Yes! 🙌 Thanks Walter, for featuring the Maids again! I love watching you take the same ride I did.
This is the song that pushed me over the edge. As a musician, hearing them express so much emotion and power instrumentally completely changed the way I felt about them. Over time, I discovered that every Band Maid song is an instrumental, just sometimes including vocals.
MISA is cool as it gets. The pick tucking technique has been used by guitarists forever; but it’s the first time I’ve seen a bassist use it to facilitate slapping. I’ve also seen her do it up close. It’s a large triangular pick she tucks with her index finger. The coolest thing is, her index finger placement doesn’t seem to move from where it touches the pick, whether she’s using it or not. She uses her thumb to pull it back out. That’s another reason how she can switch back and forth so fast.
Every time I hear “From Now On,” I can imagine a symphony conductor, arms and baton waving with the movements, directing this masterpiece.
Your first seven Maid songs are almost exactly the same few songs I saw before I got serious and fell deep into that pigeon hole. I’m trying to think of where I went after “From Now On?” If I’m not mistaken, they hit me with the curveball “Daydreaming.” Maybe it’s time for you to hear some of their versatility!? Especially as contrast to this metal instrumental. It will highlight precisely why no band is a match for Band Maid.

Many of us recently saw Band-Maid play “From Now On” live. OMNG! Kanami riffed her ass off. And the DB’s matched the BPM’s! 😱So FROM NOW ON, Band-Maid will grow in popularity even faster as their 2023 BAND-MAID 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR continues in the US (and Mexico!):
    DATE CITY VENUE
Aug 3 Chicago Lollapalooza After Show @ Park West
    Aug 4 Chicago, IL Lollapalooza
Aug 6 Minneapolis, MN Varsity Theater
    Aug 8 Denver, CO Summit
Aug 9 Salt Lake City, UT THE Depot
Aug 11 Portland, OR Crystal Ballroom

Aug 14 Sacramento, CA Ace of Spades
Aug 15 Anaheim, CA House of Blues Anaheim

In addition their recent Japan tour just concluded with 17 concerts, AND they’re writing and recording for their new album. Their 10th Anniversary Tour concludes at Japan’s 17,000 seat Yokohama Arena on Nov. 26, 2023!
The Maids are one of the hardest working super groups in the business! Their music, their sound, each of the Maids... and the love that permeates their live events is an experience not to be missed. Hope you can catch them LIVE! Thx, Walt!

This song takes a certain amount of energy to play. Kanami was a bit under the weather on the tour, some say from drinking too much Red Bull, and was unable to play it in Chicago, the last city on that leg of the tour. If you haven't done 'Without Holding Back' you should. My favorite instrumental goes back and forth with that one.

  • @greylocke100
    @greylocke100 Před rokem +10

This is NOT an instrumental. Kanami's guitar is singing the entire song, an even MISA's bass does some of the singing.
And MISA as you mentioned tucks the pick to slap and pop, she also does it for fingerstyle and snap and claw style. ALthough for fingerstyle it looks like she tucks it into her thumb and palm.
And they have played this one live many times during their US Tour last year and this year.
Under the "Releases" tab on their channel they have playlists of almost all of their discography, A lot of their music doesn't have a video but you can still listen/react to it that way. And I think you would like "Freezer", "Why Why Why", "Moratorium", "Hate?", "Balance", "Corallium", "Unfair Game", "Matchless GUM", "Brand New Road" or anything they have actually.
Seriously, check them out. We will come watch your reaction even if there isn't an official MV or LV.

I saw them in Boston last fall and they played this live and it was just as awesome if not better than this studio recording. If you do a search of the Paradise Rock Club and From Now on there is a video from V.Chupin that is awesome with a Kanami focus.

After some decades where most rock bands became so "cool" that they at best would say FU to acknowledge their fans - Band Maid comes along, taking the F and the U before adding the N to give everyone the Band-Maid grin going.
I absolutely love when Kanami displays her roots as a classical pianist in her songwriting. Saying "Shut up - I am speaking now".
As I was trained to play church organ for close to a decade, her musical sensibilities make SOOOOO much sense both harmonically, in the chord progressions and for the vocal/solo instruments (often moving inversely).
Another feather in the hat for Kanami comes here. She has a vision. When Miku agreed to learn the guitar, we can in retrospect see what the vision of Kanami was (and what the insanely hard-working spirit of an 800-year-old pigeon can lead to: Kanami can now apply her proggy sensibilities with force. Band-Maid can not unleash Kanami, MISA and Akane running solos at once - because Miku now is so good that she keeps the chore "stable" in the centre for Saiki to know where she is.
I get that original fans are less excited about this drift towards "prog" - but I find it extremely exciting (I found them while browsing endlessly in the boredom of lockdowns). I can hear how these talented groups of women are evolving:
Akane is the proggy one - playing the composition, more than "keeping the rhythm" - MISA is the jazzy one doing impro, while Kanami is the classically trained musician who knows her hardrocking Prokofiev et al. What maybe surprises me most is how natural Miku is rhythmically. 1) She keeps that rhythm guitar steady while MISA and Akane go into heavy syncopation - to the point that they visit odd metrics, but she is also surprisingly accurate when she is asked to join into syncopation. And then there is Saiki standing front and centre with a band that may go into their current level of madness (like on "Black Hole").
What I am trying to do with this long rant is to underscore that this band is not just great FUN - what they are doing right now is actually intellectually interesting. And that is why I get this grin from them. They sound so damned fresh when I thought every Rock-rope has been beaten 30 years past their sell date (except for the oldies on their next "last tour" playing material they wrote in the 70s and 80s).

We all love Saiki singing but the instrumentals (and songs where Miku takes the lead vocals) are used so she can rest her voice during live shows. Early on Saiki did damage to her vocal chords and needed surgery, since then she takes a break during live sets. Usually, the band does one instrumental and one song that Miku sings. Saiki's voice is now stronger than eve and the fans get to see the band shine.
