    As someone who started drawing first and sculpting only later on, I feel like the two skills complement each other. They are two different ways of "seeing" your art. Drawing teaches you to look through forms to see shapes whereas sculpting teaches you to look around forms to see structure and relationships between forms. Each one is invaluable as a visual artist. My two cents.

      @@kayaeki Well, the best advice I ever had in sculpting is to build your sculpts in phases or passes, just like in drawings. Your first pass should be your large shapes. Use primitives like spheres and cylinders to block out your shapes just like you would use them in construction drawings. After you block out you can move into your secondary detail pass by sculpting in major landmarks of the body and getting your anatomical details down. Then you want to retopologize and use multi resolution to sculpt in high detail and use the topology to build clothing and accessories around the character. Always take your time and only move to the next stage when you can't achieve any more detail at your current resolution. And move the camera all the time. Look at your model from all angles. It can look perfect from one angle and then look awful just as you start to turn it. Good luck!

      Tbh I feel like there are a lot of bases that drawing can teach sculpting and vise versa, idk really know much about how y'all learn sculpting and what not but I really do feel like since drawing and painting covers so much that you can really learn from it like an example (I ain't saying this dude did his 3d sculpting bad or anything I know nothing about sculpting and he may have had a reason to do this and all) his character is cool sure but I do feel like as an artist that he really has left a lot of free spaces and he could have made his design better and more fluid. His shape design could be better and again a lot of free spaces make his character seem kinda lifeless without story. Idk if y'all learn this in sculpting but it's one of the first things you learn when you go into drawing character illustrations so much so that it's almost impossible for me not to like notice it everywhere

    Pro traditional sculptor here.
    For me, on top of the perspective, the difficulties also lie in shadows and lights.
    When you sculpt you only focus on shape and very basic color. (an apple is round and you'll apply a mixture of red, green and ochre for instance)
    But when you draw or paint, suddenly you have to show the round shape. You have to decide what color the red is going to be in the shadow and in the light.
    On the bright side, working in 2D means no armature and you don't have to worry about structural questions. It can be faster for certain things.
    I also see it as a sort of vacation when I switch medium as the skills needed are very different.

      There is so much to say about 3D or CGI in general (main term vfx). For example a 3D Game Artist may not be as good in "graphic fidelity" then a full fledged vfx/special effects artist because what you mentioned is a thing that they go through. The diffrence is like you also said that its diffrent mediums with diffrent skill sets. VFX artists have to learn everything there is, we go through all the fundemantals and even advanced stuff. After a time you sure choose some topics to major your degree in but we do infact learn everything since you do need to understand everything to really be good at what your doing. I always dont understand the people who think Game Artists and VFX are the same. No the VFX guy needs to learn about a lot more then the Game artists.

      I started drawing and painting...been always able to model. But not since the start. Some kids at the beginning draw the wrong way, not understanding space. That's how I began. But later, I learned to see the volumes, the "3D" aspect, without even knowing. And then 3D by software came (yeah, am that old, I remember dreaming that "one day we might have game characters made in 3D...and that I could model 'em..." and how I'd stop myself there.... "NAH. What stupid day-dreaming thought. None of those things will happen" :D ), ended up doing main character models and all sort of props at game companies. When someone drawing starts "thinking 3D" is when his/her drawing skills really increase. In my time, in Fine Art college (ehm, in my country is 100% free), nothing was digital other than graphic design specialty (Some macs. We had no computers in any other specialty). So, sculptors where in the basement classes, hitting the stone or terracota modeling all day long... we painters, doing our thing in the other floors... And... some sculptors told me they went for that specialty as they couldn't paint... but most could draw, just many not in detail...Indeed, they had the 3D thing in drawing specially well trained. No surprise, as 3D was their thing, even while most had never handled a 3D software (or any software), ever. Thing is, a very, very reduced few, could draw as well as they could sculpt. Were very few, and very talented. Today there are few "Leonardos" (Da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, musician, architect, alchemist and more..excelling in every area. The density of that brain, Jesus...), but there are, indeed.
      Now, most colleagues I've worked with, if were 2D-concept-UI pros, rarely would do 3D... and many 3D modelers couldn't draw really well, and most, nothing at all... But late years in _SOME_ game art schools they're being taught drawing skills, so, I dunno how is the new generations in that regard.... (still a long while for me to retire, but not in the games area anymore, so, dunno what's the situation now).

