit, the original Willy Wonka movie WITH the singing, the 1975 British Alice in Wonderland (ONLY certain parts, NOT the singing), Riddick, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and maybe a few others.

Transforming Tim Curry into Darkness was undoubtedly one of the greatest accomplishments in SFX history.
I still can’t believe to this day that it was Tim Curry under that disguise. I mean, he was 8ft 1", the tallest monster ever played by a physical actor!!!

One of the most beautiful stories I've ever seen!
some 20 years later I bought it on DVD and still come back to it from time to time.
People complain nowadays about "poor" effects of "old" films but they don't understand that it's not effects that make a great film, it's a story and the way that story is told (shown).
I miss those days when you could watch something that would bewitched you and let your imagination to do the rest.

I loved this moving so much growing up in the 80's. I wore out 2 VHS tapes, I was so glad when they released the DVD with the original soundtrack and the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. Don't get me wrong the OST is good, Jerry Goldsmith did a fine job, but I grew up with the Tangerine Dream version here in t he USA. The movie feels completely different with OST, like something was missing.
This is my favorite movie of all time, my favorite Tim Curry movie, and Tom Cruise movie as well. I still don't understand why Tom Cruise is embarrassed about this movie. It was a reverse of the typical Disney Princess movie. It gave boys who loved fantasy films a chance to dream about finding their princess and becoming her prince. I'm not ashamed to admit that, that aspect is one of the things I loved the most about this film as a boy. It also made you feel like magic was just a touch real for a little bit.
Ridley Scott is a friggin legend for pulling this movie off on the budget he had as well.

For the longest time I had actually believed that Tim Curry's character was a real life creature! lol I mean thats how superb the make up was done in this film. I first watched this in 1989 when I was 4 years of age and as a solid chunky 4 year old sitting there watching this is when I completely convinced myself that Tim Curry's character was a real life creature, despite the fact that my family was telling me he was just an actor with a lot of makeup. I was thinking they just dont know the truth. But yeah I was pretty entranced, mesmerized, transfixed by this film with the shiny treasure and other glistening scenes the scary monsters, the young boy and gorgeous girl, the cool armor and sword and the idea a young boy could overcome and prevail against pure evil darkness was all extremely appealing to me. It inspired me to want to be a hero and with my gear and sword I could slay any foul creature from the deep murky abyss. You know I have toy mention it didnt help aid my past inexperienced adolescent suspicions when I saw 6:54 I was thinking How could he rise so seamlessly in those stilts. Maybe it was s real creature and they just chose an actor that most resembles its face ! LOL.........jk but still so seamlessly did he rise......???

David Bennent would have had a German accent if they wouldn't have dubbed him. That ruined it for me. It's just not the same voice as in "The Tin Drum"

      @@felixhorn2559
Technically Bennent would have an Austrian accent in his original voice recording. The studio didn’t like his real voice because they said he sounded like a Nazi. Ridley Scott tried to bring Bennent’s original voice track for the Director’s Cut but couldn’t find that audio recording.

Phenomenal commentary - thanks so much for posting this!
Really highlights some key aspects: the "architecture" (i.e., art + engineering) of the Darkness costume and physical demands on / from Curry.
Even before this moment, when Mr Scott was discussing aspects earlier, and I was thinking about the movie, Rocky Horror Picture Show as the kind of portfolio item you'd be looking for ... was right up there in my mind. But, then, the prompting provided to more specifically consider the challenges - really brings home how incredibly well this all came together and how brilliant the set up and people involved were / are.

  • @DarkRider69
    @DarkRider69 Před 7 lety +6

Rob Bottin is a freaking genius. 30+ years on, Darkness remains the best single-character makeup in film history, IMO. Just brilliant. And, as Ridley mentioned, well-engineered, to boot. It's one thing to turn a man into a 13-foot-tall demon. Quite another to make it possible for him to do that full-tilt run he does in it.

I heard a quote once when I was a child that has stayed with me: “Sometimes even the devil deserves a LITTLE pity.” That certainly holds true in “Legend” if you stop and think about it. The devil in this particular case is a victim of Fate. He was BORN like this, he wasn’t made like this! He didn’t choose to look like that; who willingly chooses to be ugly? What’s more, he said himself, “Sunlight is my destruction!” So, for him, evil isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity. In a way, he’s just like all the other unfortunate people suffering from xendoderma pigmentosum, one of the original sources for the vampire curse--a potentially FATAL condition triggered by exposure to sunlight. Imagine seeing so much beauty linked to a spring/summer/fall/winter day, but never getting to share in it, because if you do, it’ll most likely be your last day alive. Wouldn’t that make you sad and mad? Also, when Darkness goes and allows himself to fall in love--possibly for the very first time ever in his life--what happens? The woman he loves fears and loathes him! What’s more, she uses his feelings for her to get close enough to the unicorn to free it, thereby all but guaranteeing Darkness’ death! First heartbreaks are the worst, especially for those who’ve never gotten to know the sweetness of love before! Anyway, I’ve said my peace, and will welcome any feedback for it. It can be an official debate thing.
