Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology. The story is based on Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. You shall set out as the Destined One to venture into the challenges and marvels ahead, to uncover the obscured truth beneath the veil of a glorious legend from the past.

Basically from this clip, we can sure the game's story happens AFTER the story of Journey To The West.
To understand what's happen, here's what you can learn before the game, since the game may assume you know the whole story and the basic structure of Chinese mythology system.
Here's some key information and basic Chinese mythology structure:
1. There are 3 realms: God realm (or sky if you prefer, because it's high above in sky), Human realm (or ground, overworld, simple), and the Dead realm (underground). Normally, there're no multi-dimension or dimension warp, just sky, ground, underground (Tears of the Kingdom, but way more camouflaged), even no teleport, just sheer speed.
2. All 3 realms are administrated by god in God realm.
3. There're 2 major god affinity: 天庭 (TianTing. Character by Character: Sky governor/administration) mainly Taoism, and 西天(XiTian. CbC: the West Sky/God (admin.), or called by their location 灵山 (LingShan, Cbc: the spiritual valley)) mainly Buddhism. There're no clear information suggest that LingShan is govern by TianTing or not(It's controversial), just treat them like Greece Patheon and Nordic Asgard will just fine. (yes, two belief in one mythology system).
4. ANYTHING can become godhood. Yes anything, human, living thing, non-living thing.
5. To become godhood, that thing must absorb enough "essence". There're many way to achieve this, like absorb other object that possess essence (find natural essence fountain, find precious essence vessel, hunt demi-god, hunt human), or yourself ARE originally the essence object once some god did something and grant that for you.
6. A god hardly dies from aging (in a handful of time), that's the reason why most OBJECT wants to become godhood. Or most non-human object wants to become human.
7. Dead one will be brought to Dead realm, and judge by the God of Dead, he will decide that you can have your next life or lock and punished in Dead realm. Punish may be permanently. Reborn is random among human and non-human. (This concept seems common in mythology worldwide)
8. God can be killed, and go to process 7 as normal human does, that said god will lose all it's power. But when a god is dead, and if it is achieved by attacking, that immense attack power will 90% assure that your soul is completely shattered and vanish into nothing, no soul to do realm shift, no afterlife.
9. A punish among the god is just sent you to 7: reborn as human, to the very beginning. But if this is for a non-human demi-god or demi-devil, is an ascension into human being, officially admitted.
10. There're primordial gods, they exist even before the world was created (pangaea period if you prefer), and they still alive. Possess significantly higher power even than most of TianTing gods. They do not have affinity with any god organization, they live their own and almost won't interfere with anything among 3 realms.
11. 1 day in God Realm, 1 year in Human realm, no matter what you are.
And the main story of Sun WuKong from Journey To The West, I'll keep that simple and only extract the key aspect and key story node:
Once there was a disaster in pangaea period, a primordial god used some stones to fix it. One of which drops in a essence area, thousands of years later, it becomes a monkey, named Sun WuKong.
Sun lives with other monkey, but other monkey dies from aging. He wants to escape from a certain dead. Knowing that there're gods across the sea can teach him godhood skills, so he went sail, and find a primordial god. He learns the basic combat skills, transformation, and an extremely fast travel skill. After this, the primordial expelled him for his arrogant and impatience, and Sun go backs home, only find all his monkey fellows dies from aging.
Life still goes on, Sun make friend with several local demi-devil in his valley, grants full control over the area. However, Sun hardly find a suitable weapon for himself. Rumors said that there're handful of fine-tuned weapon inside the East DragonGod's palace. Sun dives under the ocean and almost torn the palace inside out, ends up taking a giant iron pillar as his weapon. Turns out this pillar was an ancient god-relic, pinned in the east sea to settle the tide. It can stretch into any size as the master want. Sun makes the weapon as small as a needle, put in his ear, and leave the palace.
Hundreds years later, Sun also reaches his "Destined" age, and the god from Dead realm come and take him to underworld.
Sun is extremely angry with this so called destined age. He smashes half of the Dead realm upsidedown, forcing the God of Dead remove all of the monkey species from aging death principle, resulting all of the monkey cheats from aging permanently.
TianTing think this sh*t may hard to deal with force. One god suggests that they can pacify Sun with a mere horseman job in TianTing. The order conducted and Sun is very happy with this, thinks the gods bows to his power and makes a treaty with a valuable seat. When Sun realized the truth, he's furious, extremely.
He come back to his valley, and address himself as 齐天大圣 (QiTianDaSheng. Cbc: Grand Sage/Master which Equivalent As God/Sky). Knowing this happened, TianTing launched an assault, and it almost becomes an all-out war. There're several campaign and treaty, in one of the treaty, Sun grants Iron Skin (extremely durable skin, especially head) from TianTing's property he stole.
In the final conflict, one primordial serves in TianTing managed to capture Sun and locked him into a kiln, trying to ash him, because they can't kill him by normal god weaponry (Iron Skin). But Sun managed to find a breach inside the kiln. The fire makes no harm, but instead fuse his eyes with immense precision, grant him Omni-Vision (eagle eye in Assassin's Creed, detect stealth and camouflage). After that, Sun breaks free from the kiln, and the war goes on.
The leader of TianTing try to stop this, and summon the Grand Buddha in LingShan to stop that monkey. Sun fight against the Buddha, but failed to escape and being defeat by just one hand (yes, a single HUGE slam). The Grand Buddha pinned down his body under a mountain for 500 years.
500 years later, the Grand Buddha needs to spread Buddhism in Human Realm (around A.D. 630), ordered the Golden Cicada, his second apprentice, reborn as human Tang SanZang in overworld to achieve this mission. After he grew up and becomes a respected monk, he persuaded the emperor to address him into a journey to the LingShan, to retrieve Buddhism scripture back to the empire.
The journey begins with Sun being rescued by Tang, and ends up with the team reaches LingShan successfully, all of them becomes godhood under Buddhism at a quite high level, including Sun.
During the journey, they encountered countless of demi-devil and monster, all of them was killed by the team, or pacified by TianTing or LingShan reinforcement. And all the pacified creature, are either the servant from TianTing or LingShan.
You may noticed that the journey itself is short here, but actually the main journey takes 90% of the actual novel. Since the game is for WuKong himself, knowing the story of him is more important. The actual journey is about how the team come accross different creature and how to get rid of them, and the growth of the team itself, can horizontally expand.
As Chinese Internet community grows, people finds some other explanation of the Journey To The West, about what does this story wants to tell us.
For a lighter version, this is just a child story, a story of adventure. Sun gets officially godhood under Buddhism through his hardwork, everyone has a good ending.
And also a darker, unofficial version. Sun's fighting spirit reaches it's peak in the war against TianTing, start died out after his imprison, and finally dies when he becomes a Buddha. The whole story is about how a children becomes an adult (or the fall of a warrior, from different perspective), and two god organization seeks to expand their own territory and belief. Applying the same principle to all the demi-devil and monster during the journey, you will find it's far beyond an adventure story.
This is where the "BLACK myth" comes from, the darker version of Journey To The West explanation theory.
Since the game is not release, we (Chinese community) are looking forward to see what theory does Game Science has choose, and base on that theory, how far will they expand from the original story horizontally. Right now, we can assure that it's not a children's tale.
By knowing these information, you can rewatch the 2023 trailer right now, open the subtitle, and you will know that every sentence is a different creature's own perspective towards the so called "Destiny". I've got to say that some English subtitle cannot convey the full meaning of original Chinese without adding footnote.