    People don’t realize that even stylized 2D artists know a lot about the human form (if they draw figures that is). You can’t draw a person and it look right without knowing what an actual human would look like in front of you. The way the body twists and moves, the way lighting works, etc. One thing a lot of 2D artists learn when drawing from reality, is learning how to convey “weight” in the form, sculptors don’t need to worry about that, the weight is already there.

    I think the two most important points besides understanding perspective are:
    1.) Sculpting can heavily on a rely on "trial and error technique"
    2.) You can ZOOM IN and manipulate your form with constant precision.
    This is not possible in traditional pen and paper drawing since a) You can only erase drawn lines so often until your drawing turns into a mush and b) Your dexterity and tools make it far more difficult to draw minute details on paper.

For me though, I still need to draw something a lot before I feel I understand it, especially with anatomy.

    I have only done a little bit of sculpting but i find it a lot more intuitive and forgiving. If something is not quite right you can just nudge it, add or subtract some material until it looks like you want it to. For drawing you have to construct most things up-front and mistakes are harder to fix later on. Also, as mentioned, things like perspective, light and shadows are already taken care of with sculptures, which can be challenging in 2D for more complex shapes.

    HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO DRAW LIKE THAT IN ONLY 2 YEARS!!!

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir Před 4 lety +21

      Drawing is really just about two themes: Drawing techniques and Practice (to build muscle memory).
      The techniques is something you study, it can be perspective study, anatomy study, pen/pencil stroke styles, etc.
      The practice is what takes the most effort/time compared to how quickly you improve, and here two years of dedicated practice will make anyone proficient at this level seen in the video. Just remember that doodling here and there is not enough, you need to practice it like you practice sports or anything else.
      In the end, if you study perspective, proportions, and how to create a focus point in your drawings, you can become really proficient in just 2 years. Most people who draw for many years just never get to actually studying the art, and just get good at drawing the same things over and over but will struggle to change their style/perspectives/the subject itself.
      Just look at how many people commonly complain about drawing hands, it's not because their techniques are bad, it's simply because they haven't studied the techniques of hand drawing, and hands being quite complex in terms of shape as well as emotional gestures, really means that you need to study it and not just rely on your pre-existing general drawing skills.

It helps to draw on top of references and to map out the different shapes and proportions so you can actually see what you should be doing. Also, watch how other people draw certain things and look at others' techniques! Also, if you're struggling with poses, find a pose generator website and do gesture drawing(pose drawing in a short amount of time i.e. 30 seconds, 1 minutes, etc)

      I think if you stopped and took another look at art, you might find that it is fun to simply create stuff and share it with others, not see it as a competition. It is true that you yourself decides the pace you want to go and how much you want to practice, but to be able to keep it up for years, you need a deeper motivation as to why you draw/paint/sculpt. You will never win the race anyways, so you might as well just take it chill and do something that is meaningful to you :)

    • @Pegaite
      @Pegaite Před 4 lety

      @That guy You said you stopped doing art and that one wasn't passionate about it if one wasn't studying for x hours a day, so I wanted to leave my opinion about that in my previous comment. But I'm happy to hear that you do still draw. I believe that you can achieve a high level of skill-- everyone can-- if you try your best. If mastery is not your goal or if you're not looking for big improvement, then sure there is no need to aim high.

    • @Pegaite
      @Pegaite Před 4 lety +1

      @That guy I think you are just looking at it the wrong way and your mindset is limiting you. Talent will only take a person to a certain level and they aren't born masters, they simply have it easier to begin the journey, but it will take lots and lots of practice to become good.
      I don't know anything about your situation, but maybe you could find other creative outlets like writing, music, photography or idk, painting with coffee or sculpt with wood. Art is a big area and it might help you to try many different things.

    So that's why sculpting was so easy for me! See, I have a good understanding of anatomy and all that stuff since I've been drawing for 7 years now and seeing how much easier sculpting was for me demotivated me a shit load from drawing, but now I know both skills can be useful in learning each of them. Damn thanks bro

    my art school made life sculpting and zbrush mandatory for animation, game art, and illustration, and it really helped me learn the form of human anatomy. i don't think the jump from 2d to 3d is that huge, but i can imagine the opposite being difficult.

      It's easier than you would expect!
      I'm not great at either skill. I absolutely cannot draw, but I can only do some rudimentary modeling and sculpting. But I took a course in 3D once and it was honestly very easy to pick up the fundamentals despite having no skill for drawing.
      In my opinion, something else about sculpting (especially digital sculpting) is that it's largely about morphing and reducing a shape you already have, where as 2d art relies on you creating that base's shape "from nothing" in a way. Even if you're refining a sketch by going over it, it's still different from the process of sculpting.
