But in all seriousness, I’ve been going back to this video so much over the years! I think it satisfies a primal urge in my brain. I love it
The best part about this is the fact that it sounds exactly like the original. OK, maybe not exactly, but it's close enough for me. Great work!
The instrument they use the floppies for matches their sound pretty closely, which is why this is one of those tracks where they heavily rely on the floppies (unlike some other tracks, where the printer/scanner/whatever it is gets used for the main melody).
The thing is, the floppy drive system is the one with the fancy volume effects and such, so basically, floppy drive system that's fully specced out using the printer/scanner/whatever as a fallback for the more "beepy" sounds (which it's suited to) and having the hard-disk-drum-system doing it's usual thing (which is usually close enough due to it's nature) is one of the closest fits that the system is likely to get.
As an example of when they use the printer/scanner/whatever as the primary, see Ghostbusters ( czcams.com/video/0XhxUT9vWCg/video.html ) - note that it's good at doing pitch bends, but has a very generic sound and might well not even have volume control (someone check this?), so it sounds like PC Beeper output (which has similar properties) by comparison.
Meanwhile the sound the floppies make is very much *specific* to the form of this instrument, and they may also be having pitch limitations - note that a sound which doesn't seem to be normal for the floppies comes in during the higher parts of this E1M1 track (around 2 secs after 0:50), which might well be the printer/scanner/whatever covering up for a limitation.
Nah.
It may sound close because the 32X had a similar sound on the YM2612 synth chip on the Genesis.

The "Floppotron" in it's younger iterations was part of the inspiration that got me into the embedded programming field, way back in the early 2010's. The very next thing I did after learning "hello world" on a 4x20 LCD was I created a musical floppy drive trio, inspired by the early Floppotron. Would have used more drives, but only had 3 on hand at that time.
