The F-35 Lightning II is the truly remarkable and far fetching futuristic piece of equipment. With the modern avionics and electronics, stealth capabilities and superb weaponry it pushes the quality bar forward and sets up high standards of the modern airplanes.
Designed to fly in any weather and condition, to vertically take off and land, utilize 360 degrees view and the futuristic helmet mounted display system it should provide NATO and its allies with the state of the art technology capable of protecting it against the potential adversaries.
Would this $400 billion airplane be able to turn the tide and provide security to the NATO countries?

One thing not mentioned is the F-35's performance in Red Flag. They dominated the skies bringing in 15:1 kill ratios and gave other aircraft real time situational awareness across the battlespace that made their jobs easier. Then in 2019 they performed even better, even though they were being hit with constant jamming and GPS disruption, they basically controlled how the battles played out. They were essentially the best quarterback of the skies you could ask for. They could read the plays, tell everyone the plays, and execute their own plays almost unchallenged
Yet people will still keep citing the tests and exercises where the F-22 and F-35 got within gun range as "stealth is obsolete", not realizing that those were either through favourable conditions or because the aircraft was deliberately handicapped to test the systems.
It's actually a 20:1 win loss in dogfighting (BFM) and a 178:0 beyond visual range (BVR) now

What people fail to understand is that: 1 trillion involves maintenance, software, operator training, and other costs for its operational life until 2070. No "Legacy"/"Teen Series" fighter development (F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18) has been calculated this way.
A capabilities insight:
"Those situations highlight the fifth-generation capabilities of the F-35. We’re still able to operate and be successful. In a lot of cases we have a large role as an integrated quarterback,” said Lt. Col. Yosef Morris, 4th FS commander. “Our ability to continue to fuse and pass information to the entire package makes every aircraft more survivable.”
During the first week of Red Flag, the F-35 pilots flew in a larger force of Blue Air in a counter-air mission. More than 60 aggressor aircraft were flying against them, blinding many of the fourth-generation aircraft with “robust” electronic attack capabilities.
“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” Wood said. “This is not a mission you want a young pilot flying in. My wingman was a brand new F-35A pilot, seven or eight flights out of training. He gets on the radio and tells an experienced, 3,000-hour pilot in a very capable fourth-generation aircraft. ‘Hey bud, you need to turn around. You’re about to die. There’s a threat off your nose.’”
The young pilot then “killed” the enemy aircraft and had three more kills in the hour-long mission.
“Even in this extremely challenging environment, the F-35 didn’t have many difficulties doing its job,” Wood said. ‘That’s a testament to the pilot’s training and the capabilities of the jet.”
"Hill Airmen, F-35 a lethal combo at Red Flag"-AF .
The F-35, despite all the Woozle/disinformation effect on the fighter, will be the main face of Western fighter aviation for decades to come.

The C is NOT STOVL/VTOL. Has larger wings with foldable wingtip sections, larger control surfaces for improved low-speed control, stronger landing gear for the stresses of carrier arrested landings, a twin-wheel nose gear, and a stronger tailhook for use with carrier arrestor cables. The larger wing area allows for decreased landing speed while increasing both range and payload.
Seriously? How could they mess this up? :D

6:14 fun fact, F35 wasn't designed to supercruise, the body design was better than anticipated
"... that's good news, add a million on the price tag"
Except it's not really able to supercruise, it just keep enough momentum to stay above mach for a while when it stops the afterburner
And since it's not really able to stay above mach for extended periods of time (more that a minute) to keep its coating, the plane is even less a supercruiser
Generally, you don't want to fly supersonic with a stealth aircraft anyway. It heats up the body temperature of the aircraft, making it easy to spot on the infrared. And it makes them less maneuverable. Most aircraft try to avoid flying supersonic for this reason. They will only do so when they have no other option. It's very rare for fighter jets to go supersonic. Generally only around 1% of their total flight time.
@@jugel4533 coating? The radar deflecting shizz is built into the metal thing itself.
@@benanders4412 The F-22 allegedly has supercruise and unless the composite skin can't handle a few hundred degrees C then heat is not a problem for either skin or infrared. The jet from the engine exhaust is near a 1000 degrees or there abouts which is the actual source of infrared energy that FLIR systems track and what weapon systems lock onto.
The actual reason it isn't done is because it's quite inefficient to travel above about mach 0.8 (the transonic range), esspecially for anything that isn't time sensitive. This drag level remains high even at high mach levels but at the tail end of the transonic range the drag starts dropping again enough to maybe warrant flying at that speed if it's necessary (which it generally isn't)

