This has to be the best visual representation of being in an abusive relationship ever. Feeling totally helpless like you just got your arms cut off, losing passion for the things you used to love, not receiving the support and care you desperately need from the person who's supposed to care about you...... The gerbil in the cage metaphor at the end always really stuck with me. This one hits close to home.
I personally thought it was a metaphor for gang violence, but this is really interesting too
A metaphor for gang violence 🤦🏾♀️ sigh wow

What separates this from other cheesy heartbreak songs is it based on Thundercat grieving over the loss of his friend Mac Miller and its slow tempo really shows the hurt.

It's insane to me how talented this dude is, but also how he doesn't take himself seriously. Pure art.
You can't take yourself too seriously in Jazz. There's no "right way" to play. Mistakes create some of the coolest chord progression transitions. This is Soul or RnB, but the same rules of Jazz apply, which is basically, "if it sounds good, play it".
Do you listen to tyler
@@manictiger not even talking musically. but how he carries himself outside of that, he’s a goofball. funny ass guy
Talented he is, however this is Shugie Otis, Brothers Johnson, Ohio Players and Gino Vannelli of the 70’s. Give those artist a listen and then you’ll see how “talented” he is.
Honestly art like this doesn't ever get the respect it deserves

This video and the lyrics are the perfect depiction of what it felt like to get Lyme disease and losing my ability to sing professionally. The horrible, physical pain and the emotional pain of losing a God given talent--and having to watch everyone you used to soar and perform with moving on without you. It feels so devastating. But as the follow-up video to this, you have to make peace with your loved ones who seemed insensitive towards you when you were suffering --and find your new identity to find your way back to joy. ❤
I have Lyme disease too! I know exactly what you're talking about. I was never a singer but I was an athlete. My biggest symptom from Lyme disease is exhaustion and headaches. I just don't feel like myself anymore. And the worst part is everyone's judging you for not having energy or not being able to get much done outside of daily tasks to survive. Because it's an invisible illness. I hope you're one of the people who get better after a few years ❤
Bless you guys. Hope you two are doing well today.

Deep in the cut, drowning in a pain
Somebody help, 'cause I can't find my way
Nobody move, nobody move

When I'm sitting here knowing this ain't real
Why in the world would I give my heart to you?

Where were you when I needed you the most?

Produce and record on my own 80s 90s influence
He compared the black experience with gang life and the life you live later after it disables either physically, lawfully, or mentally. Using samurai as a correlation to us just being factions at war. Him being in blue and his opponent in red. Living after you’ve made so many mistakes and watching your dreams be cut short because of those choices is the television scene. And the ending scene of another red and blue warrior cutting down another life and possible dream is just the recurring cycle of violence that we have in our communities. Really genius anime level type shit
Jarvis Randle if you watch the music for ‘show me the way’ - thundercat, this is like part 1 of the guys life and stuff.

Underrated comment
I would feel it more if things like the FBI and CIA elements were exposed. War on drugs and these gangwars were and still are manufacturings of the vested elite and genocidal, propped up to sabotage the likes of the original Black Panthers and the Black power movement, as well as any potential resurgences. I hope Thundercat absorbs a bit more elements like The Coup into their work in the future.

Mac Miller’s favorite song. Dedicated to him. This song is about pain and depression. It is sad and deeply represents a lot of us. This video is so unsettling, deep, raw. The utterly depressed look on the warrior's face while he sits in the chair......haunting. The guinea pig in an utterly sterile, trapped, small environment- motionless. What is the death scene at the end? The warrior re-living something from his past? Unbelievably addictive, great song but damn.......the video really gets to me.

I interpret this as more of a metaphor for how commitment can disable you.
Sacrifices have to be made for a relationship like a marriage. And that can involve giving up on passions or dreams you once had.
But once it’s too late and the moment has passed you’re just an sad disabled animal put in a cage.
Not really a live for the reasons you wanted.

This will never be bad. Ever. Even when people have evolved past the need for bodies, past the need for human speech. Past the point of the English language's usage, past the point if anything we knoe here and now, this will still be the best song. It will always be in my mind and my heart, and as my life goes on I'm sure it will only hit harder and slap better. This, in my opinion, is the best song I have ever heard. Legitimately.

Here's my take: This is about a toxic relationship. The red samurai is his wife. You can tell if you look carefully. The opening scene of him dueling his wife and his wife cutting off both of his arms is very symbolic. One of the things he does in his dream when he has arms again is play the piano. I'm interpreting this as him regretting starting a family with his wife who I would infer is probably emotionally and verbally abusive towards him - he may have sacrificed his dreams and ambition to become a family man for the wrong partner. This abusive attitude exhibited by his wife seems to have been inherited by his daughter too, who shuts off the TV when he requests that she change the channel.
The last, most telling shot (to me) was the shot of the gerbil in its glass cage with its little wheel at the end. That's symbolic too. It's symbolic of the guy - who's expected to keep on living, keep on generating income, and basically get treated by his wife like that little gerbil in the cage. Completely helpless and trapped. Pretty fucking depressing if you ask me, awesome song though.
Spot on
Shit... Like we hear enough about women's problems and I know it's very real and I'm not discriminating...
But men can face real problems just like women but because it's not heard of in the news it's very easily overlooked or disregarded as something not so serious...

When you look up the word Understatement it's shows this comment!
It looks like the blue swordsman is Thundercat in the beginning and the red swordsman is his son. Notice in the picture he was only surrounded by his daughter and wife. The son must have been ostracized for some unbeknownst reason.
The mother and daughter resent the father for his actions and then the old purposeless samurai thinks back to when he fought his own father and how it may have felt. To be young, to be hurt, to be powerful.
The story really fits a Japanese story arc of melancholy.
