Indonesia’s current capital Jakarta is home to about 10 million people and has become prone to overcrowding, pollution and chronic flooding, prompting efforts to build an entirely new capital from the ground up called Nusantara. Outgoing Indonesian President Joko Widodo came up with the idea in 2019, and proposed its construction on the sparsely populated East Kalimantan province. Nusantara’s first residents are expected to move in by the end of 2024, but will the city be ready in time?

The main issue of land subsiding is 10 million people of Jakarta getting the fresh water from the ground. Water pipe line is not yet covering whole Jakarta, only around 20 % with not adequate water as well. Land subsiding is only rapidly happening in the north Jakarta near the coast line (sea).
The solution is to build robust pipe water system that cover whole Jakarta. The target is to get there in 2030. For that project of course we need water source and we can easily get it from neighboring province like West Java and Banten. New dam has been built in Banten which name is Karian Dam and it is the third largest in Indonesia (We have 300 dams at the moment with plan to build another 300 new dams)
Project to build water treatment facility has been started two years ago with target completion in 2024. While project to build the pipe water system is started recently with backing from more than 15 banks. If you see some areas in Jakarta business district you can see the work that has been going on and it is the second project that intended to replace the old pipe with the new one

Jakarta is indeed facing many problems, and building a new capital city is not entirely wrong, but what needs to be known is that the construction of this new capital city also brings many problems, as shown in the video, many local people are forced to move even without appropriate compensation. In addition, the budget used is also very large. Without clarity on when foreign investment will enter, it is not impossible that the state budget will be forced to be used to cover the cost of expenses, which will ultimately cause a deficit in state finances, the impact of which of course will return to the Indonesian people.
32 billion USD is also a very large fund, when compared to just building one city, why not use the funds to develop cities in Indonesia, the benefits will clearly be enjoyed by the Indonesian people, compared to the new capital city which will only be inhabited by officials and civil servants.

The plan to move the capital from Jakarta has been around for a long time, namely from the era of President Soekarno, President Soeharto, President SBY and was only built by President Jokowi. why President Jokowi? because President Jokowi knows that Indonesia will soon be golden in 2045. If this is not built, how long will this golden Indonesia be realized! Even though there have been a lot of mockery during its development, this is for the sake of the equitable development of Indonesia, which is not only Java-centric, but Indonesia-centric! People on the island of Java think that the new capital is just a waste of money, they don't know that people on all the islands want their regions to develop like Java. The concept of the IKN capital is a forest city, green city, smart city, building that unites with nature. The land used for the capital in Borneo is not native forest, but paper production forest!

I will explain a little about the new capital of Indonesia.

Kenapa sih banyak berita tentang IKN. Krn IKN ini digadang² akan menggantikan Singapore dalam hal membawa orang kaya berinvestasi. Pembangunannya masih panjang. Ada 4 tahap. Tahap pertama aja belum selesai. Jadi, makanya banyak yg penasaran dg IKN bisa apa enggak menyaingi Singapore yg cm ⅓ Jakarta luas wilayahnya.

After the Dutch had connected all the cities on Java by rail in the thirties, the next project was to make Bandung the new capital of the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch already knew that Batavia was unsuitable as the capital. Much swamp and flooding and the climate was much too humid compared to Bandung. But the Second World War prevented Bandung from finally becoming the capital.

Nusantara is a prestige project for the Indonesian presidents. Eventually Nusantara will become the city for the political elite. The embassies will also move, but the current embassies in Jakarta will become consulates. Because no matter what, Jakarta will always have the economic attraction and people and (international) companies will continue to come to Jakarta. Jakarta will continue to grow and there will be no millions of (poor) people from Jakarta moving to Nusantara.
Just as New York is more popular than Washington or Amsterdam is more popular than The Hague.

Why the capital city is moved ?
The current capital of Indonesia, is congested and even more worrying, it’s sinking by as much as 25cm a year! About half of the city of more than 30 million people already lies below sea level.
But largely because all the economic activity in the country is centered in Jakarta, the current capital, and long term predictions show that if the capital stays there the economic inequality will just continue to get worse.
Jakarta started out as an economic hub under the Dutch East Indies Company and two centuries after the company left its still one of the most important economic hubs in Asia. There were attempts to move the political power elsewhere in the 20th century, both by the Dutch and by the independence movement, but it settled in Jakarta anyway.
What that means for most of Indonesia’s people is that most of the country’s money settles there which means there’s none for other regions in the country. It is hoped moving the capital will create new economic links in the center of the country.
This isn’t the first time a country tried this. Brazil moved its capital from thriving Rio de Janeiro to centrally located Brasilia in the 1960s for the same reason. In fact, most U.S. states rejected their largest city as the capital for much the same reason. That’s why they have Albany, Lansing, Harrisburg, Springfield and Sacramento being the capitals of states with much larger population centers. All of those cities are centrally located within their state. Indianapolis was made the capital of Indiana precisely because it was in the center of the state.
So there are several reasons behind this decision:
    1. Overpopulation and Congestion
    2. Environmental Concerns
    3. Economic Development and Regional Balance
    4. Administrative Efficiency
The decision to move the capital is part of Indonesia's vision for sustainable development and aims to address various challenges faced by the current capital, Jakarta.
This is long term projects and result will be reach in next 15 - 20 years.
That's why their neighboor "tiny dot island" country - as accomplices or agent of western side, and some of western countries, including their media are really afraid of this project because they've already understand very well that Indonesia will become a major economic power in Southeast Asia, and it will have a big impacts on the economic of "tiny dot island" country, and western interests also in Indonesia. And they are always reporting of this great country and developing of their new capital city in a different perspectives - sceptical & negative news, compared to other asean countries who always support the new capital city of this great great country and the economic growth of Indonesia and Asean.
You should be proud Indonesian !