I used to work at a marine corps air station but I’ve been moved to a marine corp camp. The few F35 B’s we saw turned heads and they were the coolest planes that were stationed there, aside from the F16’s, which would roar all the way down the strip. The F35’s were surprisingly quiet while in VTOL mode, quieter than the AV8 harriers despite having more total thrust. 3:24 The F-35A is actually equipped with a GAU-22, which is a 4-barrel version of the 5-barreled GAU-12.
The F-35 C cannot vertically land or take off, it's major differences are foldable wings and beefed up landing gear. The F-35 B can vertically land and take off on shorter runways.
The F-35 is the equivalent to what the M16 was in the 1960s. Give it time and it'll be perfected, and still be affordable.
Let me know when I can get one off PSA
Affordable is not a word i would use for the f-35. It's far more expensive than most other aircraft to both buy and maintain. The f-35 has come a long way. And it's a good aircraft overall. But the original project as a whole to replace the f-15/f-16/f-18/a-10 and the harrier with just one cheap mass production aircraft can be called a failure. It's one of the major weaknesses of the aircraft. Other countries can field 3 aircraft of the 4+ generation for the same price as one f-35. This could become a huge problem if other countries can develop radar or missiles better capable of tracking stealth aircraft. Stealth the one advantage the f-35 has over 4+ generation aircraft. If they solve that one problem {they probably will in time} it's just a more expensive inferior aircraft.
@@benanders4412 Maintain yes it's more expensive, to buy not anymore. They've managed to reduce the unit price of the F-35 to less than that of many of its fourth gen competitors (including the Gripen, Eurofighter, F-15EX, etc)
But its development grind so much funds from US, NATO and their allies. And the plane’s performance does not meet its expectation except the Israel version (looks like its used different software than the America version). Constant bugs from software continuously delay the release date, the technology, frameshift or material not meet expectation due to its concept go ahead of a time is common and acceptable, but software continuously bugs on 21st century looks like a joke.
Yes maybe in 100 times or maybe 1000 years

Not necessarily or at least to the same degree.
So, for instance the purely theoretical but today impractical so bordering on impossible theory of creating a quantum storm in a designated part of the sky could "illuminate" a stealth aircraft in a way that wouldn't do much to detecting a 4th generation aircraft. The -35 has its uses but it’s not worth the price tag. Israel, for instance, looks to it’s going to be using its F-35 fleet primarily for light precision bombing & (probably) surveillance, roles it’s really quite well suited for. In the past the Israeli’s have relied on F-16s & F-15s to take out vital strategic targets-The Iraqi & Syrian nuclear reactor sites come to mind. The -35 is a much better option for that kind of mission. The -35 isn’t set up well to serve as an interceptor or CAS unit but they don’t need it for that.

^LightningAssault that's the F-35B you're describing, it typically uses a rolling short takeoff to increase payload/reduce fuel consumption compared to a purely vertical takeoff
As the F-35C doesn't have the vertical lift system it cannot vector its thrust down perpendicular to the ground so vertical takeoff is impossible
@@milney yes of course. I was just saying the B can technically take off vertically but it's not efficient to do so.
@@Errorcutive swivel engine technology has already been around before the Yak-141 though (Beside the Convair, the BAe's P.1216 design and its relatives already featured a swivel nozzle at the rear of the engine)
Very good job fellows!! Beautiful work. Love to see how the art and visuals have improved so much over the years!
So much improvement in the art since I found this channel back in 2015
Love hearing you talk about aircraft!!
1:20 In the 1990s, my father was an engineer on the Boeing design team for the X-32A. He couldn't help always remarking that the stubby-winged fighter was "an ugly duckling of an airplane".
Snubnose f-35 is so much sexier.
@@corrat4866 I agree. In term of looks, the F-35 is a work of art.
This video and the one you guys made on the T-34 are my two favourite videos uploaded to this channel. Keep it up!
Ok so, there are a few issues I can see with the video:
1. The F-35C cannot perform vertical takeoffs, as it isn't equipped with neither the LiftFan nor the pivoting engine nozzle, it only has larger wings and control surfaces, stronger landing gear, and a tailhook, and other nudges for carrier landings.
2. The F-35 cannot supercruise, its engine doesn't produce enough power to do so.
3. Only the F-35C has double nose gear, the others had single nosewheels.
4. All F-35s have the EOTS sensor below the nose (small detail issue in the model, not directly mentioned in the video though).
But otherwise, the animations and models are very good. Please watch out for possible issues in future videos.
#2 is debateable, we don't know if it can or can't, its classified.
@@fcscouto It isn't classified, the F-35 just can't supercruise.
@@amogus1981 again, its max performance is not disclosed publicly, you literally are talking about something you do not have all the information about. Its actually kinda funny how confident you are about something that isn't public knowledge
@@fcscouto Dude, the F-35 *cannot* supercruise unless in some sort of dive, it can barely even maintain supersonic speed with afterburners. Otherwise, stick to Mach
plus, you're replying to a comment from 4 months ago, are you really trying to disprove a factual claim? (yes it can technically attain mach 1.2 without afterburners but that's for short distances and probably in a dive)
I’m just imagining the poor controller like aye you got a bandit 30nm out and the pilot being like yeah man saw him when I took off you can take a break😂
If it was developed in 1995, imagine what they have now
An overpriced piece of junk the F22 is better
@@AmericanKiaser35
In what field? Excluding anti fighter and interception it has nothing over the f35
@@AmericanKiaser35 “Local reformist thinks we should all be fighting with tree top level, non radar equipped, gun jets”

