- The Complete "You Can't Do That On Television" panel from the launch event for "Slimed! An Oral History of Nickelodeon's Golden Age" at New York's 92nd Street Y. Participants (other than me) included Christine McGlade, Aladair Gillis and Geoffrey Darby.

I would love to see the full cast reunion someday this was my favorite show as a kid. It's also cool to see mark Summers after all these years.
Christine is still looking pretty damn good.
Diskoboy1974 , you mean Moose
Moose will always be beautiful...hearing her now only adds to the Moose ethos. What a woman
She's HOT
"Motormouth" aka Lisa Ruddy!!! It's been darn near 35 years since I watched YCDTOT.
grew up in Ottawa at the time this was in full effect back in 1983-1986.. remember waking up sat mornings and turning on CJOH at 9am or 9: 30ish. and watchin it!! believe i still have some episodes on tape
Makes me feel a little old seeing this but to this day that show still cracks me up. The writing was good and the kids were genuinely funny. Les Lye was hilarious as well. His characters on the show were great!
I thought it was several adults, was shocked to find Les Lye was doing all of them? Was my favorite show at the time, thought theyd be huge celebrities cause they deserved to be.
Dieeeeee heard that!
RIP to Les Lye
Never understood why Christine was treated like she was ugly on the show. I thought she was the cute one ;p
All part of the show. She even helped write it sometimes.
+the7thlevl i was four and thought she was beautiful, in fact I still do and I can't explain why...
She had this cute girl two houses down appeal. She was like the teenager three grades above you that your parents would hire to babysit you when you were in middle school lol
+the7thlevl If I had to do it over again, I would have cut back on the insult humor about how the girls looked, especially the fat jokes. Back in the 80s, we weren't as aware of how much girls were affected by body image issues. But in comedy, the main characters always have to suffer or fail or be frustrated in some way. It helps the audience bond with them.
When I think back on the show, one of the bits I remember most, for some reason, is Doug complaining about how candy bars gets smaller every year, and peeling layers of foil back until he gets to a piece of candy the size of 2 squares from a Hershey Bar. ;p
From that point on, every time I notice a product going up in price but down in quantity (like opening a bag of chips and the bag is half empty) I think of that skit.
Awesome! Marc Sommers! And Christine McGlade! And Alasdair too. What a nostalgia overload.
In 82' I was 20 n I absolutely loved this show! Les Lye always had me laughin, he was awesome! I wish I could get the complete series on dvd. I got rid of cable a couple of years ago n have been buying complete series dvd's of old sitcoms n westerns. I would buy this in a heartbeat!! These CZcams videos bring back so many memories. Thanks for sharing!!!❤️😎👍👍👍
What a way to knock the dust off some brain cells! If it weren't for Alastair's distinctive eyes, I'd have never recognized him. Christine definitely looks almost the same, save for the hair color.....still adorable. Thanks Bob for posting this!!
I so remember Alaistair and Christine and the blonde kid, Doug,
yea man I agree , but I thought I would search this because I have not thought of these people in decades ,, , but this is sort of depressing. Idk why
we got old.
Alastair my biggest 80s crush next to Flash Gordon and Optimus prime
I used to be jealous of his haircut when I was a kid, I still have my hair though.
They found the right kids. Alastairs conversational skills were way ahead of his age. With great writing its awesome to watch even now. Then everyone started getting better on the mov and it grew. It wasnt corny. It isnt even corny now. Thats a sign of great writing.
Thank you for the crushing wave of nostalgia I just experienced.
Thanks for posting, Robert. 👍🏽
That was a great overview! I remember a DVD documentary where Roger said the show was a reaction to the conservative, squeaky clean "typical" children's shows of the time with singing, dancing, poetry and art.
This show was a lot more chatty and free flowing, and a cool sense oif anarchy and mischief, which gave it a lot of life.
they should've slimed them all at the end of the panel...just for nostalgia sake
But then we wouldn't have been able to attend the reception afterwards...
true...true
had such a crush on Moose
This is awesome !!!
Alasdair ... omigod I had the biggest crush on him.
ME TOO! He still looks amazing.
@@karabadasski2521 I agree and he remember him saying idk in two languages which was so funny.
I think even boys did too. Too bad about his hair tho..
Omg me too!
Still do!
Ah, Moose. Crushed on you when I was younger, and still crushing today. :)
Me 2
Same
How can you not? She's still smoking!
I remember when Christine said the script was in German and she asked Alasdair if he can understand any of it. Alasdair told Christine that he did say a couple of languages in school. Alasdair had to read to Christine IDK in German and what it means in English which got him slimed. Christine told him that he is dumb in two languages.
Ich Weiss es nicht. (Oh bugger, I got slimed!)
I loved watching You Can't Do That on Television when I was a kid! My favorite was Alastair.
Wow! I never knew Roger Price was responsible for both The Tomorrow People 'and' this. I loved both shows when I was twelve. Yes, bald Alasdair does come as a rude awakening since he's my age. I do somewhat regret googling 'You Can't Do That On Television' and 'reunion.' Moose has gone grey, but she looks terrific.
Binge-watching some of these fairly recent get-togethers of the cast members of YCDTOT. Reason? A few days ago, my brother-in-law shared a video on social from some random site that mentioned this week marked the 39th anniversary of the pilot, "Whatever Turns You On." I watched this show religiously growing up as an '80s kid. I have a cast picture in a frame to this day of the final cast in 1987 after I entered the green slime contest. Mr. Black, if your'e still reading these, thanks! Ahead of its time and unique for tackling adult topics in a way that was watchable by all ages, I think. And I guess I'm the umpteenth person to say Christine looks amazing for her age now :)
Alasdair looks great!
He's really kept himself together.
Except for the loss of hair ..