And if you want to learn speak Chinese, keep in mind that Chinese is carry out by pronounce and tone, different tone means completely different word.
If you manage to toning well, your Chinese will leap from OK to absolutely fking well.
the reason Black Myth Wukong reveal trailer was so hyped not only bcs it has nextgen graphic, but bcs it is 12 minute trailer that most of it showed us gameplay (which many game reveal failed to do so) with Wukong unique abilities and great enemy design.
the gameplay is absolutely god tier (no pun intended), I knew nothing about this game until last week and im now fully invested to it
As a Chinese gamer/anime enjoyer, I am just more than thrilled to learn that a game oriented from our culture will inspire gamers all around the world, and we are glad to know that you guys are asking questions, being curious about the storyline of the game. I see my fellows are giving your key information about this game and journey to the west, but I don’t think we can get a solid answer with the game is not officially released 😂, btw you are so smart, that tudigong “土地公” (short elder with slight hunchback and a walking staff) did implied that he looks so similar to wukong.
I don’t have this habit of leaving a comment when watching ytb videos, but I feel truly related after you joked about learning Chinese. For years and on, game and anime companies/producers in China couldn’t come up with something that deeply represents our traditional culture, and I feel really bad about how elaborately good those Japanese animes which pretty much copied from Chinese culture were made (such as some part of Dragon Ball and most part of Naruto). But now we have black myth wokong, and your guys are also eager to play this game, I genuinely hope Game Science is not trolling and every gamer should enjoy this game🤩🤩🤩.

