I have now been filming Grasstrack meetings for over 30 years, and have filmed most British Championships, and let me just say, this has to be in the top 3 Championship meetings i have filmed. After the Ledbury MCC had to cancel their first attempt at running the meeting a few weeks earlier because of the rain made the track unsafe to race on, they took the brave decision to try again on their regular and very popular circuit, and they were rewarded with the riders putting on some of the best racing seen at any British Championships.
The 250cc class saw some absolutely titanic battles between the youngest riders in the meeting. Jake Mulford and Cameron Taylor were simply sensational. Luke Harris and 2018 & 2019 Champion Henry Atkins, both unable to make a decent start all day, and always having to come from the back, was just a spectators dream. The older generation of riders like former Champions Graham Thomas and Adam Shipp must've wondered what was going on.
The 350cc class saw the return of defending Champion Rob Finlow trying to keep hold of his crown. Up against him were several former winners of the class, including Tom Perry, Wayne Broadhurst, Paul Cooper and Neil Taylor. All 5 of these looked like they were flying in practice, and they, along with Andrew Whitaker, Tom Davis, Dave Mears, and the sensation of the meeting, John Cox put on some fabulous racing. But who would take the sudden death Final at the end of the meeting?
This was a meeting that had everything, from superb racing, plenty of drama, a few spills, and absolutely fantastic Finals, none more so than the Left Hand Sidecars. Reigning Champions Rob Heath/Kyle Fish had looked good through the heats, has had plenty of other crews. Will Penfold/Ricky Pay are always a threat to every other crew in this class, and looked like they had come for a race. Welsh crews of Alex Balman/Mark Hopkins, and fairly new to the class Michael & Tim Phillips have both been getting better all season, and would make their mark in this years Championships. Another new and very young crew in this class were Darren & Harry Hill, having only a few meetings behind them, certainly didn't look out of it through the heats, but the Final was just something else.
In the 500cc Sidecars this was billed as the rematch between Josh Goodwin/Liam Brown, and Mitch Godden/Paul Smith, after the very controversial ending to the 2019 Championship Final. But anyone who thought this was just going to be about these 2 crews, were very much mistaken. James Hartley/Sam Heath are really starting to get to grips with this class now, and Dan Berwick/Mark Hopkins had a great win earlier in the season at the Battle of Britain at Frittenden, so confidence in that camp was high. The all girl crew of Natasha Bartlett/Ciara Southgate always look like they will pull off a big win soon, and the young Welsh crew of Shaun Hughes/Louis Bennett may lack the experience of some of the other crews, but they always carry plenty of speed with them, and if they can point it in the right direction, then they will surely have a chance of a podium place. Also there is Aaron Vale/Danny Hogg, out on a Shaun Harvey bike, so that must give them an extra push. Danny Hogg's son, James Hogg along with passenger Scott Goodwin will be really determined to beat his father, so there's plenty of dangers to the expected top 2 crews of Josh Goodwin, and Mitch Godden.
This Championship will certainly be remembered by all who were there, and the Ledbury MCC can hold their heads high with pride at putting on such a brilliant 2021 British Championships.

it would appear grass track racing doesn't burn a lot of calories.

When did the sidecars start going anti-clockwise?

In the UK they have been going clockwise for a very long time. Way back in the 1950's, and maybe even before then. In the South East of the UK it has always been the Left Hand Sidecars, but the Right Hand Sidecars started getting strong in the 1970's. Now it is very competitive all over the UK.

@@BOB231158 i'd misunderstood that meeting was only the finals for some of the classes so I thought they'd dropped clockwise racing altogether. I'm now watching your Masters 2021 video with the other classes. When I started watching grass track in Cheshire in the 70s the sidecars only went clockwise.
