It seems they are doing everything they can to make all their vehicles qualify for the tax credit so I'm sure they are busy trying to figure out a scenario for the RWD, because right at this moment the LR is the obvious choice if you qualify for the tax credit. For a little more money you get the upgraded stereo, higher performance and AWD. Now, if they do what they did with the Y and give the RWD a Panasonic battery, make it slightly longer range and with tax credit it would be low $30,000's after tax credit, then it would be a value option.

On major advantage of the i3 is it’s light weight. Under 3000 lbs due to carbon fiber construction and small battery. There are only 2 states of existence as an i3 owner, enjoying everything about it or regretting that decision to sell it. BTW I have the 2019 model with range extender. Total range on paper is 237 miles.

I bought a Tesla Model Y last year (2023) and I did get the $7,500 off my taxes. It was perfect timing because that might be the only year I actually owed more than $7,500 in taxes. It was nice because when I bought my Model 3 in 2022 there was no incentive because under the old program Tesla has already sold too many cars and run out of credits. Not only did I get the tax credit on my Model Y it was $20,000 cheaper than if I had bought it in 2022 when I got the Model 3.

I agree with Francie that the RWD Model 3 has plenty of range, 272 mi, for daily driving (assuming home or work charging), and occasional road trips. I also agree that the LR model would be nice for people that road trip a lot, with more range and faster charging.
I wish Tesla would offer a long range RWD model again (I have a 2018 LR RWD 3), like they now do for the Model Y. Extra bonus points if Tesla would use the higher power rear motor from the Performance model. For super bonus points, if Tesla could somehow figure out how to get over 400 miles range with it, then I would have to upgrade. 😀

I just bought my 2024 Tesla M3 LR June 1st of this year. Can I submit form 8396 to try and receive the federal tax credit? It wasn't offered at the point of purchase when I bought, but not sure if I am able to receive this tax credit?

  • @christinaforsythe1938

I've had two Model 3 LR AWD (had to get the second one after the first one was totaled by a reckless driver) - the second is the 2024 refresh. I think it's important that people who are buying an EV understand what real world range they'll get - how it's impacted by weather, speed, wind, etc. - because I'm wary of the fear mongering news stories about EVs (recently, the story about people "trapped in their Tesla" when really it was a case of people not knowing the safety features of their car). I'd hate to see stories about people who can't take a road trip wherever they want to because there isn't enough charging and range to get there, which discourages the move from gas cars to EVs. One place I couldn't go, even with my old car's 300 miles of range, was Glacier NP. With the new car, I can now go there and back on one charge. It will be even easier if they ever open the Kalispell supercharger. Even if people only have the rare road-trip, they should probably buy the car with the largest range. Tesla's supercharger network is amazing and allows people to go just about anywhere they want to go, even if they need to be a little flexible with the route they take or where they charge (eg hotels, RV parks, available 6-11kw chargers). But other manufacturers rely on charging networks that aren't as plentiful or reliable. People buying EVs other than Tesla should probably get the most range they can afford if they ever want to go places outside a 100 mile radius from their home.

      @davekozlowski1266 Před 15 dny +1

Yeah, the 2 yr. Old Teslas with 90,000 miles on them can be bought for low $20k. So $38k down to low 20s however a $38,000 2022 Toyota Camry is only worth $18,000-$22,000 with 90,000 miles on it too. Pretty much the same loss in value.
Oh yeah, I forgot that many EVs got up to $12,500 in tax credits so the real cost to buy the EV was much less than a Toyota.

Thanks Francie. Great pricing especially with the full tax credit. My opinion is that the Model Y Juniper is just not ready for launch yet and the model 3 Highland (refresh) was ready. I personally would prefer the standard model 3 because I like the LFP battery (charge to 100%) but it only gets half the tax credit.

fueleconomy.gov/feg/tax2023.shtml for your reference; unless I missed it, the 2024 Model 3 RWD isn't listed as qualified for any federal tax credit. Oh btw the 2024 Model 3 Long Range AWD's EPA est. range is 341 miles, and at 80% state of charge it should get a driving range of 272 miles, that's practically the same as the 2024 Model 3 RWD at 100% state of charge.

The RWD isn’t a value anymore without the credit. But for me, the Y is still what I would go for because it’s the only EV that I have seen that has a 3500 pound tow rating for the lowest price. I would prefer a different brand, because I’m not a huge fan of Elon, but they still make the most well rounded EV’s. If only Hyundai/Kia could get some of their overseas models here faster, they would have the most well rounded portfolio. We need the EV2, EV3, and EV5, asap! Although I know a big hurdle for them is getting them manufactured in the states to get the tax credit.

I think they refreshed the M3 for a few reasons.
    1. It was the slightly older platform
    2. The Y seems to me to have had more “under the hood” improvements over the 3 despite being slightly newer
    3. Most importantly IMO is that they wanted to take any lessons learned from refreshing the 3 that, they sell less of, before doing it to the Y to try to minimize problems for their most sold vehicle

True. Crazy how people think that Tesla offers a good value for money. @@shou635 better educate yourself on this topic. Tesla netted a 6 billion dollars tax gain in 2023 alone, put that into relation to the total of 15 billion net income....
They have received tax credits/refunds etc for years due to their losses in the earlier years. Established companies do not benefit the same here. The $7500 tax credit for customers who buy a mostly american made EV benefits Tesla by far the most because they controlled 75% of the US EV market in the past years (which is massively diclining now!). Other companies were excluded or had to set up an additional production line in the US which is expensive and takes time.
On top of that there are local tax benefits for EVs which differ from state to state. The import tax and trade restrictions like limiting the sales of semiconductors on chinese EVs and demanding a 100% import tax is a big win for Tesla as well. On the other hand Tesla profited hugely from chinese EV tech like battery cells and battery packs.
Tesla gets massive subsidies to build up their factories in the states and counties, they get subsidies for industrial electricity etc.
You also have the CO2-emissions trade where Tesla can sell "CO2-certificates" to other companies which exceed their CO2-emissions level and would otherwise have to pay a fine to the government/regulatory agency. This CO2-certificate trade is very lucrative for Tesla. Take all of that away and what is left from Tesla?!
Without the federal and local tax credit programs alone way less people would buy a Tesla EV.
Now imagine you get 10k tax credit for buying a combustion car instead, how many cars would Tesla sell then?! Probably close to zero.
Tesla only achieved to make a profit for 2 years now thanks to all the benefits it enjoys.
Tesla is a gigantic state sponsored company with mediocre technology