This is the first trailer of , and when Game Science announced this trailer they're only about 30 people in this company ! The reason they made this trailer was for recruit pro to join their team, and to tell the China market what they are doing ! As a Chinese and a fan , I was shocked by this trailer , because there was no one can do the real China classic style of in my imagination before , until this game trailer came out in 2020 !
You may have many questions in this trailer , I can tell you some point : This game story happens after , and this monkey isn't Wukon . The real Wukon is near ending part who is wearing gold armor and the hat with two "beard" , and had powerful weapon 如意金箍棒 in hand !
I guess the game story is this monkey step on the journey that Wukon has been through in , maybe the monkey is searching something or he want to fullfill some goal or achieve some purpose , there must be a reason to make this monkey be the destin one and to get challeng all the way !
The Dynasty Warrior's part.
That's Wukong fighting the 100 Thousand Heavenly Army. In the early chapters of Journey to The West, Wukong causes a lot of problems in every realm, and after multiple attempts at keeping him in check peacefully, the Heaven's lost their patience and issue a death warrant, Wukong retaliate with everything he got. He was determined hit everyone with his staff (which weight 7960kgs,17550lbs for Americans), possibly only sparing the god of Gold Star, a benevolent old god who's the kindest to him and always protected him against heaven's punishments and plays mediator role between him and heaven.
At the time of Wukong's battle against the Heavenly Army, there was only 1 god (Yang Jian, or better known for his title Er-Lang Shen) who could match him in strength, but he was away, so Wukong wreak absolute havoc on the rest of heaven's forces
Love ur reaction as always❤, here are my answers of ur question:
1. Not every enemy the Destined One kill, but some mini boss or NPC. Once you get the Key Item from them( it can be anything, like the weapon of fire wolf or the Corrupted Heart of the Taoist Priest), choose one to equip. Then shapeshifting is available with No Mana cost but long CD. It's like the Spartan Rage, limited time, time reduced if u get hurt.
2. Ur speculation makes sense. From some leaked pictures, the old monk is a monkey god. So he's likely to the Old WuKong, memorizing the past of the tough journey. The one with Gold Staff is the Original WuKong, 'cause the equipments are the same as the ones in novel. Different timeline, I guess. But the Destined One is surely not WuKong himself, maybe a powerful clone or doppelganger, or maybe the Six-ears Macaque who can perfectly modify himself as WuKong.
3. The game's timeline is After the story of JTTW. Since WuKong was powerful before the journey, but he wasn't granted, like Kratos before he claimed Ares's throne and God's name.

No kidding,when this trailer released at 2020,first time I watch it,I literally cried.
I know I've seen a scene where the player dies and an animation of a hair snapping starts and a golden hair goes to the last shrine they visited and the hair becomes the player...so we play as a hair clone of wukong is my understanding
They made this trailer in unreal 4, some point down the road they decided to move to unreal 5. This move sounded alarms for a lot of people, but the luanch date trailer put some ease back. 😂
On the downside, some players are concerned about the game depth. Ultimately, sun wukong only has 1 weapon, the staff. In view of many games now have a huge repertoire of weapons, its an extremely difficult task to keep game play fresh. Considering the number of enemies we see, this might be a moderately lengthy game. The "nostalgia" factor can help with this, but its mainly for chinese players who are familiar with the original literature. This isnt so for the western players.
Honestly I kind of figured that the western side might struggle to stick with it, but I want to try to keep with it because the game and everything around it is just beautiful

The cicada disguise is only able to fool low level enemies, but not higher levels. That’s why the big enemy detected him.

In the book, Wukong loves to turn into fly or bugs and sneak into the caves of Yaoguai or Demons and even the most powerful Demon King, couldnt detect him...but ofc they cant allow that to happen in the game 😂.

This game was one of the biggest reasons I got into Journey to the west and it became my favorite story. I highly recommend reading them or watch overly sarcastic productions!
Also for the six eared macaque, he imitates Wukong to get the scriptures for himself so he will be worshipped and be seen as a hero forever. He possesses all the abilities Sun Wukong has and they are both equally match.
None of the gods can figure out who the Macaque was due to him being disguised as Wukong so perfectly, only the Buddha can. So when Buddha exposed him, Macaque try to run, but was bound by Buddha's bowl and Wukong killed him.
It definitely starting making more sense when all of you explain it, I really appreciate you guys for answering all of my questions, cause im super interested in this now.

