Why I Like Amtrak

  • 50 years ago today in 1971, Amtrak was formed in an attempt to recover American passenger rail travel. From a fledgling railroad using a hodge-podge of mismatched equipment dating back to the 1940s and 50s, to a fully functional and modernized American passenger railroad, Amtrak has had quite the run. To celebrate, I thought I'd dedicate an entire video to talking about where my deep and long-standing appreciation for Amtrak came from, and why I still love Amtrak to this day. Thank you to everyone at Amtrak for making my childhood and CZcams career what it is today. Happy 50th Birthday Amtrak!

I'm so grateful that I'm able to share my appreciation for Amtrak, and to see that so many other people also have a similar interest and appreciation for the railroad. I really do enjoy making all types of videos about Amtrak considering how much the railroad has meant to be and been a part of my life. Thank you for all your continuous support and Happy 50th Birthday to Amtrak!

Suddenly realises Amtrakguy365 was born in 2002 and feels old!! 🤣🤣🤣
One of my earliest memories is also from when I was 3 years old. It was taking the train (an orange and black Strathclyde liveried Class 320 as I recall) into Glasgow to lay flowers for Princess Diana. So that was in 1997.
Mind you - all these years later (aged 26) I've been through school, uni and . . . Then joined the railways!
Now a conductor on passenger trains in Scotland - including the classes 158 & 170 that I remember riding as a kid.
I studied Physiology . . . Joined the railways as a Hospitality steward whilst I looked for something to do with my degree . . . And very quickly realised that whilst the shifts can suck occasionally, it's an amazing place to work and there's a real and rewarding career to be built in the railways.
Here I am nearly 5 years service (2 years Hospitality, nearly 3 as a conductor) and currently back at uni (distance learning whilst working) doing a Certificate in Railway Operations management provided by Glasgow Caledonian University in conjunction with the Institution of Railway Operators.

I used to always take the bus when I visit my relatives in Michigan. But this year I took Amtrak - my first train ride ever. Train travel offers a different type of scenery from bus travel. You see more forests and wetlands on the train; you also ride through mountains, valleys, canyons, gorges, and ravines. In addition, Amtrak employees are soooo nice and friendly. This has been a dream come true because I've wanted to ride the train since I was in middle school. I'm definitely going to ride Amtrak again.

As a kid and even still now, I was obsessed with GO Transit. It all started back when I was around 5 years old and living in the Streetsville part of Mississauga, in a house within walking distance of Streetsville GO. Me and my grandma would walk down to Streetsville GO nearly every evening to watch the trains pass by, with me being obsessed with their Green paint scheme, since green was my favourite colour at the time, plus I loved their size and design of the train cars. I would doodle GO Trains on my work sheets, and even had a GO Transit themed birthday party when I was 6 too! As I grew older, I got to take GO Transit a few times, always wanting to sit up high and look down, and then watched as I went past Willowbrook Yard and saw a whole fleet of them, before pulling into Toronto and looking at all of the big buildings. Later I would start going down to Clarkson GO on the Lakeshore West line and that's when I was introduced... to the Express train~ At that time, Express trains bypassed Clarkson, watching those big trains of Green and White absolutely blast pass was a sight to behold, that's also when I first saw VIA Rail trains too, also bypassing Clarkson at a super fast speed, I was hooked~ I grew up more and started taking the train on my own, especially for fun day trips into Toronto during the pandemic. Sadly I now no longer live in the GTA but instead live just outside of London in a small town on VIA Rail's Toronto-Windsor line, with trains passing my town at 125km/h

My most fondest memories of Amtrak was when I was around 6 or 7. This was way back in the early 90s and I was on both the X2000 and ICE when they where running them up and down the NEC. Both trips where from Philadelphia to NYC. Both times with my father. My dad was a big train nut himself so that was a big deal taking the X2000 and ICE. From what I remember. The X2000 was cool and smooth and it had the tilt system and I remembered the train car tilting. And from what I can remember, the ICE train was rought on the rails a very bumpy and rocky ride. I also grew up in northeast Philadelphia and our house was literally next to the Northeast corridor and I would watch both SEPTA and Amtrak trains constantly fly by. I would always know when a train was coming by listing to the catenary wires. They give off this faint electrical static sound and as the train got closer, it would get louder.