F 35s are iconic and memorable and I think Lockheed Martin put lot of effort into this and their aircraft are respected but this one is the most respected
I've grown to really like these things. If I join the Air Force, I'll do my best to see if I can become a pilot of one! :)
LOVE THE ARTWORK AND THE VIDEO IN GENERAL
I love this animation, and the way you explained it 😁
the f-35C is NOT a VTOL aircraft, it's upgraded with a longer wingspan and stronger landing gear to operate from carriers
Can we just appreciate the quality animation of the jets? Nicely done.
The sound recording is great!
The F-35 is MUCH louder then the F-16. In Norway noise was never a problem with the F-16s, but with the F-35s, farmers have had to put down their animals because they were terrified by the sound. On Ørland main air base over 220 ground owners have sued the state because of the sound.
Lmao I used to think this would only be a problem or even possible here in Germany. Anyways since we Germans are also getting the F35 now and the “people“ (leftists, other degenerates and eldery people) here love to complain about literally everything it‘ll be sure funny to see how this ends up. But this seems to be common in western Europe xD
I heard Canada is getting plenty of F35 Jets to replace their old fleet of aircraft. That's insane...
We do definitely need some upgrades.
Good for them. Funny that Trudeau was said will never buy F-35 back in 2016, what a liar he is
Same with germany i think
Cracking up over here! Loved how J-dam bombs and external drop tanks were fired like missiles! 😂😂😂
thank you! I don't really understand why people don't talk about more on this here, it was repeated like 5 times. realism vs animators 1:0
Been seeing these from my backyard lately, seems like they’re conducting a lot of training exercises.
Ur animation work is outstandingly beautiful...
Thank you so much Simple History for your hard work. This is one of my favourite episodes that you had made. Keep up the good work.
be better if they fact checked their work first. The F35 C can not take off vertically.
They got it mixed with tye b
Whenever someone tries to talk about the F-35 a whole bunch of morons always butt in and say stupid crap like it is slow because the top speed of the F-16 is faster, bar the fact the F-16 can not reach it's top speed with the external fuel tanks and weapons it has to carry to be of any use (unlike the F-35), or that it was beat in a dogfight vs an F-16 (bar the fact it was a prototype F-35 that had strict flight control computer limits that prevented it from performing as well as it could).
ye i agree, lots of idiots in these comments saying that some old a*s soviet aircraft from the 80's/90's can kill this thing no problem, one of the worst cases was when someone said that the a-10 can easily kill it :DDDD
The -16 is still much faster than the -35. It’s a light, purpose built air superiority fighter. The -35 is a slug.
@@grahamstrouse1165 What part of of drag do you not understand?!
The F-16 with a realistic loadout of weapons and fuel is going to be much, much slower than it's rated top speed!
my favorite is all the people speaking so confidently about performance capabilities that are classified.
Lets find the reformists in the comments
I know they are not cheap, baby. But at least we Finns can afford a fleet or two of them :-) And we have excellent pilots to fly them too, as you already very well have known before. Awesome!
Aside from the stealth characteristics - which I think the Lockheed Martin engineers and scientists solved, using the technology from F-22 - the WTOL capability is difficult. That probably will not be such a problem for us Finns as the F-35 variant we purchase does not need such a feature.
There are multiple technical issues with WTOL. I am amazed by the fact that the Americans solved those problems! My kudos to all the scientists and engineers. You are my heroes. I love you, people.
For example, downward thrust causes an extreme dust intake back into the engines. Depending on the ground content below, of course. But you cannot expect to land on a clean tarmac surface, now can you? The other thing, known by the helicopter pilots, is the negative air pressure underneath the aircraft. It is potentially lethal. It means that the downward thrust causes a kind of vacuum below, resulting in a total loss of lift. Then the craft will just drop. You cannot do anything to prevent it. Pilots do know about that phenomenon so they avoid staying in one place for too long time.