For starters, we definitely know the playable Monkey is not wukong. The golden one at the end, with unmistakable engraving on his staff (如意金箍棒) and the iconic armor was the original
The monkey could be one of the Four Dimitrios Monkeys (Those were 4 magical monkeys that are... different, in a way realm/reality rules don't always apply to them).
They're Enlighted Stone Monkey(Wukong), 6-ear Macaque (fake Wukong), Through Arm Ape and Red Bottom Macaque.
This is how I differentiate the 4. Using more comedic representation
Enlighten: I can tell this is a problem. (Doesn't mean he can solve it, but he can instintively find the help neccesary)
6-ear: After looking at it, this is the nature of the problem (Doesn't mean he can identify it to begin with, but hey, he understand the problem, and could find the necessary help)
Red Bottom: This is how to avoid/work around the problem (Doesn't mean he can change anything about it, but at least he'll definitely survive the problem)
Through Arm: This is how to make it not a problem. (Doesn't mean he won't make everything worse when trying to change things) *Think solving a faulty, beeping fire alarm by removing it's batteries*
Enlighten simply understand things and direction he'll always find his way (never needing a map), 6-ear can understand causal factor and is very observant (Which helps him impersonate Wukong)
You mentioned 6-ear monkey, so I'll elaborate a bit on 6-ear and what it was.
6-ear was very powerful, there's practically no difference between 6-ear and the original Wukong. 6-ear was so similar to Wukong, even Wukong's master restraint spell, and the heavenly kings "Monster reveal mirror" couldn't differentiate the two... The great Buddha Guanyin also had a go and express she couldn't tell the difference. The Divine Beast Diting had a go... He could tell the very minor difference, but don't dare to make a call in fear of chances of actually being wrong and subject the real Wukong to danger. (Goes to show the similarity is so striking even with evidence, you'd still be doubting yourself)
The current popular theory is this story take place after the original story, and something went amiss in the process and the world is turned on it's head. (Many demons escaped, and a lot that were slain somehow came back alive and went back to where they were)
As such they need another Magical monkey to retake the journey to fix things with the Wukong acting as some kind of guide (As the original Wukong have become the buddha of war, he's now part of a realm and can no longer affect things like he did in the past)
Even though 6-ear was taken away by the Buddha, which should mean he's also out of the equation for the task of reshaping the realm, there's still a chance of it being 6-ear
There's 2 more candidate out of the 4 monkeys... Outside of the Enlighten monkey (Wukong), and 6-ear Macaque (fake wukong), the 2 remaining are Red Bottom Macaque, and Through Arm Ape.
Red Bottom Macaque, while also powerful, he's more of a "ability to understand, integrate and survive any situation/realm" type. Chances are, rather than fighting, Red Bottom will just try to survive in the new, chaotic reality. He probably don't care even if heaven and earth all turn into hell, he'll survive and thrive... Unless, he conclude that in order to survive this new reality, he needs to take the journey.
Through Arm Ape is... while not as "smart and adept" as the other 3, he's powerful like the other, with his main strength being good with communication and knowledgeable in reshaping or affecting causal factor. As such, he'll need guidance from many, including Wukong, you also see many gods/monsters talking to him and in a sense "Point him to the right direction" because unlike the other 3, the instinct of finding/understanding things as they were is not quite his strength.
So Through Arm Ape is a very likely candidate.

In JTTW in battle between wukong and liu-er-duo (6 ear monkey) , all deity and god unable to difference who is real wukong because both are lookalike same voice same ability and staff. but only buddha know. Wukong at first was a Taoist learner , he rebel and fight all god in heaven (cause of dictatorship) and only buddha can win over him. He need to become a buudhist monk as condition to release(after 500 years locked below huge rock) .So there is debating on this battle, some reader said buddha want to eliminate the real one (rebellion) and make the imposter continue the journey. So for your question, no1. in story wukong can form anyone as he learned art of 72 taoist but in games may limited for certain character. No2. wukong staff is ru-yi jin-gu-bang other monkey is sui-xin jin-gu-bang (both staff are same meaning). So the last one should be real wukong No3. In story JTTW wukong is ageless (wukong steal heaven peaches and ate most of it, one peach is 100 year old) may be in games is difference.
im not gonna lie this was really cool to reason, especially learning the staff names, but it is a pretty cool debate to have whenever it comes to Wukong and his look a like