It's kind of amazing to think that back when it was formed in 1971, everybody thought that passenger rail travel in the US was on its way out, that Amtrak was formed essentially as a means of managed decline to eventually fade away. Just think about that: Amtrak was essentially born... to die.
And yet, 50 years on, not only is Amtrak still alive and well, but arguably more vibrant now than it's ever been before, with a brighter future ahead of it than could ever have been imagined. Long may it flourish!
And, as has become something of a mantra in my family, and may become one for you too, "Everything is right in the world as long as the Amtrak's still running."

as someone who has never been to US i've been facinated by the long distance amtrack lines that can take 2 or 3 days. the longest trip i've ever taken, time or geographically is a 4 and a half hour TGV trip to the spanish border from paris. I never knew night trains still existed until a few years ago, and watching videos from onboard superliners going through breathtaking scenery at slow speeds seems so romantic to me. my exprience with diesel engines is also limited with just a handful of trips on DMUs under my belt, and to me the genesis is beautiful. I would love to take one of the long distance trains on day, hopfully before the chargers replace the genesis.

For me, it wasn’t a memory of riding Amtrak, but instead of watching Empire Service trains sprinting along the Hudson along side Metro North Commuters. While I may have seen the last runs of FL9s and phase III and IV P32ACDMs, my mind always recalls bright, shiny new Phase V P32ACDMs pulling Amfleet tubes along the river. Between the Amtrak and Metro North on my side of the river and the CSX freights on the west side, these early memories were what kept me hooked on trains, always joking that my love of trains came from hearing Amtrak trains pulling into the station outside the window of the hospital I was born in, and while that MAY not be totally accurate (lol) it gets the point across. Thanks for sharing and for continuing to make awesome content. Hope your finals are going well in school, finishing up classes myself today, and I wish you the best man! I have a pretty similar story. My love for trains in general also began with Thomas, those same DVDs that you mentioned, and with riding Amtrak's Wolverine between Detroit and Chicago. I'm really excited for what Amtrak has in store for the future, especially locally. Since the Michigan Services are state-supported, and the Michigan government seems to be continually working to make improvements on those services (such as 110mph running), I think that our state will be one of the first to get further improvements on passenger rail service (as intended by Amtrak's 2035 plan). I've always held an admiration for Amtrak trains, and I think it will just get better in the future. Happy 50th anniversary, Amtrak! Whenever I criticize Amtrak it's not because I dislike the railroad, it's because I hate how it was set to fail from the beginning due to horrible funding strategy and expecting freight companies to care about a passenger service that isn't there's. Amtrak deserves better and is all that's left of the iconic American passenger trains of the past. So let's hope that Uncle Sam will change his attitude towards Amtrak and rail travel and allow them a better funding strategy. Thanks for educating us on Amtrak and you have made me fan of their's 👏

Ever since I was little Thomas The Tanks Engine was a huge part of my childhood. I had a vast collection of the Fisher-Price Thomas and Friends Take N Play magnetic train toys and sets. Of course when you get older you stop playing with kiddie toys but I feel there’s always a part of our childhood favorites that stick with us through our adult years and trains has definitely stuck with me. Nowadays I try and film trains and always learn more information about railroading and the history surrounding trains. Personally for me I’ve been a big freight rail fan and my favorite company is CSX but my favorite paint scheme is definitely Norfolk Southern’s as the horse does add a nice touch to the brand. The innovation I’ve seen over at Union Pacific being able to remotely control a large engine at your fingertips is amazing. They just walk outside and move the locomotive with a controller in front of them as if they were actually in the cab themselves. AmtrakGuy365 has informed me a lot of things about the railroad through his videos and continues to provide some top notch content. Thank You, and keep up the great work! 🙂

I love your videos as they offer a great insight into American railfanning, and has taught me a lot about Amtrak.

Our stories is quite similar. I have a passion for buses/trains and you have a passion mainly for Amtrak trains. I also play video games too and I still busfan and railfan within the city of Chicago. Thank you for mentioning my hometown of Chicago. I'm 20 years old in 2021 lol. I'm also going to get more Amtrak train videos in the future just for you. And yes, you should work for Amtrak, you'll be great working on your favorite Amtrak train number/line. Also, I've never been on any Amtrak train.