@@xtraflo who gives a shit about that?
Alsidair are you single?
He is still a dream boat
@@xtraflo I miss the hair.
Is it really a YCDTOTV event if Kevin Illyanovich Rasputin Kubusheskie isn’t in attendance? I don’t think so. (He was my first celebrity crush...when I was 8.)
Yeah I'd love to see him today
Thank you! Never forget!
I was crushing on Alastair when I was a kid.
I had such a crush on Alasdair! Omg he looks good! Aged well. This really brings back memories
You and me both!
Respect to the creator, producers, stars and staff. YCDTOTV should've been retitled to what it really was. "The LES LYE Show". His characters were hilarious!!
HI, such a great show. I thought this would become a major tv (or network tv) hit. Amazing to see the early days of Whatever Turns You On and how it became YCDTOTV, a call in show? And they'd interview actual kids. I used to video tape it every day and watch when home; It was great but something bad happened in 1986 right? Ownership changed? Nickelodeon went into the gutter, once Alasdair was being pushed out the kids acting on the show went bad, it was not watchable. The Nick channel had promo "feeds" all night hour after hour. They even advertised for someone to make the schedule or? I used to watch some b/w tv shows like bewitched, and then Nick at nite cancelled it saying, on commercials that aired only a week or so, because Darrin contracted AIDS and passed away, that quote "AIDS is a gay plague and we dont want to give him any attention so the show is cancelled". Then they had ren/stimpy? a sick evil cartoon from hell itself; they had shows like All That? Talentless kids throwing pies or spitting at each other or being stupid with audience laughing on queue hoping for money or prizes? Then I remember Alasdair saying the green slime made him sick which is more likely than not... And they stopped airing and refused to pay the original stars, so sad
Roger Price was also the creator of The Tomorrow People as well the original from the UK!
Back then my little brother and I cut up pieces of newspaper and “slime” each other with it while watching.
Alasdair and Moose were my favorites !!
they were before Saved by the Bell in terms of iconic kid shows
I remember seeig Lisa and Les make a guest appearance on Livewire. Anyone gave that episode?
Alasdair Gillis 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I wish they'd bring new shows back from 80s
It wouldn’t work today, people are wimps and wouldn’t be able to take it. 😜
I love how Alasdair dumps on the nostalgia except when he can cash a Con check
when/where did he dump on it? link?
That show is so funny and some of it is really silly because there is stuff in it that doesn't happen in real life.
Omg Double Dare!
Wished they had more cast members......longer talk time.......
Lisa Ruddy n Alanis Morissette
She’s still very sarcastic lol
Where's Kevin and Doug?
As a kid I loved the show! And my friends and I had a in ongoing game that we weren’t allowed to say I don’t know. If we did anything could be thrown to the person - especially nasty if we were playing with Hot Wheels! Those buggers really hurt.
When I went to secondary school my best friend Hans, looked like Alasdair with his play hair mullet. And the girls would swoop over him because of it - I was just the “ugly” appendix when I was with him. They didn’t know that Hans was gay as folk. Now I wonder if Hans also is bald… If not, then we definite know Alasdair got bald because of the slime :)
Allister was my first boy crush growing up
Who got an agent? Schenk?
Does anyone know when was? Twenty years ago? Ten?
October 2013. That's me in the green striped shirt, so I remember well.
Are they suing selling Nickelodeon for $1 billion? I hope they all get it, its horrible the toxic chemicals that seeped in their skin and caused cancer.
Are you for real
There is just always been something bout Mark that I can't stand. I can't put my finger on why,but anyways I loved YCDTOTV, loved it !
He comes off as sorta being a bit like a used car salesman for.some reason. I dunno.
@@Nihilianth (green slime poured on you) LOL
@@Nihilianth part o the joke of the tv show.
Ok awkward moment but why did audience laugh when Alasdair said Reagan bombed Libia? Smh not funny😬
Moose is still so hot
I guess they couldn't get Alanis Morissette🤔
The event was part of a book launch for a "Golden Age of Nickelodeon" oral history. Alanis wasn't interviewed for the book, so she wasn't there.
And really, I didn't like getting the Alanis question thrown at me during the panel. If I'd been less surprised and more quick-witted, I would have answered, "You were part of the Alanis era, right?" with "Actually, I was part of the Christine, Lisa and Alasdair era."
She was only in like 5 episodes. From what I have read and seen on line. She actually got mistaken for being a boy since her hair was cut short.
Moose!!!
That's a reunion? Wow-glad I didn't pay to go to it. YCDTOTV was always about the actors-to me anyways, not who wrote it or who lives in France or why...I came here to see the characters from the show I loved as a kid. Lame....
The event was for the book "Slimed!" which was about ALL the shows on Nickelodeon in the 80s and 90s. We were only a small part of it. That's how it was billed, and that's what the people who showed up expected to see, so it worked out.
What's so funny about bombing Libya?
This show made me wonder why all Canadians had Down Syndrome eyes...
Christine McGlade always had the most horrible hair, and _still_ does. LOL!
Esteban Rincon I think she looks great! Although, I have to admit I was shocked to see Alasdair bald.
+dgwaters Well at least he met Kermit the Frog. Not everyone can do that.
+Gaston Goolsby on television. Sorry, I'll see myself out.
Typical Americans taking credit for something they had absolutely nothing to do with
+Blaine LeBlanc To whom are you referring? When I was on that stage, I only took credit for the scripts I wrote, not the show as a whole.
actually america put this show on the map!
I knew Southpark had it right when representing Canadians!
Owned by an American company Nickelodeon so your comment is pointless.
Straight from Ottawa, Canada! The show was already big in Canada before it was shown in the U.S. Americans using America as the base again whether it "made it" or not.
