Beautiful rendering! I'm quite familiar with this sword, having read the article in the Ken Warner "Knives" publication from the '90s, I also own the Deepika cutlery reproduction of this sword, so it's even familiar to my hand. Your animation of the internal construction of the hilt is excellent, as well as your very polite suggestion that due to the poor condition of the find, we'll never truly know how the blade was formed. I can give my opinion from multiple sources, but must agree with your wording. The aforementioned Deepika piece does not show the difference in the garnet pommel cap, but it's clearly described by the British museum curator in all of her discussions on the topic. I guess this is a long winded "well done" compliment. I'd love to see similar rendering of Danish and German bronze age swords, or any bronze age long blades showing the detailed artistry of blade design. Keep em comin'

To add to the dating/debate as to who was buried in mound 1 and the likelihood it was Rædwald, the magnificent belt purse buried in the site, with its fabulously decorated lid, contained thirty seven gold coins, each from a separate Frankish mint and three gold blanks (one for each of the rowers who would have crewed this magnificent ship). Those coins have been dated-the latest falls within Rædwald’s lifetime and no later. This pretty much rules out his sons. Rædwald ruled for a long time-there are other elements of dating evidence which basically put the grave as coming from Rædwald’s reign.

This is so cool. I’d love to recreate this sword someday myself. I’m currently working on an Excalibur sword, and wish to work my way up to the Sutton-Hoo sword.

Listening to people's explainations of ancient master craftsmen as thick and lucky, even though some ancient creations cannot be recreated with modern tools? So who's the thicky?
I've also noticed that historians and archiologists will force the finds to their thesis rather than accept what is found, eg- that there were four gold pieces riveted to the horn handle, and not the two that were found with it! If it was four they would have found two more, simple....

Hi Andrew, I really like that point, because it's something that really grinds my gears sometimes. Whenever anything is found, it feels like we just accept the first explanation we hear. Even though we shouldn't forget, it's just a theory.

Patrick Barta, a Czech blade smith makes a fantastic reproduction of this sword. Having said I'm out of here, no interest in a digital build, I already know about the construction details, I was hoping to watch the process.
