Just a reminder to anyone that forgot, he glanced over this by just including it, but remember to switch from your summer to winter kit.

My family has "get home bag" competitions during our holiday get togethers. Lol

This is really important. I've used mine a couple of times. Boy I was glad I had it updated. I got stranded 20 miles from home at 3am. All o could do was walk home. Took me 4 hours, bit made it safely.

Store your pens with the writing side down. It keeps them from drying out as fast.

Zippers...definitely need to check them. A motorcyclist passed me and his zipper on his bag was open. I waved him down at the next stoplight, and he zipped it, then in less than a minute the zipper jiggled down the side and I didn’t see him again because he was ahead of me, but he should have had a zip tie to hold that shut at least.

I would add a silcock key to the mini tool kit, and cash in small denominations. Thanks for sharing.

One thing I always suggest to people is a laminated rand McNally map, and a wax pen or a wet erase marker. Easy way to route plan and not destroy your maps.

I have added a laminated list of items added to all my bags. It helps to get a quick overview and you can find missing items a lot quicker and replace them again. There is also an information for adding extra items. Especially if you are in a hurry or in stress like in an emergency it helps you to stay calm and not forget anything. There is something like "add additional water, food, your keys etc. before you go" included. So I would recommend a kind of list to all your bags guys. stay safe!

When you go through your get home bag for inspection, make yourself a detailed inventory list of everything in there and which compartment that it's stowed in. Put that list in a zip-lock bag and store it in the smallest/easiest-to-get-to part of your pack. This will keep you from having to tear through your whole kit just to find the one thing that you need. We all keep a lot of stuff in these bags (sometimes too much) and forget what all is in there. When you add or ditch a piece of gear, update your list.

If you use cheap film type space blankets make sure and check them or replace them every few years. I got an old one out and was very surprised to find all the reflective material had disappeared and i basically had a large square of thin transparent plastic that wasn't good for much.

I like your whole kit. In mine I have a flashlight attached outside the bag. Inside the bag are other lights but the batteries are removed , in a baggie attached to the individual light. That way I don’t have to worry about ruining lights or electronics by corroded batteries. The flashlight on the outside can be checked often & used to find whatever I need in the bag.

Thank you for a very good reminder to keep things in good condition as well as each time we go through a bag, it cements in our minds exactly where each item is. I live where we had a significant earthquake this past March, and though I didn't need to evacuate, I spent the afternoon that day reassessing my bag, including pet supplies, and that helped me keep calm during some of the early and strong aftershocks- it is very reassuring to know you are prepared!

A good and timely reminder I need to go through mine. It’s amazing how many uses the get home bag has even in a non emergency situation. I remember one time I had to take the tarp out of mine to cover a load that was on a trailer. I was very glad to have had the get home bag and tarp.
