    Judge Dredd's helmet has been depicted in so many different ways that there really is no definitive design. This looks like an early rendition of the suit, so it's probably fine for most people. Soft goods are not as good as they could be, though, and that's a bummer.

    I mean, if they were going for the Stallone version then you'd think he'd be EXACTLY the same size as Rambo, so either way it's a little odd 🤔

    Hiya Toys should use spandex or something similar for the bodysuit, with a fake zipper in the front and Velcro on the back. It’s sad that the beautiful body sculpt is covered by the pleather.

    I collect many lines, including Mezco One:12. There are certainly some misses but there are far more hits. Yes, it impedes articulation, obviously, but they can still do more than a lot of, say, Marvel Legends.
    I was hoping for an all plastic Hiya Dredd as I already have the ThreeA and Mezco versions, and this doesn't seem to do anything better. I did order Death though. He looks great.

    as far as his helm..yeah it looks right. it can be both. if you go back to the old comics its all over the place. and still is depending on the artist. I was happy they were making a 1/12 figure..until i head soft goods...thought it was gonna be like the smaller one....not happy.

    Your intro describes my experience to a tee. I'm a Dredd fan and I'd been very impressed with the sculpt and paint detail Hiya has been squeezing into their 1/18 figures, so I was very excited to hear them moving to a scale I actually like collecting! Finding out they were going the soft goods route immediately killed my excitement. The only thing I'd add is that seeing the actual figure, despite my low expectations, I was shocked at how terrible it looks! The sculpted parts do look great, but the suit that covers 80% of the figure looks absolutely terrible and there's no way I could possibly overlook that. The fact that it functions so poorly on top looking bad just adds insult to injury. I really hope Hiya transition to doing fully sculpted 1/12 figures or at the very least become more judicious about what characters they decide to tackle in this style.

    Thanks for the review. I was on the fence about this figure as I'm a big Judge Dredd fan. Your review made me decide to pass. I already have the Mezco standard release of JD along with his Lawmaster motorcycle. Mez and company did a great job on their version so HiYa’s was going to have to surpass that one to get my coin. Sadly, it does not. I’d really love to see a 1:12 sculpted plastic Judge Dredd line again. I don't think we’ve seen one since the Marvel Toys/ToyBiz Legendary Comic Book Heroes Judge Dredd and Judge Death way back in 2006 or 07.

  • @graefx
    @graefx Před 24 dny

    I still have and love my Mezco Dredd. Wish i had gotten the Lawmaster. Soft goods on 1:12 dont bother me as long as theyre well executed. That ends up being a combination of good tailoring, durable, and consistency so things that are supposed to be the same material dont have to be different like a costume and mask. The Mezco Dredd checked all those boxes. The zipper doesnt bother me but the material and range does. Soft boots Im not crazy about. Otherwise everything looks solid. I'll pick up other figures if the line continues. Need a Judge Death.
    The one thing I'm divided on is the overall styling. Mezco adds a lot of extra texture and detailing that balances out some of macro scale problems of soft good texture. This is really smooth and simple which is more design appropriate but I dont know if it works as a figure.

  • @austinhamilton24
    @austinhamilton24 Před 12 dny

    I personally lean towards aesthetics vs articulation, and apart from capes, soft goods always looks out of scale.
    Hiya seems to follow the trend that Joytoy did when they started making 1/12 figures, giving them softgoods. For Joytoy, it seems like that was the decision so they can hide reused bodies.

    Thank you for your honesty, as always.
    I have the 1/18 Hiya Dredd and I really like it for what it is. This new one is a miss imo; I'm not too bothered by the "clothing" but it's more about the helmet looking wrong and the face lacking some kind of....stubble or gruffness. I'm also a firm believer that an ACTION figure without a complicated design should have more articulation.
    On a somewhat related note, I wonder how's the current market for this line/franchise since the comics aren't easy to get AT ALL unless you live either in the US or the UK and the last time we have some kind of cool media of Dredd was...2012?

    • @steventhomas2856
      @steventhomas2856 Před 4 dny

      Quite a few Commonwealth countries get UK publications, including 2000AD. Certainly Australia and New Zealand - Karl Urban didn't need bringing up to speed, he was familiar with Dredd and had read the comics when he was younger.
      I think some U.S. nationals think that "Not familiar in the U.S." = "Not familiar globally". The Commonwealth's a pretty big part of the world as a whole, and many countries probably have more access to British comics/TV shows than the U.S. does.

    I’m not buying this figure as I’m not that big of a Dredd fan, but you gotta admit, he looks just like the drawings in the comics. He’s not muscular in the comics, just seems like a slim person, so this is pretty accurate. I do agree that cloth sucks because it restricts articulation, and it can risk deteriorating in a very short time. Very much prefer plastic over cloth in this case.

    Material doesn't do the sculpt any favours, and the zipper is out of scale. Mezco can find smaller zippers.

Being brutally honest when Hiya toys announce this 1/12 scale for year I thought it would just be a larger version of their 1/18 scale figure but when I found out that they were going to be using soft goods like every other dread figure out they're made after the early 2000s my heart sank as was a very hard pass for me.

I don't buy action figures, but I considered this one because I am really into Judge Dredd. However, after watching a couple of reviews of this figure, I'm going to pass on this one. I’m all for soft goods as long as it’s not pleather/vinyl. Unless things have changed radically in the last 15 years, pleather/vinyl flakes and becomes gummy over time and sometimes it even stains the figure underneath. God help you if you live in a humid climate.

    Shape of the helmet is fine, length/coverage less so. The clear part of the visor nearly always covers his nose in the comics, and the sides on this figure's helmet look like they barely cover his ears. The "super gun" is actually the modern version he uses in the comics. The slimmer version of the Lawgiver (which IIRC was initially modelled on a Luger, and is the only version the 1:18 figures come with, which p!sses me off mightily) hasn't been used in the comics for almost 30 years).
    EVERY figure of Dredd made in this scale is better than this one, even the ReAction version released in the early 00's. It might have had limited articulation, but what it did have was more useful than on this fig.

      For me the big turn-off with soft goods is the risk of them falling apart over time. Depends on the material obviously (I've seen Mego figures that are almost 50 years old and the soft goods are still holding up) but you've got maybe a decade of enjoying your figure before anything like that pleather material or especially rubber is going to start to fall apart. And soft goods always come at such a premium, I'm not sure I want to spend that kind of money for a figure that I know is going to start to fall to bits on me eventually no matter how carefully I handle it.

On paper, sure, perhaps - but in execution, it is unserviceable and inoperable. (Again, see articulation). And to put it bluntly, it just does not look good. Hopefully, Hiya learns from this unconscious, overestimated oversight and thus, collectors get another, more improved version of their favourite Judge Dredd figure.

    The suit is horrible it looks slapped on, there could be other figures (Dredd) that are better 10:33

    The boots are an absolute joke, and that's saying a lot because this figure has nothing but problems.

    3A did a 1/12 judge dredd with a pleather suit and it's way more tailored and looks close to the comic source. And that figure it a bit on the older side now

    I like soft goods BUT...a huge BUT. I stay away from anything with pleather now. I have had a few mezco figures pleather disintegrate in vanilla poses and have a few more that look like they're wearing down. Pleather shouldn't ever be used unless it's a type (if it exists) that will hold up

    Soft goods was a stupid decision. Cancelled my pre order.