This kind of stuff.
These crafts are like the ones in the TV series Space 1999 - Moonbase Alpha. The dream come true. Sure, providing spare parts is a huge problem. But adding for example Finns to the arsenal support is a smart move: We can build many of the parts 🙂 The Americans know that.
I love F-35, absolutely.
"Why was the F-35 so expensive and why did it take so long?"
Because the project resulted in 3 different jets. The F-35A, F-35B and F-35C really only have their outer appearance in common.
too many fingers in the pie. it could be an even better platform if it wasn't designed for carriers and stovl too.
@@francinii I agree, for the "jacks of all trades" type I prefer the french Rafale, the F-35 should be more specialist than generalist.
US can afford this kind of specialists, their industry is insanely facinating, they should use this capability
@@bruhman5385 it's already seeming to go that way in the next fighter generation! The Navy has their own plans for a dedicated platform in the F/A-XX program(seemingly the F-35C isn't enough to replace the Super Hornet) and the Air Force has their separate plans too in the NGAD.
The day of specialists like the Tomcat returning is an exciting proposition
@@MikoyanGurevichMiG21
I'm really interested of what this next generation of planes/tanks will looks like, has been so many improvements on so many different fields in the the past 20years! The tech gap is huge
@@bruhman5385 A specialist fighter isn't super useful in modern conflict where an F35 can still easily secure air superiority, and then also continue to be used as a strike aircraft, whereas a dedicate fighter only would be essentially useless after the opening of the conflict.
Despite you prefering the Rafale, western militaries and experts all around the world who have tested both very much prefer the F-35 and I trust what they have to say about it.
Great I really like these types of coverage of things
Love the ending of the men quietly working on the plane.
Very nice animations!
The C-model is a CATOBAR, not VTOL. Only the B-model has the VTOL/STOVL. I love simple history, but I would have expected something as major as that to be correctly presented.
Yes, the video states a vertical take off ability for the C which is incorrect.
@@Crunch104 yes, this youtube video presents the F-35C has having vertical takeoff and landing ability, but that is incorrect
Haven’t seen a US/NATO fighting vehicle review video on this channel that is this impressive since the M1 Abrams video.
Beautiful illustrations. I mostly stayed for them.
I love seeing now under spectre of war the tone change in this channel.
3:48 I’ve never heard of the F-35C’s VTOL abilities…
“Command, we may have a little fucky-wucky down here”
They also falsely claimed it can super cruise. Only the F-22 can do that.
@@HarrisonGoldfarb It technically can't supercruise, but can maintain mach 1.2 for a short time. The F-22 can do it better.
@@WolfeSaber9933 I know it can use afterburners to achieve supersonic speeds, but I'm referring to super cruising, which is supersonic speeds, WITHOUT afterburners.
@@HarrisonGoldfarb I know. I just looked up if the F-35 could supercruise, where the afterburner is not used.

Would love to have one of these for my birthday
Fact Check: mixed up the B and C variants on takeoff characteristics. The B has the vertical take off and landing, where as the C is just short take off and landing.
Some inaccuracies here and there but an honest and balanced video. Would be cool if they did a video on the F-15 and/or F-22.
Now that Australia has developed the Loyal Wingman drones that can link up with F35's and help to protect it and fight via AI, Australia's F35 fleet has become a lot deadlier.
I believe that will be the greatest asset the f35 will be known for, it has the most processing power of any aircraft ever made, commanding drones would be crazy
That’s news to me. They’ve talked about it, but so have a lot of other countries. The idea of yoking a wing of unmanned bomb/missile trucks to a manned F-35 is promising but no such drone exists to date.
3:22 the F-35 uses the GAU-22/A which is a lighter four-barrel derivative of the GAU-12/U.
I never thought i would be interested in this, but with the current situation in mind, i think this is a great and impressive project.
