That's Why There Is a Leap Day

- Have you ever wondered where leap years come from? Where do they get those extra hours that add up to a whole day? And what if you’re born on a leap day?
A year is the period of time it takes the Earth to make a full circle around the Sun. The most accurate calculations say that our planet finishes its rotation after 365 days, 5 hours, and 48 minutes. Each year, 5 hours and 48 minutes are uncounted, and when 4 years pass, these hours and minutes add up to an extra day. But the calculations weren't always so exact.

SUMMARY:
- During the reign of Julius Caesar, the Roman calendar consisted of only 355 days. Every 2 years they would add an extra month of 22 days to it.
- The year with an extra day was called “Bis Sextus” which means “the second sixth” in Latin.
- In ancient Rome, they celebrated the New year on March 1, which is why they added the leap day to the end of February.
- Astronomers noticed that the spring equinox happened much earlier than March 21 - the date put in the calendar.
- Clearly it was necessary to correct the Julian calendar, and in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII did so by having astronomers cut down the number of leap years.
- If you happened to be born on a leap day, you overcame the odds of 1 in 1461.
- In the 18th century, a famous German moralist wrote an essay called “Consolations for the Unfortunates Born on the 29th of February”. He suggested a detailed scheme of how they should celebrate their birthday each year.
- In the 19th century, an interesting marriage tradition became popular. Usually, men had to kneel down on one knee to propose to a woman. But in a leap year, women could propose to men.
- Leap years were also chosen to hold one of the main global sports events - the Olympic games.
- If you get a fixed salary each year, you'll get stiffed in a leap year. You just have to work one day for free!

Celebrate a birthday every 4 years sounds interesting😂
its terrible
its bad enough waiting 1 year but 4? thats ridiculous
My friend birthday is feb 29, 2008 so she is turning 3 and is in the 6th grade
JD Golden My cousin is Feb 14 2008 his birthday comes in the Valentines day and lucky enough not to be in a leap day 15 days only before it
@@Sky-zo1kp It's pretty cool tbh. It's special. And we do celebrate it every year. I don't think there's anyone insane enough to only celebrate it every 4 years
@@sumn2761 wow that my birthday too
How to make your child born at the leap day (February 29th)?
Just "make your baby" on the end of April, any days on May, or the start of June (these months are 9 months until February, which is the total time for pregnancy until the baby is born), at a year before a leap year (ex. 2015, 2019 which is now but no chances again, 2023, 2027, etc.).
There you have your baby born at February 29th, with chance more than 40%.
*sorry for worst English*
Nah now's ok. Enjoy your "leaper baby".
I never thought that someone studied the Earth so that he can make a calendar I always thought someone woke up in the morning and wrote a calendar
February is the most unique month of the year because of the the 28/29 days. It's also a beautiful month. Stay awesome my brothers and sisters of February💚

I like the idea of taking the 31st from two months and giving it to February, then putting the leap day at the end of October. That way, every four years, you would have Oct 32 - Halloween 2!

A friend I grew up with shares a birthday with leap day. He celebrates it on March 1st for non leap years since they are both the 60th day into the year. Makes sense!
The weirdest thing is that we have Valentine's Day

3:26 that’s is false. He said “in non Leap year if January 1 is on a Monday, then if the next year is a leap year, it will fall on a Wednesday. That is false. The leap day hasn’t occurred in the year yet, therefore in the leap year, January 1 would fall on a Tuesday. Thank you for your incorrection because it only makes me smarter😁

The size of the earth is larger than 360 degrees around. Unfortunately, 365 does not divide very well on a map. 5% was shaved off. In the creation of the calendar, those days were added back. Via an additional day in Jan, Mar, Jul, Aug & December. Additional time had to be added to the calendar, because 6 hours a year was lost with the man-made calendar. That time totaled 24 hours every 4 years. They add that day to February every leap year.
My Grandpa was born on leap day (Feb 29th) At some point my siblings and I could say we were “older” than him. 😄. Of course we celebrated his Birthday every year.
Thank you for solving my confusion 😊

I was born February 29, 1956....
I celebrate my birthday the 28th and March 1.... The nurses tried to get my mom to forge my birthday to March 1..... I'm glad she refused.... she knew this was special..... so it's normal to me to not have a birthday each year....
Your 64?
I would have loved to hear about how the calendar originally had only 10 months and Jan and Feb were introduced to even out the years
Because, there just is. Let it be 🤷🏾♂️