I know that feeling, although where I live doesn't have Amtrak service (being 50 miles from Kansas City) I've grown up with classic BNSF, seeing the rainbow of motive power from predeceasing roads intertwined with modern GEs always gave me vibes and although today's BNSF is mostly made up of GE models roaming the mainline through St Joseph I can always appreciate that I grew up with trains and if it wasn't for those old BNSF SD40-2s I would've probably been fascinated with other things. Thanks for showing this video to us and keep up the good work my dude.

Being born in Ireland the way you feel about Amtrak is how I used to feel about Iranrod Eireann's (Irish Rail) Intercity services. But since they replaced the entire fleet it's not the same. They replaced all their BREL built MK3 and MK2 coaches and GM and EMD locos with 3 and 4 car Korean made DMUs that are reliable, comfortable and cheap to operate but are so souless. Their engines sound like bus engines for one thing. I moved to the United States a couple years ago and I have really missed full length intercity trains with cafe cars and Locos hauling them. Didn't know how much I missed them until I took my first Amtrak journey between San Diego and Los Angeles, It was 1 amfleet and a bunch of horizons and NPCU and a brand new charger locomotive.

Awesome video to show that personal connection to such an awesome railroad. I have a very similar story in liking Amtrak but it's because my father is an engineer of the Wolverine and Blue Water and it just intrigued me at such a young age seeing him up in the engine of that beautiful P42 (and now SC44) and watching it fly past. Amtrak is and always will be a special railroad to those who hold that special connection to it!

AmtrakGuy365: I love this video and your talk about how your love grew for the company overtime but I have one piece of advice for you: don't psych yourself out of a job, apply to Amtrak once you get your degree. Why you might ask: I grew up flying to visit family in Asia and every time we'd connect through Japan. My exposure to the Japanese language and my love of aviation (in addition to trains...which is why I'm watching your videos lol) started there. I came to love 747s, long plane flights (before the advent of seat back screens, and smartphones), and just how Japanese sounded so beautiful as a language...as a kid. So during high school and college, I learned Japanese for fun, and as it just so happened...I graduated just in time (after studying air traffic control) to apply to be a Flight Attendant...ha! I thought it would be a temporary gig, but I've come to love my life and my career so much...I don't ever want to quit. It's now so easy for me to see family, visit Japan (outside of a pandemic), ride bullet trains (yay rail pass!), and most importantly: bring an incalculable amount of happiness to my life and the most wonderful experiences in my twenties. In my thirties, I'm now working as a full time real estate agent and part time flight attendant, getting ready to get married, etc...but TLDR: get your degree, and apply for Amtrak. Go work on the trains in what ever capacity, and go have some layover in some part of the the USA that you've never been to before. You can still stay sharp with your graphic design skills during your down time (hopefully on the train so you can get paid while you practice lol) or days off, but DO NOT psych yourself out of trying something completely out of your realm of comfort. You're too young to do that, even if it's just 1 month, 6 months, 10 days of trying the railroad life: DO IT. Because if you find out you hate it, at least you're going to learn a whole lot more about yourself and you're going to live a life without regrets. A lot of people don't get a chance to do that, this is your opportunity, TAKE IT!

Also I'm so glad I had the opportunity to ride the Old Accela first class before covid.
What Im upset about on the other hand is not having the opportunity yet to ride my favorite Amtrak, The Superliners pulled by F40PH's.
That is sadly something I missed as a kid. I could have. My parents didn't have the means to take me to do that as a kid, even though we did go to Strasburg in the late 1990's. I was about 4 or 5 then

Awesome to know a bit more about you and why you enjoy Amtrak so much. I'm a few years older than you but have similar sentiments...my dad used to be a travel agent specializing in rail travel, and my parents and I took many trips by train. I still haven't flown to this day, both because I love train travel and because of problems with my ears that would prevent flying comfortably until I get surgery performed. One day I'll have kids and try to pass on my love of trains to them. I only hope Amtrak is still around.