Great and interesting Bright Side Videos, Good day to everyone here, More power to all.
3:16 That is wrong! You should have used March 1 instead. That effect of leap year happens a year later for Jan.1 - Feb. 28.
That's exactly what I was going to say.
Not only that, but at 3:09 January advances into February of the following year, making the animation incorrect. This is why I am so confused. Also as I type this, it is Saturday, February 29, 2020. This is the fifth Saturday in February. The month of February has not had 5 Saturdays since 1992.
I. Am so interested in you videos and i learn so much i love you vids
I know someone born on 29th February. My friends and I used to joke around that he was too young to stay up at night and play video games with us Even though we were the same age.
Let me answer this question. Each year lasts approximately 365.25 days but we don’t count the extra 0.25 days. After 4 years it adds up and ends up becoming one whole day (0.25x4=1) We then add an extra day to February every four years
I was born towards the end of February however it was not a leap year. So I couldn't have yelled to my mother, "Hold on, hold on! We're almost there!"
You know that next year Halloween🖤🖤🖤 its going to be on a Saturday I'm so excited 😀

I’m a Leap Day baby. Thx for the vid! Didn’t know about the time of birth as to what day you celebrate your birthday on, I was born at 2:03p so now it’s more complicated...😒
Leap Day 2020 is on a Saturday. Same happened in 1992 and will happen again in 2048, a year that's a power of 2.
Or in scientific matters, the solar cycle, where the calendar repeats itself every 28 years.
If your born on leap year do u stay the Same age for 4 years and when its leap year again do you go up 4 years or get older every year
I'm also confused 😂
If there's no leap day, people usually celebrate it on the 28th. It's by year not 4 years. From all I know I'm not actually 4 1/4 years old
😂
Next video idea: What would happen if everyone and any capable entity farted at the same time?
So so interesting 2 know , just a longer day n more days in the month ...
Every 4 years there is a day that isn't real
There is a grand total of 97 leap years in every 400-year period (which means 303 common years in that same period and that the additional 3 common years are the only common years divisible by 4).
bright guy ur the man u have really inspired me so I started my own CZcams channel I would love it if I would get support from u guys

I was born on February 29th. Didn't know about the time frames of when to celebrate on non leap years.
Fun Fact: We didn’t need to add a leap year, because we could’ve just been used to the weather for each month.
Edit: (Eight months later…)
And also, they could just add the 6 hours to Dec. 31, because people are already staying up late.
That would mean we'd either be doing stuff at night in some years or the date would change in the middle of our day.
My point earlier Rachel: According to B.S earth rotation = 365 days //5 hours 48 minutes multiplied by 4 equals 21.92 hours even rounding up comes to 22.32 hours not 24 or the leap year day.
So cool
My dad was almost born on February 29 1968 but was on February 28 1968
Its the only information from bright side that i already knew😁
I wish the 13 month calendar was oficial. So much simpler!

Interesting 🤔
Like feb 29th any leap year or friday 13th, halloween, black friday in November each year? And Olympics all have to wait for 4 years or years for them like 3 friday 13th in one year is waiting a decade? Or friday 31st or any month or 1st day of monday or month? Or 21 dec 2021 will be different date? Like 21.12 2021? Hasn't happened yet, but like recognises like? What comes around goes around? Or 7th july 2007 007? Like james bond? Just saying? Its worth waiting for other days dont compare to match?
My sister has a friend that was born on a leap day

Can I have your number??
@Firefurygaming I'm pretty sure she's over the legal age of consent or adulthood and if she wasn't she'd most likely tell me since she can speak for herself.
@Firefurygaming Well...you could also give somebody your snapchat Instagram FaceBook and etc as an alternative to giving out your ( mobile ) phone number.
@Firefurygaming Yeah but I like Instagram and Snapchat better because they don't require you to use your real name unlike FaceBook.
I'm not in school so I don't have any homework anymore.
Even more weird....if you calculate, let’s say, how many seconds in a day for example. So, 86,400 seconds in a day...8+6+4+0+0= 18.....1+8= 9. No matter if it’s minutes in a week, seconds in a month, 31 day month, 30 days, 28 or 29....when you break down and add your answer up, it will ALWAYS come back to 9. Another astonishing but totally unimportant fact. 😂
